15/02/18 Renault 30 Project - gone to a safe new home

Pardon me for shoving my nose in, but those sills are crusty as fook.  No point in trying to patch or repair, you'll be there for a thousand years.

However, they do appear to be fairly simple single-curvature sheet, and could be made up from flat sheet quite easily, no need for genuine ones if there is no pressed double-curvatures.

Given the condition of the sills, I would want to get the car up in the air and do a decent corrosion assessment, see what panels are needed, which can be fabricated, and how easy/difficult any of it is.

The front subframe looks similarly past-it's-best, and may well be holed under some of that flaky rust.  Again, it may be possible to un-stitch the welds on it and put a new cut flat sheet on to re-make it without removing from the car.  The good thing about most 70's cars is that they generally had a lot less double-curvature on hidden on structural stuff, so repairing with flat sheet is much more viable than with more modern shite.

Very helpful suggestions there, thank you very much

It's what makes this place unique - anywhere else I turn, i just get called mad, and told to scrap it.

I'm a bit late to this thread. Saw it lurking and assumed it was a continuation of you trying to sell the Pug. Didn't realise things had got more serious.

Hopefully I've just chucked in twenty quid via PayPal. Happy to help though I'm unlikely ever to see it, living in Southampton, but just knowing one more exists will make me happy.

Well hooray, that's £20 back in the previously empty pot!

Datsun cog do the honours would you please?  8)

I'm going to have a go at replacing the front brake discs at the weekend, the big problem is finding the correct rear ones, ONE set available on ebay for extortionate sum!  :-(

Well people,

Mr Datsuncog is working on a fun Renault 30 related competition, and all 16 donors to date will be automatically entered, as will future donors!

More to be revealed a little later on, but there's a cracking little prize on offer, watch this space!

MicroShite Special Bonus Charity* Roffle: "Is that a R30 in your pocket, or are you just delighted to see some serious French rust?"

Massive thank you to everyone who's answered The Call Of The Shite and put a few pennies, or indeed pounds, into the pot to help this glorious embodiment of Autoshite, the legendary ex-Mouseflakes brown R30 V6, avoid the fragger and live to wallow another day. This is a big ask, folks. We know it. The brown barge is in a bad way, but not so far gone as to be beyond help. It's going to be a long haul before doubleyeller rocks up to Shitefest behind the wheel, and the first step is getting her moving (and stopping) safely again, prior to the more serious MOT stuff.

post-17915-0-56371300-1511558025_thumb.jpg

Thanks to your donations we've now raised an absolutely cracking £221, and we now have:

  • shiny new brake lines, made possible by Bigdan30 and Junkman (£50)
  • pair of front brake discs (fabulous donation by a mystery masked benefactor)
  • a set of four new tyres to replace the cut, flat jobbers (£151 inc. delivery)

Which still leaves us with a crisp £20 note to put towards the brake calipers, metalwork including doors and maybe sills, and (possibly) a crate of brown Rustoleum rattle cans...

But! We've still a way to go yet, as twenty quid isn't going to buy all of these things... and while doubleyeller is busy roffling the ex-Spartacus Pug 106 for funds (and I'm praying I don't win it, in the nicest way possible), what about those of us who simply can't justify entering a roffle because they just don't have the damn space to store their wonderful* prize?

Well, worry no more. Here's a shite-shaped roffle prize that anyone can enjoy in the comfort of their own home. It's your very own Renner In My Pocket.

post-17915-0-69452700-1511602323_thumb.jpg

What have we here? A Solido 1/43 scale model of the very machine we're striving to save here, a Renault R30 TS, finished in lovely sparkly blue. The doors open and close, which already puts it ahead of many 1/1 scale Renners. It comes in a lovely clear display box, too.

post-17915-0-73512700-1511602356_thumb.jpg

So how can you get this miniature beauty into your eager, greasy hands?

Well, the best news is that if you've already made a donation to saving VPE500S, of any amount - you're already on the roffle list! Boom! Simply drop a comment below with your preferred number between 1 and 59, or a request for a random number, and I'll allocate a roffle ticket to your username. Job done.

If you're one of the Autoshite heroes who has actually trekked over to Shipley to do a bit of spannering on the beast itself, then you get two tickets. Only fair.

Haven't got round to making a donation yet? Not a problem. Simply waft a few coins of any amount in the direction of Mr. doubleyeller's PayPal account (that's [email protected]) and comment below 'Donation made - [preferred number/random]' and you're in with a shout.

Want to donate again? Blimey, you're keen. Fair enough - well, send another payment, get another number. I'm aware that this leaves us open to all sorts of accusations of people putting in 30x donations of 5p, so we're running on a trust system here, yeah? Doubleyeller will keep me right if owt funny goes on.

Once we've got a full sheet (or near enough), we'll have a Grand Roffle draw, and one of you lucky peoples will be receiving a piece of microShite through the post just a few days later to an address of your choice.

What could be better? Other than lying on a concrete drive in the Yorkshire frost, welding up a forty-year old Renault, obviously. That's the kind of joy that money just can't buy.

Get donating, folks - it's all for a good cause!

Thanks to Mr Datsuncog for the above - it looks like a pain free way of owning a R30 with a better paint job than mine!

Ok, so if the people who have donated already would like to update the list with their choice of Roffle number (donations on paypal don't all show Autoshite usernames, you may not want your real name on public forum). Or you can email myself or Datsuncog, and we'll do the honours

Great googly-moogly. Amazing things have been happening overnight!!

post-17915-0-53612700-1511603240_thumb.jpg

The Renner Fund has now received donations amounting to a whopping £331!!

That's valued by our in-house experts as almost equivalent to seven Laguna IIs!!!

Massive thanks to all donors, great and small. This will go a long way to not only securing VPE's future and keeping it from a one-way trip to China in a million little pieces, but actively seeing it back on the public highway again.

And remember!! All donors to the cause are eligible for entry in the MicroShite Grand Roffle, where somebody from these pages will win a genuinely rust-free R30 TS* as a memento of their generosity in helping save this Autoshite legend. Just comment below with 'donated' and your preferred number/random pick (or PM me, for you publicity-shy millionaire donor types) to be in with a shout.

This place, etc etc.

Well folks, I'll update the prize draw numbers as soon as I get home - too fiddly on a phone!

I've had a brilliant day of exciting acquisitions!

Brake discs, but more excitingly....a NOS genuine Renault tailgate! Brilliant find eh?

Bump! Make any small donation to be in with a chance to win your very own Renault 30 (not life size lol)

Posted

I'm the bloke who chucked in that odd quid that keeps showing up on the totals!

You really don't need to give me a number and a pocket sized car for that.

Please give my number to someone who donated much more.

Although if everyone on here donated a quid, it'd probably* be back on the road by now.

You can have a number all the same. I'll put you a random on. A quid is appreciated, like you say, if everyone donated a quid, the fundraiser would be done!

I was hoping that there would be plenty of NOS rear discs for the Renault 30 cheaply available - not the case! This is the only supplier who actually has them, not cheap at £84.03 a pair! Well, I just ordered a pair of these from the fund - once they arrive and the callipers are cleaned up, that should complete the work to the braking system on the R30!
