Carb cleaning has commenced... first I scraped as much of the limescale/corrosion out of the waterway as I could:

 

 

Then it was removed and given repeated cycles in the ultrasonic cleaner:

 

 

Then off came the top, the crusty float bowl filled with carb cleaner for a good soak, and the jets removed for a ride in the ultrasonic cleaner:

Did you get the blowers working? Don't make the vents all dusty when you turn it on though, I spent 10 minutes brushing those out!

Worth a look on the BX Club Facebook page. The club's own website has gone very feeble, but the group is still a handy place to ask questions. I'm sure an update on the car would be welcome.

They do in my experience, yeah. That one is a cheapo jewellery cleaner from Aldi or Lidl; can't remember which. I've used it on many occasions to clean small bike/moped carbs, which can be totally immersed in the tank. It does a particularly good job of getting that horrible 'varnish' residue you find in barn find 2-strokes, where the fuel has gone off and subsequently evaporated.

 

The instructions say to use water, but I've used fuel and parts washer fluid before now, both of which achieve better results. I've also used it to successfully resurrect tiny idle jets, which would be damaged by sticking bits of wire up them.

 

The only downside I've found is the timer only allows a maximum run time of 480 seconds, so you have to be in the garage working and keep re-setting the timer. But for the few quid it cost (£12 IIRC?) I can live with that!

Slightly maybe, but it was funniest when you're outside it, watching someone else trying to enjoy* the ride.

I guess it all depends on whether you want it to have the character of one of these.

Carb cleaning (slight return)... some jets and a formerly crusty fitting, this evening:

 

 

Float bowl, sans shit:

 

 

All the orifices of the carb body got blown out with compressed air and then reassembly was the reverse process of dismantling. No picture of the finished article, cos it doesn't look much different; it's functionally clean & I ain't polishing it up to a mirror finish

 

All ready to be re-united with the car at the next working party!

Nah, I counted them out, and I counted them back in again! The only thing to watch for is you can put the jets back in the wrong way round if you're not careful, but I took photos so as not be at home to Mr Cockup

It will deffo shine up! I did a bit with cif (just behind the passenger door on the rear quarter) If I wasn't 200+ miles away I would, as I am it might take a tad of planning and I'm quite brassic this month.

 

Given how ace the glass came up, and the rear bumper it will shine!

This is from a later spec diesel tank but as far as I can make out the only difference is supposedly the filter.

 

Any use chaps? I have the seal and lock ring too.

I didn't see a retaining ring on "our" tank. Can whomever removed it shed a little light on that for me?

 

This one has a plastic threaded cap.
