MGB GT - Mission finally complete! Phew.

This would be okay for a grand:

On the road, being used, a ten footer as well. Break your MGB duck with something MOT'd, probably quite reliable and with which you won't be too precious. I doubt it'll go much more than a bag tbh.

you changed your choon ;)

That one ^^ I would be little bit wary of the tinsey miles it does each year, cars dont like NOT being used especially in the brake dept. It does look original and together though

Grumbles in the gearbox and non functioning overdrive when spent so much money elsewhere doesnt add up

Bet it goes for way more that a bag

Just seems more honest than that orange thing. A grand is all that's worth though - I personally wouldn't give it garage space but I don't want an old MGB! The gearbox noise will be worn layshaft bearings, it'll rumble on for years.

I have just been following this as an interested bystander until now, but on Sunday I had a quick look at this and it looked tempting even at the price:

http://sunningdale-classics.co.uk/vehicle/1971-mgb-gt/

Note it isn't the colour in the main picture, the smaller ones are more lifelike. The doors fitted perfectly and shut with a gentle click, the bodywork  and interior were spotless, with nos signs of filler and tapping the sills gave a reassuring metallic ping but that was all that I had time to check. Only reservations, apart from the price, although it might turn out to be a good buy in the long run, were that the paint finish looked as if it was two-pack and not quite right for a B of that age was it the correct colour for an MG of that age (a very dark blue) and the low mileage bewteen MOTs. Trivial points perhaps, but if you are paying top price then everything has to be just so, even if I want to drive it rather than merely park it in a field with 200 others  ;)

I wonder which colour out of these would suit it best. :P

I really like that shonky MGB because its so shonky looking. However at the same time, I don't really want to be another member of the single and sad thread just yet...

If I had a garage to store it in, I'd seriously consider spending that sort of money on immaculate like that. I do wonder if those "immaculate" examples have had all the effort on the bodywork and not a lot on the suspension + handling.

It's revolting, but it looks like one of those cars that you jump into and be surprised at how well it drives.

For a grand, you can't go wrong. For two grand, you certainly can. If you want a cheap entry into MGBeard World, that's what I'd buy.

... aye, for £350 I'm still scratching around trying to find a fault......  8)

The sales patter puts me off.

They spend much time enthralling you about MGB history, with very little information on the actual car.

Wire wheels look good but can be a pain.

My dad had one before my mum got pregnant with me. So I ruined it for him.

Once in a blue moon we go look at one for sale, but he's now decided he'd be far happier re living his past in a BMW z3. Less character but if he finds a good one it'll be a far more usable almost classic

There's a tidyish looking black rubber bumper job with comedy spot lights AND horrible wheels appeared on eBay for 3 grand with a years ticket.

I quite like the wheels, including the steering wheel.

Seats wouldn't stay that colour long if I owned it though.

My wife has just come in. "What have you been up to?"

I reply "Reading through MGB wiring diagrams and comparing the differences between the years, while eating this cheap chocolate I found in the cupboard."

"You're weird" was her response.

At that moment I realised I may be meeting the stereotypical requirements to be a MGB owner...

The mustard coloured B on the previous page looks as rough as a Badgers arse, just like the ones to be seen still as daily drivers in the 80's. I never much cared for MGB's in those days but I like them now in particular early examples on steel wheels with chrome hubcaps.....

Anyway!

I've been thinking long and hard about that red MGB I saw the other say from Autotrader. I'm a bit stuck about making a decision on it.

Firstly it needs a lot of work. Realistically a paint job (~2k - ideally), interior seats (~£400), brake system (~£300), tyres (~£250) and suspension overhaul (~£300). That'll add £3.3k onto the cost of it. However it would be pretty much perfect.

Also then need to put the purchase price of the car in, so say £2k for arguments sake. That's £5.5k. Pretty much what it'd cost for one in excellent condition to start with.

But then if I spend £5.5k on an "immaculate" one, it still could have hidden things wrong or stuff not sorted. However it'd be ready to go with instant gratification.

I also don't like the colour of the Autotrader one - but thats fixable if it is resprayed. However the cost of a respray is the big turn-off.

Essentially I'm stuck between these two view points:

It's like this:

A rotten MGB is utter shit.

The arse will drop out of it at the first sign of winter, and it'll be worth fuck all.

Rather than looking at rubbish like this, see if you can borrow 3 grand, and buy a really good example for 5/6k. Long ownership, photographic resto work, bearded MGOC owner  - the sort of MGB you want to buy, not the shit your budget dictates. I'd rather pay Lloyds back 100 quid a month or whatever and have a really good car than spunk £2500 on a shitbox that will fold up in the event of a mild shunt.

and

This goes back to my old point ignorance is bliss. Someone will likely buy that red mgb and drive around happy as pig in shit for a the next 6 months totally oblivious to the rot or various issues it likely has.  They'll likely sell it in December or wait until next year and put it in for an mot, which it will probably pass then they'll sell it for near what they paid for it.

But now you've asked, read up on it etc and the weight of MGB owner ship has been passed onto  you'll now spend months trying to find the perfect one and eventually go off the idea or spend twice as much and end up with one worse than the red one.

Arggggh.

Really half tempted to waltz around to the orange one from the start of this thread, offer £2k and drive the crap out of it. Crap paint job with loads of blow over, but looks great from 5 feet. However I also know that its done low miles, so probably will break pretty quick too! Its still for sale there...

Must be a Californian MGB to have a cat...

Might as well go test drive the first one, I've not seen anything yet about you having actually driven one anywhere yet.

I haven't actually test driven any of them, truth be told...

I was going on the basis that they're all going to be a bit crap and will need their suspension overhauling before becoming acceptable anyway.

You might not even want one after a decent drive, they are a bit different to moderns.

Mine was good at 5 feet.

When its going down the road no one knows except you.

You learn to live with it.

Don't worry about suspension, just grease the king pins.
