Summer car for Brothernaut to go to music festivals

I was going to say 406 estate (having had one) is a good choice but you may be a bit pushed to get a decent one nowadays as they seem to have done the usual french car trick of being everywhere, then in the space of a year or so, almost completely disappearing (as 405's did esp. the estates). That's the case round here, there were loads, now I only see one regularly as it's just up the road.

Plus when estates get past the first flush of youth, they tend to get commendeered as tradesman's vans so get beaten to death and neglected.

Citroen Xantia sounds nice...

What, sell him my Xantia then go and get myself an RX-8?

Hmmmmmmmmm no. *hugs Xantia*

I would probably buy that if I were looking, but my brother isn't as mental as me (in that he's not as interested in working on cars) and just wants something to run for a few months with zero work needing done, and zero faults. Battery light sounds potentially ominous? As I say, it wouldn't bother me but it's not me looking.

However, I will be showing him this thread later to gauge his reaction to the cars posted in it.

No worries. I wouldn't be selling it without sorting the battery light issue. It's only done it since the car has been left to sit for a month, so hopefully not needing a new alternator.

So...

We went to view this, which turned out to be interesting...

First impressions were ok. Little bit scabby round the edges, but a solid MOT, and it ran like clockwork. However, the exhaust was blowing quite badly. Hmm.

Took it for a test drive, and from the back seat I could feel what could only be described as all 4 corners of the car rattling like a skeleton wanking in a biscuit tin whenever we hit a bump. Also an odd scraping in time with the rotation of the wheels every time we turned right.

The seller was Polish, and when asked if he had receipts for all the work recently done to it, his response was "No, but my friend, he work in garage..."

Oh. So that is how it got an MOT.

Then we got to the V5. The V5 had a David McKenzie from Aberlour on it. When asked "Are you David Mckenzie? Can you prove who is?" The seller talked himself in circles and just kept insisting on how good the car was. Also of note is the non colour-coded driver's door handle. The only one on the car that has a keyhole. Coincidence? Who knows. We retreated, quickly. I was asked to slow down after a couple of streets.

Ah, you dodged a bullet, cracking cars those old v/s40s, but that gdi engine is a dog...i guess its lasted this long so might be ok, but i always avoided it due to it being shit when i used to buy amd sell them. :)

If you Google his 'phone number you'll see the other stuff he's had.

An Astra and a Megane. A man of excellent* taste* then.

Having sat with Supernaut as he drove quickly away from a scarily knackered Accord coupe a month ago, I can attest to his 'getting the fuck out of here' skills.

Nicely dodged!

The Xantia deals with housing estate speed bumps very effectively.

He wants to look at this.

I said I'd give him a lift to the train station.

It does look like a good buy, actually. I just can't be fucked driving all the way to Perth and back this weekend, seeing as I barely had a weekend last week due to my sister moving house (and taking for-fucking-ever to do it).

EDIT: Never mind. He phoned the seller. The V5 is not in the seller's name, he's only had it a couple of weeks, has no receipts for the "work" that has been "done" recently. Verdict: dodgy backstreet dealer.

What about the Carina E that I'm trying to sell for £300? Nowhere near Scotland, but the price is nowhere near £1000. Looking at it today it could really do with a set of better tyres if it's going to be hammered on long journeys 4-up with luggage, but otherwise it would seem to tick all the boxes.

I keep saying Supernaut needs to get Brothernaut to give him a shedFund for his visit to these parts next week. I'm sure between us we could locate a suitable* and totally reliable* festival workhorse, and I'm also sure* Supernaut would relish the chance for a 500 mile northward-bound drive in a completely unfamiliar and unknown motor if he were recompensed the cost of fuel.

I can literally see no flaws with this plan, and know you're all with me...

My berlingo is still here and needs for nothing other than a new owner (and the screen if he keeps it past it's next mot.)

Happy to collect you from the station too...

There can be only one summer car.

So that's what it looks like completed? Cool.

A plan may be forming. I think brothernaut is looking at a car in Tayport, in Fife, today.

It's a Honda Civic Aerodeck 1.6 vtec with 80k on the clocks and an MOT until the end of July. It apparently needs rear ABS sensors for the MOT, but otherwise it's immaculate, been giffer owned for the past 10 years etc. Also, it's only £300.

Now, the keen readers may remember I tried to get a certain Civic Aerodeck 1.6 vtec back on the road a couple of months back. It's still sitting at the parents' farm. That would make an ideal source of parts (as well as upgrades, such as the coilovers).

I'm really tempted, if he buys the civic, to offer him a straight swap for the Xantia.

However, this is all purely theoretical right now. I've no idea if he's gone to Fife or not today. No sign of him about here anyway.

EDIT: No, he's still hanging about, asking me for a lift to Fife, and isn't open the the idea of a swap until after he's used the Civic for the summer (if he buys it). Blah!

Instead of buying the silver Civic 1.6 aerodeck in Fife... he bought one in Torphins.

101k miles, MOT until December. Tidy little car in general.

His first comment after driving it home? "It's a bit noisier than I thought" so I replied with "Well, if you want a motorway cruiser..."
