Furry muff. I'm not a fan of slot mags, they're ok on a '70's Gran Torino and the occasional Scimitar GTE, but that's about it.

Minilites, on the other hand, I think look great on pretty much anything. Even GT6s.

OOOOOOh - look at those cardboard heater tubes. You can almost smell the impending fire.

Take it you're OK for spares Ian? Got a pretty much perfect fan kicking round the garage still.

I'm planning to get a set of minilites for my blue A35 once it's back on the road, and I can afford them of course. However, I really don't like them on Minis.

The only wheels I really can't stand are steels painted red with whitewall tyres, which I think look shit.

On the subject of wheels, I've just bought a rather nice set of replacement alloys with legal tyres for TV2 from the eBay, in order to replace its corroded original wheels and marginal tyres:

Should go a long way to make the car look and feel better and will hopefully spur me on to sort out its other issues, most of which I have decided can be solved cheaply and easily with good used parts sourced from Volvo breakers and the aforementioned online auction site 8)

So steels painted silver and wearing whitewalls should be ok then?

Fitted a set of new disks and pads to the Wife's Astra estate- YAY!

Tried to fit a new back box, attempted to bodge on a box from a hatchback, didn't work. Astra now has half an exhaust. BOO!!

It was a bit silly for Citroen to not have any method of fastening the tubes, so they could fall onto the hot exhaust. However, it's nowt that a few cable ties or some garden twine can't remedy. Not had one catch fire yet! (well, not from a fallen tube anyway...)

Actually, I've only one spare fan, which I now need to fit. If you've got a spare, that'd be very handy! Coming to Shitefest?

Now I didn't say that they never catch fire... On one of mine, the rubber engine cowling caught fire (!), right next to the fuel pump. To this day, I've no idea how that happened. Thankfully it smouldered and the fire brigade were able to put it out. On another one, I thought it had caught fire but I think it was just a seized alternator with the belt rubbing on it...

Yes not a standard 2CV as it was fitted with a Garret Turbo off a Renault 5, so who knows how badly fitted items were under that bonnet. Not sure that counts if you are using that as evidence of cardboard heater tube failure causing a fire in its intended application.

Anyway - to counter Ian's point re tied up heater tubes - Citroen did fit a bracket with rubber ties to support the tube on the left hand side and rubber ties were fitted from new to tie the other side to the main starter feed cable. These were probably broken or removed during servicing by lazy dealers or mechanics though. Its not unusual for things like this to get thrown in the bin. A Citroen Specialist binned the undertray on my Dad's Xant, just because it was a pain in the arse. My Dad was most upset and demanded it be replaced however it was long gone so he complained enough and got the cost of a new undertray taken off the cost of the service.

Anyway having reenforced cardboard tubes near souces of heat is nothing new, VW I recall used 3 such tubes in the engine bay of the Beetle for 60 years and nobody moaned about them yet Air cooled VW seem even more prone to bursting into fire..... maybe this is due to the owners just having got fed up with them I'm not sure.

I hope you've just bought that Dave!

So when do you start the job as a chain smoking landlord of a flat roofed council estate boozer?

Excellent... that's just ace.

But seriously, cheers guys.

I had a moment yesterday afternoon where I was questioning whether Ive done the right thing, but I can't possibly loose out as its cheapcheap. Its just the MOT that could be a sticky issue, but I have faith.

I just wish i could afford to bring it to Shitefest, but it'd be a £200 round trip and that actually makes me cringe...

Wow! I'm not usually a yank tank fan, but that's the absolute bizz. Is it a shitter or quite nice?

Posted

From what Ive seen, Tim, its a rough diamond. Needs an MOT, and a good weekends worth of cleaning to get it not far off pretty damn tidy.

The Cavalier is back on its wheels following corrective surgery to the left sill.

I think there's probably a shelf life to them. When I bought the my last 2CV it was almost 20 years old, and a previous owner had put some kind of harness round the one over the exhaust. The foam on the inside was degrading, which was leading to dusty crap being blown into the interior, so I replaced them with a set from ECAS. From memory the ECAS versions weren't cardboard, and were so strong there was no way they were going to come off.

I'd love to, but already committed for this weekend for dad stuff. Happy to sort out via Shiteley if that's possible, or otherwise when it suits best.

If you get fed up of it, and the price is right, it could find a very happy home in Barrow come the winter... Is it slant-6 or V8?

Its a smogtastic 318 Eddy, and we'll see how I get along with it over the coming months. Ive got 1000miles to do in the last 2weeks of August. That should be nicely expensive....

Feel the seat, you won't notice the fuel gauge ... 318 is good, it was a long-running motor used in many different cars so most of the bumps should have been ironed out by the time this was built. You see these in many 80s movies, they're a tough old boot favoured by many police departments. Best of luck with it.

I love the M-body Chryslers, especially the police package Plymouth Gran Fury and Dodge Diplomat 8)
