richardthestag Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I am occasionally convinced that folk are taking a swing at me often by totally innocent comments. I then micro fucking analyse the whole situation and my mind takes a huge downward spiral and I end up wanting to hide. motivation takes a nose dive. counselling has helped me spot triggers and wipe them out before they start niggling at me in a nutshell ignore the idiot on the mustang forum, or lie and tell him what he wants to hear, fucking knuckledragger will probably just go away You are doing a good job here, the dream is being lived eddyramrod, Joloke and danthecapriman 3
JeeExEll Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 If just a bit flatter through age and not obviously broken then they'll be fine.IIRC there's a check on front & rear bushes but no point in worrying about a problm which may not be there. At one time it was quite a common mod on tuned V6 Capris to have deliberately flattened (single leaf) springs - i.e. owners would pay to have it done. Good to see you're organised with your list, don't let that Mustang Club twonk's comments upset you. I like the classic 65 to 73 Mustangs like everyone else but sometimes it can be a bit overload and (dare I say it) it can get to the stage where they all merge to look the SAME. Joloke and eddyramrod 2
richardthestag Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 so long as handling is unlikely to be affected should be no issue. There are companies who will disassemble and retemper OE springs for you rather than new reproductions stuff. Land rover series repro springs are rubbish Joloke 1
bezzabsa Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 Single make car forums are usually full of self opinionated rivet counters....and also folk who don't actually Use their cars..just few select car meets a year , then 11 months and 3 weeks of polishing.. stuff em all.....if you enjoy a car , then stuff em...the few niggles are nothing - after all you're getting your 'dream' vehicle..also being #patina'd# you wont be afraid of parking it anywhere, whereas the polish mad fetish merchants probably park miles from anything paranoid of a fly farting on it!!! PS didn't yanks have lap belts??? if so grab a set from a discovery Mk1 jump seats in the rear, then jobs a good un!! rainagain, Joloke, JeeExEll and 3 others 6
Supernaut Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I sympathise with you Joloke. I have a shite E36 BMW. Whenever I mention to other BMW 'enthusiasts' that it's a 320i automatic, I get snide comments like "My condolences" etc.Yeah yeah, not everybody can afford the only surviving 2.8 manuals that haven't been crashed into a wall backwards in Fife. Fuck 'em, I like it, and I love the shitestang! richardthestag, Joloke and Uncle Jimmy 3
PhilA Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 Wiper stalk should come apart, that will be a very simple switch inside. Horn might just need a sharp wallop while someone is holding the button down, if that liberates any kind of noise then most have an adjustment nut or screw that can be tweaked so the points work properly and it makes a loud tone. Mine didn't with when I got it, and after hitting it to free it up it made a plaintive mooing noise until it was adjusted to a nice loud beep. On the dash the only lights that have to work for MoT are the high beam telltale and indicator telltale. So long as the springs aren't broken, a little saggy is fine. Down the road you can always get them re-set to new again. Keep the original steel if possible and get them properly heat treated. Decent engineering workshops can do this. I think all yours needs is for the rubber bushes to be ok and a quick bounce test on both sides to make sure it doesn't keep bouncing up and down (knackered dampers). I think it's something like it needs to not bounce more than 1.5 times after it's released (push down, bounce up, bounce down, stop- not counting the little wobbles of the tires). Sidelights will be fine on something around 14 gauge (about half the diameter of a single wire in regular 13A household flex). That's more than the lights will need but probably about the minimum gauge wiring used in the car by Ford. Best of luck, it's just lots of little things that can all each be worked through systematically in little bites. Phil eddyramrod and Joloke 2
panhard65 Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 As others have said that is a fairly minor list of faults. It is always better to buy an honest car rather than a shiney one. I wouldn't trust anything that had been restored in America without a full photographic file as they do love expanding foam and filler. I probably wouldn't mention the belts to the tester as they are something that gets overlooked quite often. Once you get the reg then the real work starts to get it how you want it rather than how some twat in the owners club thinks it should be. A project car will always end up being more expensive than just buying one someone else has done but at least you will know the car has been done to a standard you are happy with and you will learn a lot about it on the way. danthecapriman Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 PS didn't yanks have lap belts??? if so grab a set from a discovery Mk1 jump seats in the rear, then jobs a good un!!Some did some didn’t.On mine it’s fitted with a 3 point seatbelt. But the top belt mount is into the cars roof just behind the front seats. But they also separate so you can only use the lap belt if you want to.The top (roof) mount section hangs down with the top half of the belt permanently attached. The lap belt section pulls across your lap and clicks into the buckle, then you pull the top section across your shoulder and clip it to the lap belt!Bizarre way of doing it and they’re utter shit! So shit in fact I never use the top sections. I only ever use the lap belt. Possibly illegal (73 car so over here has to have a 3 point?) but I don’t care it’s my car and up to me if I don’t use the belt properly! Technically I can’t get pulled over and shafted for not wearing a seatbelt because I am using it, albeit only part of it! Anyway, that’s not a bad list Jo. Most of it’s just electrical gremlins or altering wiring. Not too bad at all. eddyramrod, Cavcraft and Joloke 3
Cavcraft Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 (off topic) Dan, have messaged you on here. Cheers. Joloke, danthecapriman and eddyramrod 3
Bren Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 I would not be fretting over this car. When it got it's first owner Concorde was just entering service, Jimmy Carter was US president and many of us were eating jubblys while watching Space 1999. It's an old car with a few issues. None of which are impossible to sort. eddyramrod, Uncle Jimmy and Joloke 3
PhilA Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 30 ohms is terrible! That'll make for a very short lived switch with very dim lights. Keep that one, it might come apart and clean up. Useful as a spare, seeing all the current for the headlights goes through it, and it's in a potentially moist location. Phil Joloke 1
