strangeangel Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 Carb cleaning has commenced... first I scraped as much of the limescale/corrosion out of the waterway as I could: Then it was removed and given repeated cycles in the ultrasonic cleaner: Then off came the top, the crusty float bowl filled with carb cleaner for a good soak, and the jets removed for a ride in the ultrasonic cleaner: More soon... chodweaver, The Moog, richardthestag and 7 others 10
strangeangel Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 Looks like a smoll deep fat fryer! The chips wouldn't be very nice...
beko1987 Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 But very very clean! Did you get the blowers working? Don't make the vents all dusty when you turn it on though, I spent 10 minutes brushing those out! strangeangel 1
dollywobbler Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Worth a look on the BX Club Facebook page. The club's own website has gone very feeble, but the group is still a handy place to ask questions. I'm sure an update on the car would be welcome. beko1987 1
purplebargeken Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Do these ultra sonic cleaners actually work?
strangeangel Posted June 13, 2017 Author Posted June 13, 2017 Do these ultra sonic cleaners actually work? They do in my experience, yeah. That one is a cheapo jewellery cleaner from Aldi or Lidl; can't remember which. I've used it on many occasions to clean small bike/moped carbs, which can be totally immersed in the tank. It does a particularly good job of getting that horrible 'varnish' residue you find in barn find 2-strokes, where the fuel has gone off and subsequently evaporated. The instructions say to use water, but I've used fuel and parts washer fluid before now, both of which achieve better results. I've also used it to successfully resurrect tiny idle jets, which would be damaged by sticking bits of wire up them. The only downside I've found is the timer only allows a maximum run time of 480 seconds, so you have to be in the garage working and keep re-setting the timer. But for the few quid it cost (£12 IIRC?) I can live with that! RobT, holbeck, djimbob and 4 others 7
hairnet Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Calendar shot. fuck no not if you want people to buy them
KruJoe Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 ENUFF ABOUT THE FUCKING CHIN About the chin, it's nowhere near as big in real life. (In much the same way as we can understand what Hairnet is on about in real life.)I'll shut up now, I'm no oil painting myself. strangeangel 1
wuvvum Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Am I the only one who thinks that having front suspension will spoil the character of this car slightly? KruJoe, Ghosty, strangeangel and 1 other 4
KruJoe Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Slightly maybe, but it was funniest when you're outside it, watching someone else trying to enjoy* the ride. trigger, strangeangel and The Moog 3
Cleon-Fonte Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Am I the only one who thinks that having front suspension will spoil the character of this car slightly? I guess it all depends on whether you want it to have the character of one of these. strangeangel, MorrisItalSLX and somewhatfoolish 3
strangeangel Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 Carb cleaning (slight return)... some jets and a formerly crusty fitting, this evening: Float bowl, sans shit: All the orifices of the carb body got blown out with compressed air and then reassembly was the reverse process of dismantling. No picture of the finished article, cos it doesn't look much different; it's functionally clean & I ain't polishing it up to a mirror finish All ready to be re-united with the car at the next working party! KruJoe Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 ... which, all being well, should be happening on Sunday 25th June. Get that in your diary, folks! That carb's looking grand SA. I hope you have no bits left over when you screw it together again. strangeangel 1
strangeangel Posted June 15, 2017 Author Posted June 15, 2017 That carb's looking grand SA. I hope you have no bits left over when you screw it together again. Nah, I counted them out, and I counted them back in again! The only thing to watch for is you can put the jets back in the wrong way round if you're not careful, but I took photos so as not be at home to Mr Cockup somewhatfoolish 1
beko1987 Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 Did you take the pictures the right way up? strangeangel 1
The Moog Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 I fancy coming to help tinker but will be north of the wall on that day. Will aim to make the next one strangeangel 1
beko1987 Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 That carb would look so good polished to a mirror finish imo...

beko1987 Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 It will deffo shine up! I did a bit with cif (just behind the passenger door on the rear quarter) If I wasn't 200+ miles away I would, as I am it might take a tad of planning and I'm quite brassic this month. Given how ace the glass came up, and the rear bumper it will shine! strangeangel and Ghosty 2
KruJoe Posted June 18, 2017 Posted June 18, 2017 Has anyone hit B.I.N. on a new rad or anything? (Coz I havent.) Time to get it ordered if we're to fit it next Sunday... What else was on our shopping list, Jaz?
ruffgeezer Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 This is from a later spec diesel tank but as far as I can make out the only difference is supposedly the filter. Any use chaps? I have the seal and lock ring too. strangeangel and KruJoe 2
KruJoe Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Yes please, Tim!You spend as much time in that tank-top area as any of us, so if you think that will help us, I'm sure we can make it work. Even if the pipe diameters are different, that's no biggie. (I'll pm my address. )
stillOrange Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Does it need a new rad? Joe if you don't mind getting it so it's delivered to you direct, do it.Let me know how much it costs and I will PayPal you the money straight away. KruJoe 1
KruJoe Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Yes, I can do that. Please, this morning, can one of you desk-bound office bods trawl through the radiator listings that Hairnet found, and post a link to the one you think I should buy? One sure to be delivered by the weekend. I have a busy morning, but can click through to buy it at lunchtime if I can go straight to it. Many thanks!
ruffgeezer Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 I didn't see a retaining ring on "our" tank. Can whomever removed it shed a little light on that for me? This one has a plastic threaded cap.
