Did I miss a 'statement of intent'? What's the plan :)

Do you know the Manx number? I have a friend living there who may be able to say who to contact about it.

Posted

Sadly not, but I asked their version of the DVLA who suggested I send the VIN number and they'll check it for me.

Mine was rusted in awkward places - inner sill, next to the dropped rear footwell so you had a narrow, tapering gap to try and cut/weld in.

Mind you it also had two inches of filler covering the large dent/split in the N/S/R quarter, and the complete rear bodywork off a different car.

OK I'm gonna ask - why have the doors got 45 degree corners? Has it had gussets (fnarr) added in the door shuts for strength?

Posted

I assume to stop the doors opening if being raced, but I'm not 109%.

is it normal for the springs on one of these to poke through the top of the strut tops like that?

Yes , usually when they were about 6 months old

Well done you have bought a minter!!!

Sorry I meant Munter DYAC

The strut tops are actually ok, for some bizarre reason someone has put the struts back on without the sort of plate thing needed to bolt to the inner wings! I might even get a pair made up to make it easier to roll the car around.

VIN plate seems to suggest 1966, high compression 1.0, with standard axle and gearbox. Got colour and trim code off it, but can't remember them!

Valuing it fairly tricky, it's been suggested by someone ITK to strip off and sell fibreglass bits and sell the shell to a racer, though I'd rather just get the whole thing gone.

Is that a Ford English axle under there?

Difficult to tell on the photo.

If it is can you measure the length, and is the diff still in it?

Could be worth more than you think.

Possibly axle is from a different vehicle though.

The absolute best thing* to do would be build it as a hot stox or similar oval racer. Sponsorship by CavCraft motors should see a steady stream of shonky old motors making there way to your door.

I actually like it - is there any history of it being raced?

I couldn't get a decent picture of the axle/diff, but will have a try and get measurements, cheers.

Very likely Ford axle, but could be Escort or MK2 Cortina maybe.

If its front loading diff its valuable, £50 to £200, depending on ratio. More if LSD.

But its likely been raced, so without stripping it its just a big gamble.

I may gamble depending on width. But would only want the axle.

Ok, cheers, Mally. Being honest I really want the car to go 'complete' as I haven't really the time, room or inclination to strip it, sorry.

They aren't Anglia top mounts, they're cups off a Capri or something.

Do you mean the inner wing things or the actual struts, sorry? If I can find something (cheap/free) off a modern car to replace the struts so I can bolt them on I will do.

Am thinking its a Cortina axle,  handbrake mechanism is not Escort.

If it goes for scrap I'd take the diff out and stick the half shafts back in, it will still roll.

Then count the number of teeth and hope! Even 3.89 is worth around £80 these days.

Please get this MoT'd and drive it into the concours judging paddock at Cholmondeley FO1000C.

It would make my year.

Presumably it has capri/escort legs fitted, they are just missing the top mount which are like these

If you need measurements taking on the bolt spacings to make sure I don't mind measuring mine if you give me a shout

Thanks, will give you a shout.

Looking again at the way it's been cut up / modified at the front, I'd wager those are Escort struts and it's sort of botched in to fit an Escort rack and roll bar etc. When you modify an Anglia for rack and pinion using an Escort front end, the engine sits quite a way back to clear the rack and the crossmember (and the engine has a rear bowl sump instead of front bowl). That's probably why the firewall is cut out like that.

Can't really tell what the axle is, but Anglia, Cortina and Escort are all pretty much the same bar the width. Looks quite wide so it might be Escort - will depend on the handbrake mechanism and the brakes.