PhilA Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 It may be stuck. Does it flip from one contact to the other when you press it on the bench, connected to multimeter? It may have jammed. And because California, it's wholly possible they were just driving it round with the lights stuck on one position... Phil Joloke 1
danthecapriman Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Great work Jo! The boot floors actually come up pretty well. Looking at the first pic of it I expected you to have found rust holes tbh! Fortunately not though. eddyramrod and Joloke 2
DodgeRover Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 You could fit a relay headlight loom which would take all the load off the switch and should give you brighter lights. They are 100% simple and cost about £12 off ebay I think last time I had one. Good progress to report! Joloke 1
PhilA Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Yes it is switching but the continuity trst buzzer sounds like a drowning cat and average resistance is 30 ohms.I have a feeling itll be an easy fix with a new switch Think the female socket needs a clean too but havnt figure out how to? is there a knack? all I can think of is scrape the inside of the contacts with a small pocket screwdriver.......... Yes, should work with a new one by the sounds of it. I'd be wary of sticking screwdrivers and stuff into those, every time I've done that it's resulted in the connectors being pushed apart and not making good contact. Personally I'd say chemical clean then rely on the action of being slid against new connectors. I've peddled it on here before but go get a bottle of DeOxit D100. Little bottle, kinda spendy but goes a long way and works very well. Put it on every connector you can find! Phil Joloke 1
320touring Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Good continued effort on this - it feels a bit like the car is testing you to see if you're "the real deal" Done a braw job so far and seem to be working through stuff methodically eddyramrod and Joloke 2
Uncle Jimmy Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Any photo involving me usually has wood in it, more often than not stained with decades of oil/paint/varnish...Look forward to seeing the SS in reality soon. As for one make car clubs, avoid, or at least take with a wheelbarrow full of salt, always a high level of arseholes. That spare wheel well looks a lot better than expected, mega wire wheel, some spray filler and a repaint it'll look bonzer, is there a rubber bung to go in it? eddyramrod and Joloke 2
Uncle Jimmy Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Looking at the side profile of the SS there's a fair dollop of Leyland P76 about it....which came first?

danthecapriman Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Great stuff Jo. Get your moneys worth out the pickling vinegar!Your washer jets are very similar to the ones on my Capri, yours are longer though. I’ve got part of the original battery tie down clamp off my Mercury, I’ll grab a pic of it tomorrow for you. If it’s any good to you it’s yours if you want it?I’ve got a whole new battery tray with completely different style tie down clamp now so it’s no use to me anymore. eddyramrod and Joloke 2
danthecapriman Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Looks fairly similar to the tie down I’ve got of the Merc. I’ll have a look at it tomorrow for you. For fuel caps, have a look around the filler cap area for a fuel tank vent opening. Might just be a small hole somewhere. Underneath it’ll have a tube or hose running out of the tank, separate to the fuel filler tube and usually quite a bit smaller, if it’s a separate vent. If it is like that you need the standard fuel cap.If there’s no separate vent opening or pipe work coming from the tank then you’ll need the self venting type cap. eddyramrod and Joloke 2
danthecapriman Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Btw, on mine the filler tube had rusted badly. Looking down it in the sunlight it looked like a colliderscope with all the rays of light coming through the holes! It turned out the Ford filler tubes were almost exactly the same diameter and cap fitting end as those fitted to MG Midgets of all things. If yours is the same as mine (being Ford I’d expect it is) then you might get a fitting cap for an MG cheaper than importing a Mustang one. Joloke and eddyramrod 2
vulgalour Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 This is all excellent progress and the solidness of that wheel well a happy little bonus! Sounds like you've got this all nicely in hand now and none of the issues appear insurmountable. You need some centre caps on those rostyles that say SHITESTANG in the same way as a stick of rock. I bet someone good at stickers could make you a set to go on generic centre caps. drum, Joloke and eddyramrod 3
320touring Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 American v8s = burnouts n powerslides! Grip is the enemy;) Christine, eddyramrod and Joloke 3
vulgalour Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 Caps are a generic push-fit so, measure the internal diameter and see what's out there that fits. You can bet something matches that's cheap. Alternatively, measure plastic bottle caps for an external push fit, I can bet there's something out there you can just push straight on and once painted silver or satin black, nobody would be any the wiser. It's amazing what you can get away with really for this sort of thing, you needing go splurging megabucks on the proper bit of kit, just something smart and generic will be fine. Try filling the washer bottle with hot (not boiling) water a few times, it might soften the plastic and the weight of the water might be enough to gently persuade it back to the original shape. Joloke 1
danthecapriman Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 Here’s the battery tie down clamp. It does fit at an angle slightly same as yours. One of the threaded bits isn’t the best though! The clamp itself and other threaded rod are perfectly fine though.I couldn’t use it again as my tray had been shredded and rusted away where the hooks go so it’s yours if you want it?Shitty paint can not included!! DodgeRover Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 Didn't you buy a set of slot mags from on here for this already? Joloke 1
bezzabsa Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 try poundshop for stainless camping cups...i'm sure they did a pack that was an almost straight fit for wheel centres (minus the handles of course)... also had a nice lip so they slotted in from the rear editsummat like thishttps://www.ebay.co.uk/i/352300473665?chn=ps&adgroupid=13585920426&rlsatarget=aud-133395220866%3Apla-142405562466&abcId=&adtype=pla&merchantid=6995734&poi=&googleloc=1006564&device=c&campaignid=207297426&crdt=0 vulgalour, Dan_ZTT, Joloke and 2 others 5
