Japfest 2017: Some pics

Had a marvellous day at Japfest yesterday, though I ended up having dinner the night before in the same restaurant as some Citroen chums, purely by chance!

The Honda was meanwhile joined by Autoshite-approved Japanese vehicle content (two of them being British-built for a start).

In the neighbouring hotel was this HOT Celica RA28 liftback - a GT2000 no less.

Then, it was the day itself. Naturally, there were lots of Imprezas, Evos, Skylines, bodykits and enormous turbos, but there were also some right treasures out in the club displays. I put together a gathering of cars for Retro Japanese magazine, and one car that received attention throughout the day was Ratdat's Prairie. You can just see it in the background here, while an Isuzu VehiCROSS (also on the stand) jump starts my Honda (because I'm a twat and left the lights on).

The first two cars on the stand were my S-MX and this delightful Honda Accord Aerodeck. Still one of my favourite cars of the 1980s.

These Nissan Sylvias came all the way from The Netherlands! The white one is a Grand Prix.

I absolutely adore Honda Z600s.

I'm pretty fond of Daihatsu Miras too, even if these are new-fangled four-cylinder ones.

There were at least two Piazzas present.

Then Mr Alcyone invaded my display in a stolen Daihatsu Applause.

People were AMAZED by the tailgate.

Then Skylines happened. Yes, two R30 models. This was the era before they got all silly with power outputs and spoilers, and knew a great deal about straight lines.

If this works, it's a video made up of photos of the stand, including Hirst's Prelude. https://business.facebook.com/320396151629056/videos/434729003529103/

The day was laced with drift and track session action. I didn't see much of that, but did make it into the grandstand in time to see a Mk1 Civic tearing past five much faster cars through the bends at the Complex. Nice one sir!

That's all for now. I have many more photos to sift through. A grand event though, and we're doing it all again at Donington on 1st July. I'd better find some more cars...

So Mr Alcyone stole Captain Slow's Applause instead of visiting me in the Piazza yesterday at 11 O'clock.

I recognise the 2cv van. Belonged to a chap in Northborough a couple of years ago.

Different van. Chap in Northborough is a pal of mine, currently preparing his 2CV Van for the trip to Portgual this summer - full family trip, with three children. This one was owned by another friend in the South West of England, before being sold only last week to yet another friend of mine, this time in The Midlands. They happened to meeting mutual friends (in the BX Hurricane) for dinner.

Yum, Vehicross, Piazza and Aerodeck. Never been greatly into Japanese cars but Isuzus, Daihatsus and 80s Hondas are exceptions.

Dw - you prob need a drivers courtesy light switch if you left your lights on with no bing bong warning

Well, it was more that it wouldn't start, and that I had a ton of stuff on in the morning, too.

I think the rats in the barn have been at it again. Don't you just love paying gouged rent prices for your stuff to get wrecked?

Shit. Sorry, wrong thread.

There's something VERY wrong with the interior lights on this thing. None of them work. I have managed to get the 'door open' warning to stop illuminating, but there is no lights-on buzzer.

Is the "dome" fuse ok?

I think so. From what I remember, there's no power to the fuse in the engine compartment.

I would gladly give a home to any of those. I just love Jap stuff.

Was this in the South East? I saw many Eastern vehicles today. Well, at least three.

Silverstone, so not really. There were lots of convoy to and from the event though.

Must be said, Japanese car fans are a lovely bunch. There doesn't seem to be any snobbiness, and genuine appreciation of everything from stock hatchbacks to massively modified drift cars.

I ought to try and get along to one someday. I’ve skipped some other events this year, so perhaps Donington?

If you could bring the Laurel, I'd be pleased to host you on the Retro Japanese stand. You've got my email address I think?

This looks a good event, in some ways i regret selling my Civic as i got on well with the Honda heritage guys and enjoyed displaying with them and would have been there this weekend with it. Sadly the car doesn't get much show time with the new owner as he doesn't use it much which is a real shame as it was the oldest unrestored Civic that i know of in the country and should be getting shown off, not being mothballed in a Dorset Barn.
