Not even. They were XR spec. 70bhp...

All the UK Rallyes I've seen were stickered up XSs with XS engines. Five bhp difference.

I'm getting a form of debate about this now on eBay. A lad asked if the engine in my 106 is a JP3 engine, I said I believed it to be the TU 'suitcase' engine as fitted to the BX amongst others.

He's now saying something about the XN and XSi, but in truth I just don't care.

It's £250. It has an engine. What more does he need.

The TU isn't the suitcase is it?

Correct. 'Suitcase' was the X series Douvrin that the TU directly replaced.

Lordy, what a muck trumpet. Reminds me of the time I worked at a well known electronics retailer and we had AV geeks ringing up wanting to check the serial numbers of 32" Samsung TVs 'because the screens within a certain number range have superior panels'. They were going into stores with sheets of paper and asking them to unbox TVs so they could check them out.

Also, it's £250. You don't get to be a picky sod at £250, sorry. The fact the car has tax, test and tyres is doing extremely well for the money. People in the UK don't realise how cheaply we can pick up second-hand cars in comparison to other European nations and the USA.

Lacquer Peel seems to think service history is a given on a car at this price point. I think he's on another planet. Does the car work? Is it £250? Right, where's the cash point?

Lord knows. He's 'having a think about it' apparently.

£250 for a road legal car would be an absolute gift over here. I'd buy it off you in a flash even though I don't need it, just on the strength of the pocket money price alone. That said, insurance isn't compulsory over here and you can't lob in claims for whiplash, etc. so policies are much cheaper and it's overall just an easier system. I bet that 106 will fly, with it being a 1.4. All things are relative but such a large engine would've been a pipe dream when I passed my test at 17 in '98.

Don't you ever tire of dealing with the great unwashed for not much profit margin, Billy?

Posted

Sometimes, bordering on the often! I still don't like binning useable cars but you can't save them all. I (mistakenly) thought a buy it now would detract from the usual crowd. To be fair I reckon the immediate payment bit has put loads of knobheads off though.

Lord knows. He's 'having a think about it' apparently.

I wouldn't speak to him again even if he called \ messaged back.

Although this will sound suspiciously like 'Autoshite Stock Reply #89' (between 'Aren't I clever I've saved £10 by getting my discs and pads from a scrapyard' and 'I can't possibly like a popular car because it will dent my inverted snob standing') I'd send a car like that straight over the bridge. Life is too short to deal with people like engine code boy for so little return.

Posted

Oh aye, I'm not getting back to him. He asked me a question then basically answered it himself, seemed a bit odd.

Anyhow, maybe he's just hoping I'll mail him back and suggest a lower price or something, that's something that won't be happening.

That's a bugger M,  hope they sort something out for you soon.

Whys the 106 buyer automatically an idiot for asking questions about a car?  It could be the case that certain models of 106 are significantly cheaper to insure or suitable for a one make race series or whatever.  Surely it's better that he asks first than wastes Billy's afternoon by turning up to view and then turning it down over something that could be established beforehand?

I realise that he might not know what he's talking about but certain posters just seem to be moaning that he's asking questions at all.

Indeed, a lovely lady phoned me up about the Mav today.

I bored her silly for about 10 mins I have no doubt, but she seemed interested and I would rather be honest and not waste her time than lead her a merry dance. Had another one email me through eBay, seems interested but "has to sell her car first".

Right - but it's a £250 car. Who gives a flying toss about what engine code it has? Insurers base premiums off capacity and voodoo logic.

The sort of questions purist engine code boy's asking would be appropriate on a 106 Rallye S1 at £2500. I'd want the engine to be the right one and for everything to match. A £250 shitter? I'd be happy if there was air in the tyres and the door didn't drop off at the end of the road. What's a season train ticket these days?

People's elevated tendencies irritate me when cars are this cheap. Sensible questions - are the tyres good, does it pull up straight, do the gears and clutch engage properly, are there any knocks and bangs from the suspension (because, after all, you aren't buying a £250 car for it to be pristine, it's a serviceable knockabout) - I'd listen to. Gibbering bollocks about engine codes would get your message deleted.

Spend some actual money and I might listen to a buyer's pedantic drivel if it's a car that warrants it.

'I am interested but I have to sell my car first' actually means 'I'm hoping you'll ask me what car it is and let me part exchange or swap it'

Then what happens is when you ask them what car is and they'll gush on about it and value it at three times what's its value because 'I know what they're worth.'

Now, in a couldn't make this up if you tried manor, the 106 engine expert has now told me that he can collect Saturday and 'pay cash with a little discount' if I take it off eBay.

'Dear Expert,

It's £250 cash, no discounts.'

