How the fuck does a mixture screw get like that? It's a worry that someone's been cocking around with it, prolly safe to assume it's only been running silly rich like that, might be worth checking the little orifice the pointy end is meant to enter is ok. Do also check your ignition carefully, like the coil terminals are nice and tight, the plugs are good, even nice clean looking NGK ones can play up these days, usually when fixing a carb someone's buggered up there'll be an ignition issue that prompted the tampering.

I think it's a 'feature' that lets the those screws get like that.

When I had one of this horrid things the entire pointy bit was missing off the mixture screw, I replaced it & it made absolutely no change to how to how it ran.

The plugs and leads are new. The coil is part of the renix unit on this as it's a later model. The car only hunts at idle and I've sorted it for it to act up again. I've replaced hoses and t pieces. Can't be much left now!

The technical term for that screw is 'fucked'; quite possibly whatever orifice it screws into will be fucked also, rendering any attempt at fine tuning the amount of pez allowed into the intake futile.

Posted

I'm hoping it's not fucked the hole on the carb. It more to do with not seating it right. If the carb is fucked then I'm in trouble.

Posted

Those carbs are a dime a dozen, so much so that I'd never spend more than ten minutes on one before I chuck it and whack on another.

Nothing short of buying a refurbed one I may end up in same position though. This is a later version with the idle solenoid and fuel cut off etc on it too

Not happening. Love the variomatic when it's not stalling at lights or idling rough! Been stuck in house past 2 days. Going a bit stare crazy

Time for a Clio 1*2 transplant, obvz.

Have got one if you need it bub, just needs a cambelt and sixteen valves probs. Non of that carb bollox.

I hated my 340. Could never get the bastard running quite right.

We don't need negative vibes! We need to join hands and sing happy songs.

You know what? Fuck it. Medication has worn off. Feeling down about it now.

New parts arrived. New parts fitted. Car still won't idle right with out hunting and mixture screw makes naff all difference.

Posted

He is as baffled as I. Can't work out why the mixture screw is doing sweet FA no air leaks but still hunting.

I battled with shit idling on my Mk2 Granada for months, tweaked the mixture and timing until it’s eyes popped out and at best made negligible difference. New plugs, leads, dizzy cap etc etc

Finally checked the valve clearances and they were all far too small, adjusted them correctly and now it idles like a Rolls Royce Phantom

Apples and oranges I know, but if nothing else is working then they’re worth a look. I don’t know whether these engines have hardened valve seats for unleaded? But if they don’t then it could be valve seat regression. I suspect that’s what it is on mine, despite the previous owner claiming it had been converted.

I have a tapper noise on mine. And 1 does seem slightly louder. Definitely hardened valve seats on mine. It did run ok then became worse through stalling occasionally to stalling at every stop to finally not running at idle unless choke on or tickover right up. Hunting like a bastard too. Give it some throttle and you can still hear the miss higher up the rev range.

Posted

Might not be then, mine never cut out but it hunted badly and was extremely lumpy, it gradually got worse and developed into a low end misfire that lasted until around 2500rpm, like yours, not great with an automatic!

A noisy tappet would indicate the gaps are too large, which are irritating but as far as the engine running is concerned, fairly safe because the valve will definitely be closing. It’s more likely that bad running is caused by gaps that are too small thus not allowing the valve to close properly, compression leaks etc. These would be silent.

Usually for valve clearances to close up there has to be some other force at work - ie running unleaded petrol with non hardened seats. Unmaintained the clearances will usually get larger rather than smaller. They’re probably worth checking still but may not be the silver bullet in your case.

The silver bullet is swan vestas and a gallon of shells finest. Being ill I require the car a lot. Currently feeling trapped.

Hope you get this sorted soon Bub, getting to the bottom of misfires can be a PITA

I hated my 340. Could never get the bastard running quite right.

Stripped the Stromberg carb down on my 360 to eradicate the varnished fuel etc causing shitty running, but the real fix was to pull out the B19 and fit a B230FT from a 940. :)

Issue I think may have been found.

Details man details!

Fuck it. Spent two bastard hours or more making gaskets after finding a leak at the manifold. New gaskets etc now it's still playing up.

Posted

what condition is the vac pipe to the brake servo? just a thought

Posted

If you get really sick of it you could always swap it for a 406 estate with tow bar....

Posted

It's still got an air leak at the manifold joint. Foad tempted yes but I can't use a manual as a daily and the Volvo is a nice car but it's trying to beat me!

Posted

hey Bub, great to have you back, and sorry to hear of the ovlov woes.

we had the same issue on Marvin the Metro, an air leak from around the manifold.

as a bit of a bodge, we used some super glue smeared around the offending part of the manifold to seal the leak.

we did this cos the stud holding the manifold onto the side of the engine have not been touched in nearly 30 years, and there was no chance of unfastening them without one or more studs snapping.

so, to avoid that, and then having to disturb the engines cylinder head to get the broken studs back out, we used the glue.

at a push, i wonder if silicon sealer would do the same trick?

Posted

Funny that you say that as I've just smeared black silicone gasket sealer round it. Fingers crossed
