The U.S. version of the Renault 5 was called the 'Le Car', as was a UK special edition, which to me is really stupid as the word 'car' means 'coach' or 'because' in French. Also, it should have been 'La Car', because in the French language vehicles are feminine for some weird reason - 'le' is masculine, whereas 'la' is feminine.

 

I presume that the correct 'La Voiture' would have been too difficult for the average non-Francophone to pronounce.

They can't pronounce "Renault" here, so that was the alternative, I guess.

 

Also, for the Ka.. I remember the launch advert on the TV for it. The catch line was "Get into the Ka", every word spoken by a different voice. They had little Ka's flying around like bees, and assorted oddness.

They started out calling it the Ka (spoken Kaah), don't know why they decided to renege on that.

 

I've got that commerical on VHS tape somewhere. Along with a commercial for the Fiat Tempra "Designed for life", really should have been the Fiat Temporary or perhaps the Temperamental, don't recall many really lasting that long on the road.

Because when you get asked what you drive, and you say a Ka, and they say yeah but what car...clever but it doesn't work in the real world.
