Ford Mavericks were column change autos in '05

Nissan Urvans and Ford Econovans were column change manuals till the early 90s from memory

Is there a report a bent TUV telephone number?

Automatic column changes are a completely different story.

I wouldn't be surprised if column shift autos were still being made.

Doesn't some 7 Series BMW have it?

I doubt the Ford Econovans were manual column change, the last American car with manual column change was the '86 Ford Pick Up.

However, the R16 retained manual column change until the bitter end in 1980, so it must be the last car offered in the UK so equipped.

Update: Mercedes still uses the column shifter on a wide variety of their cars and SUVs in full giffer spec.

The Nigerian built 200X Peugeot 504s also still had manual column change.

Einspruch euer Ehren, look yourself, even had a bodged in factory aircon and look at these 50 shades of brown!

I had several of these, here is one of my company cars:

Door fit was like that from new and headrests are for sissies!

When did the Saab 96 finish in the UK?

Allegedly column change was available, though.

Nope... Two versions were available, GR (very Basic) and GL (Basic), no options. Both had same mechanics.

Correction, they were called GR and SR, SR had aircon, headrests and front door electric winders

When was column change abandoned then?

Sorry im being vague again. the Econovans were a Ford Australia thing, I think they were badge engineered versions

They were rebadged Mazda Bongos (E-series), Holden Commodore Utes were available with column shift up to 2000 (cannot remember if they were manual or auto). Column shift was popular in Australia up to the 1990s

I'm not lying when I say I need a column shift W124 more than I need a bigger willy.

Never mind the Kids From Fame, we need Justin Lee Collins to campaign to bring back column change manuals.

I must express my utmost concern regarding my fellow 'shitters' bizarre fetish for steering column phallic appendages !

Are those floorpans welded yet ?

In Europe it was abandoned with the 1975 "Series 2" facelift (which was actually in mid 74).

Produktion in Kano startet 74 with the "Series 2" Version,, the ones made in Nigeria never had column change.

So the R16 outlived the 504 by 6 years in the column change department.

Could it be the last French car delivered with a column change?

Note - I don't accept the 2CV and R4 shifters as being column changes.

E65 7 Series had a column mounted 'lever' until its demise in 2009.

I'm surprised the 504 pickup didn't come with a column shift option as it had seating for three.

Is it too late to start a column change gearbox and alternatively placed major controls thread?

I could supply a piccie of 'random' gauges mounted in a pod - running top to bottom of the drivers side front screen pillar*

*from Proton site - other modders in the universe may agree.

yes, you are right about that. I am not sure they even did 504 pickups in Nigeria, they assembled 404 pickup's there.

Enjoying this column-change stuff, in lieu of further R16 revelations.

Coincidently over on Curbside Classics (the second best internet car place): 1997 Toyota Crown Comfort manual with 4 on the column.

I like these anachronistic Taxis. Note the wing mirrors and the lace seatcover in the rear view mirror. The big lever with the red knob opens the nearside rear door.

That floor rot is so common on French cars. They don't worry about it so much for MOT out there. I had a Simca with both outer sills made of fibreglass and the seat was also held in with the stuff. It still had a French test though. I keep meaning to get a 16 one day after trying a TX 30 odd years ago, the bloke sold it before I could get the cash together.. If I did get one it would have to be a TX but they rotted worse than the earlier cars so finding a good one is getting harder even in France. My 204 is also column change so it was probably a French thing back in the 60's/70's. I pressume you have tried Leboncoin for wings ? I have just brought back 2 front ones for my 204 that are perfect for 40 euro each. I am also hoping to pick up a brand new rear one for the same money when I am next in France in August.

Evidently this kind of floor rot is of no concern to the TÜV either.

Of course I haven't tried France for a front wing yet, but it's a French forum where I was told they are unobtainium.
