Low fluid is a good starting point. Most garages/petrol stations should have a litre of ATF on the shelf- got to be worth a shot?

Help please!

Sterling has seemingly developed a fault on the way home this evening. It's an auto and it sometimes seemed reluctant to move in 2nd. It did this about 4 times, acting like it's lost drive. It seems to catch it if I move the shifter in 3rd or 2nd. Accompanying that is a whining noise sounding like it's coming from the rear.

Tomorrow morning will be interesting as I've got work at 6am.

Any ideas what might be causing this? It's a KV6 Sterling with a JATCO autobox. I'm thinking low levels as all the other gears seem to work fine.

A quick bit of google fu and the usual suspects on these boxes are fluid level and solenoid fails.

Given that the box went from fine to bad very quickly, then a solenoid fail is more likely.

They can be replaced with the box still in the car.

If it was 3rd and 4th that failed then a cracked reverse piston is the most likely suspect.

Try contacting http://www.sussexautos.co.uk/jatco.phpand they will probably know what you need.

Now decided I actually want this french shed and the seller has stopped responding to emails. Typical (but probably good for the bank balance in the long term)

Code reader - it say P0420 - Catalyst system efficiency below threshold. Which sounds like my cat is on it's way out, but I've never had any emissions issues with it, so I'll give it an Italian tune up on the way home, and treat it to a couple of tanks of super which I do periodically to help it.

Code erased.....

21st wedding anniversary today. Wife got me a breadmaker and a radio controlled helicopter.... she knows me to well.

I've already scared the dog and burnt myself, but the kitchen smells amazing.

Had the XM's offside front caliper apart today.

Findings: sliders seem ok, even though boots are torn. Slapped grease about to try and protect things until I can sort this out properly. Outer pad and disc face are pretty badly worn. The pin that holds the lower part of the caliper in place was a sod to get out. The pads themselves were pretty rusty where they should slide. Can't get the handbrake to work that side now.

Conclusion: Any or all of pretty much everything above could be to blame for the uneven wear. The handbrake is a bit of a sod, but could be cables. Or I could need a new caliper. Ugh.

Decision: Bunged it all back together again while I decide what to do. Footbrake still works well, and the handbrake will just about hold it on a slope when the brakes are warm. In other words, still as shit as it was at Shitefest so I'm trying not to park uphill of any Peugeots.

Spent the day looking for cause of petrol smell on the rover 75 2.0 v6. Noticed a crack in the breather pipe . Thought a bit of tape will fix * that. Took cover of and tried to tape it up and the thing just broke to bits. Whilst getting old one out the bit that goes into the cam cover duly shattered and bits went inside. Then noticed the rest of it was held together with bits of brake pipe and silicone. Then noticed the petrol leak. Leaking from the feed pipe into the injector housing . Again seems to have been repaired* using silicone and a wedge. So need to order breather pipes, cam cover gasket , need to take it off and fish out bits of plastic that may cause armageddon and some o rings to fix the fuel pipe. I think the previous meticulous owner paid his garage bills to the chimps off the tv advert cos the inlet manifold and thermostat where changed four months ago, reciept to prove. Must be one of them garages with one big hammer and one little one. Bye the way I gathered all the technical info off the mg forum and speaking to a really helpfull Scottish bloke.

The money from the sale of the Granada has already been spent, as I'll be collecting more Ford tat after work tomorrow. Here's a pre-collection pez shot from the ad, saves me taking one!

I was surprised to win the auction actually as being a useful estate I thought it'd go for more. A Ghia X no less, and fulfils the WBoD criteria perfectly. I just hope there's nothing massively wrong with it as I should be saving towards the Daimler fund rather than buying more chod, but never mind. And despite being two months shy of the 20 year thing, Peter James were happy to add it to my policy for 47 quid which is a result.

I did a thermostat on one of these last year and it started leaking on the injector seals about 2 days later. I have still got some injector seals in the drawer. They do suffer with age so might not of been the garage's fault. I have now learnt that if you take the fuel rail off then new seals are a must. Those breather hoses are also getting very fragile with age but all of it was still available last year all be it not very cheap.

Changed all four speakers, window regulator, door trims and lock pins, fitted passenger wing mirror trim peice, parcel shelf and spent an age trying to get the passengers electric window working without success on the ZX. Goes down but not up.Can make it work by bypassing the wiring but can't find a fault yet. Tried 3 switches so it's not that.

Bosch and cam belt next.

He he, I had been looking at similar too. Well played. They're pretty potless on paper. Be interesting to see how capable at low speeds they are.

What the fuck am I doing waiting on a 0650 train - and not collecting any chod?

Check the wiring harness from the pillar to the door for a broken wire as that is a common fault on 306's

Need to get some better pictures tonight but here's the 360 saloon I got the other day.

I found it slow but enjoyable, with actual off road ability. See the video.

From the (great) review/blog, it seems far more capable than I had imagined. Given the engine size and the "brief" for what the car needed to be, I think they did well.

I'd have one.

Are they £400 yet?

Edit* the Minis were 650cc !? Blimey.

Can you get these for normal money north of the border? People down here charge like wounded fucking rhinos for knackered ones.

I swapped a Polo GT for it but the guy wanted £450 cash.

It's got MOT till May and the Polo didn't have any so I'm happy all round.

In other news, I'm after selling the ZX estate; if there's anyone who can fizz up a holed sill, adjust the handbrake and fit new discs, it'd probably do another test and make a very cheap hack for someone - or a very good engine donor

160k, Lucas pump XU9TD, short MoT (end of the month), £100. It'll be on standard black steels - I'd like to keep the Picasso wide steels for KNOB_VAN. I've also taken the boom sub and amp out. It's near Peebo if you want it.

I was surprised. I thought it was just a cute little city car. Sadly, they're not £400 yet, but I have seen them under a grand. The Minis must be horrifically slow!

The Minis were proper Kei cars - we got larger engines because the JDM models simply wouldn't have sold here - they'd have been taxed the same as any other car and would have been dangerously slow.

We never got the Junior here. Oddly, it was still JDM even with its non-Kei engine (and dimensions - bit longer and wider, same wheelbase). My video is worth watching just to find out what a Flying Pug is. The success of the Junior caused Mitsubishi to launch the Pinin as a non-JDM model.

Decided the 406 is going into service full-time now. I like it.

Think the E320 will just go, though still dithering. SORNing it though.

Feeling incredibly alive since Halloween.