Dear Expert,

It's £250 cash, no discounts.

Furthermore, it will remain listed,  until either someone hands over the £250 cash,

or the listing ends automatically, whichever comes first.

Sincerely,

Scrapyard Scales.

Oh, I forgot:

This is ultimatly why I didnt kick off a massive fuss over the wheel falling off the ZX, it was a £350 car with MOT until Jan and a fucking good service history, it took alot of arguing with Amy to get that point across! She wanted me to get a massive refund or return the car, I was happy with £30 from the seller (who could have told me to fro but was a decent bloke I think) to fix the damage and get it going again!

Cant you troll him and give a different engine code and see if he actually knows what he's on about? XF567G for example?

Posted

It could be that engine code boy is buying it for spares and needs an engine. It might be cheaper to buy the whole car rob the engine and weigh it in. I have just done this with a beringo van. £150 for a secondhand engine or £200 for a scruffy old van that drove home the 70 odd miles before being relieved of it's engine. That is the only reason I can think of other than him being a knob.

Possible. But he's still a [k]nob.

NOT a hope in hell.

For the same reasons people on Swapz get sardonic comments when my advert which states "Will swap for MOT'ed & running Jap Motorbike" offer me shagged out 180,000 mile Ford focus estates or 200,000 mile BMW's. They get told that their item is neither Japanese nor is it a Motorcyle and that they need to search Google images to discover what constitutes a japanese Motorcycle if they are in any doubt as t what they actually have.

OMG NOT VW PINEAPPLE VANS SPLITSCREEN SWALLOWTAIL RATLOOK

The roofrack will actually serve a practical purpose, when I go round Wales in a few weeks time I plan to put the spare wheel on the roof to make more room in the boot for camping gear, tools and stuff. It's actually a 70's rather than a 50's rack, and started out life on my grandad's MK2 Escort estate in 1977. Despite this, I think it really suits the scruffy 'old boy workhorse' look of the car, so will probably be a permanent addition.

Don't worry, I won't be filling it full of pointless shit to try and look cool.

the pineapple needs spare wheel x2 jerry can & set of sand ladders to look proper expedition like

I can categorically state without a single doubt, that whatever happens, the 106 expert won't be buying the car. I'll smash it up with an axe and have it filmed for Youtube before I sell it to him.

The Insight hasn't got a starter motor! It uses the electric motor to start the car - instant restarts and no churning! Smug grin on face (wait for it to go wrong.... then see the grin upside down!).

iirc there is a starter motor on the ima stuff but only for "just in case" flat hybrid battery

For anyone remotely interested Ive just worked out my second year end Solar PV generation income and savings:

Generation Income (FIT) £460

Savings over 2013 on gas use £90 (due to Immersun using surplus PV to heat water in DHW tank)

Savings on year on electricity £110

At this rate, Ill have broken even in another 4 years from my initial investment. The biggest boon is using the PV to heat the water for the house. And no i didnt have it installed to earn ££££, but to reduce my electricity bills - which over year 0 it has done by about a third. Its pretty crap over winter, but then this is the North of England so what do you expect?

No car content to this post, but have a steam train I papped this morning

The Moog has collected a welder from Birmingham, we will be expecting tales of learner steel stitching in the near future.

Thanks to Catsinwelder and Sloth, I do indeed have a new toy :)

Plan is to get the triumph up on ramps so I can have a good look underneath to make a plan. Also need to find a relevant course to learn how to use the magic sparking stick

You are quite correct, I read the handbook and it says so.

Got it today and I really like it! Speedwell Honda were a pleasure to deal with, made me up my private plates for when it's ready free of charge, filled it with fuel and gave me a big bunch of flowers! It's not fast by any stretch of the imagination but it's sort of fun seeing how far you can get everything to go green and how high the mpg can go (150) before it tops out. Paddle shift is just a gimmick, totally pointless, stick it in 'D' and let it do its own thing.

Took it and the mutts up onto the Moors, went for a lovely walk and the dogs really like it compared to the Mazda - one either side with their heads hanging out of the windows. My new car now has slobber marks all down both sides!

Got home and my waterproof seat cover has arrived to protect the rear seat and cobbled up a net thing/effort that goes between the front seats to stop the buggers from getting in the front. The back WILL be a disaster area within two days, but I am determined to keep the front of the car suitable for polite company!

Now, find somewhere to live with parking and start collecting shite again. I fancy a cheap Smart car!

I am interested, what was the initial outlay? When you say you saved 110 on leccy, are you saying you spent 110 less over the year after you fit "credit"?

I assume you got in before the payback rates changed? Our neighbours got in just in time, but the sums were looking a lot less appealing by the time we cottoned on.
