Since when did stuff get so expensive??

Things will calm down again once the 'in thing' moves on.

At the moment it's 70's Fords and other similar stuff. But the market is beginning to move on to 80's stuff. Ford XR's, RS's, Pug 205 GTI that sort of stuff.

It all depends on the generation of people that are buying the cars to relive their past. Once the people who drive up mk1 Escort prices are past that period of life where they have spare cash to spunk on a car they wanted their dad to buy as a kid then the cars values will settle out to a more normal realistic level.

Then the cycle moves on to the next generation of the same type of people. The next big thing will be 80's hot hatches...

You can still get things like Cortinas, Capris and Escorts and a multitude of similar things at reasonable prices it's just you need to be more creative about how you get them. Importing a less desirable left hand drive car from somewhere like France where they aren't as sought after might be an idea?

I've even considered (and I still want to!) hiring a car transporter truck and driver and going to somewhere like Greece and filling it with as many of the 70's Fords I want as possible then bringing it all back here. You could sell some at a profit to finance the trip and keep a couple for yourself! I really want a Mk1 Granada 2 door saloon!

My past was Alfasuds, Minis, Mark 4/5 Cortinas, Alfa 75's, a Porsche 928S, V12 Jags, E28 5 Series.

I don't really want any of them again. They were okay back then, but they are much older now, that much more rubbish, and invariably a disappointment. I'd have an Alfa 75 or an E28 BUT only if they were buttons and could be used after minor fettling. It's not gonna happen, and I don't give a shit.

There are other cars I'd like to try. Never had a Morris 1000, really fancy a Riley Pathfinder or a Farina A110, a seventies XJ6.

I'm not so sure I'd agree those cars would be a disappointment now tbh. Something like a Cortina would have generally been a worn old car years ago but the survivors now have, for the most part, had shit loads done to bring them back to best/good or they're unworn un messed with old people's Sunday cars. The crap ones are pretty much all long gone now sadly.

But saying that, it's horses for courses.

In my honest opinion (and not everyone is the same!) a Cortina will wipe the floor with anything since. A 2000's Mondeo is just a dull forgettable front drive blandmobile! The Cortina isn't. They look good, they're built simply and fixing them is easy and I love the old fashioned driving style and feel of old cars. To me just about anything from the 90's onwards is just modern dross and I wouldn't have one given tbh! It's classics only for me!!

Like my Capri, nothing since the last Capri is even half as good as one.

They have to be a little more accurate than a majorly reconstructed rot box though

Most of the new parts for classics are made in China. Nothing wrong with it if they've made them to specification. Chinas industry is more than capable of producing goods from disposable, short life to very high quality, very long life. But it depends on the factory, quality control, purchaser oversight and how much the purchaser is prepared to spend.

Even when they were brand new Cortinas were widely slated for being total rubbish, by the end of production something like 85% were sold into fleet use because no private buyer was that desperate. That's why the press were so surprised the Sierra was any good!

Anyway, a Cortina is gonna be just the same as any other old car in 2017, ie total rubbish of you compare it to any modern vehicle but a fun and distinctive thing to tool about in.

Clarification: I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Cortina and hae no strong feelings about them either way, but I don't think they have ever been thought of as 'good' cars even when brand new.

ps this thread is deffo one of the top ten most pointless on this website, if you can't understand why things that used to be cheap 20 years ago are no longer as cheap as they were, you're a total melt

For me it's how a lot of old stuff has had a massive jump in price in the last 3-5yrs. Way past inflation.

It's changed the nature on what is shite and what is now expensive shite.

The Cortina wasn’t any worse than anything else made at the time.

The escort shells are probably a better bet than something that’s been badly welded up, full of gobbo. My only concern would be the thickness of the panels and how well it’s put together. At least you could fairly easily check this, buying a car that’s had serious bodywork already it’s not easy to spot where it’s had corners cut.

Agreed.

Cortinas were a good car for their cost back in the day. That's why they consistently outsold their competitors. Just the same as a Mondeo is a good car these days.

It's the same as all the self called 'experts' who slate the Marina. The truth is that back when they were new they were decent enough cars and they sold well. It's just that it's popular to slag off the British car industry of the time. We've had a few Marinas in the family, amongst others, and never had a sniff of trouble with any of them.

Like I said above though, everyone has their own opinion. Define 'better'!?

Better for me is the simple construction of an old Capri or Cortina. It's easy to fiddle about with than what cars are now. Better for me is the styling of 70's cars, today's cars don't have styling period!

By rights I should get rid of the Mercury according to this threads logic and get some dull shitty German thing. It'll be more reliable and better on fuel... fuck that though! The Mercury pisses all over any modern turd!

The poorer usability of it is more than made up for by the awesome size and style and that massive V8 is way better to use and listen to than some boring electronic filled modern eco thing.

That isn't everyone's cup of tea of course but it's worked very well for me over the years.
