What have I done - Sunday collection thread

Just browsing the Interweb earlier as you do, and found a bit of a bargain.

So much so, I ended up ringing the guy and agreeing to purchase.

Initially looked at tickets for next Saturday down to that there london, but seller needed car collecting asap.

Checked tickets for tomorrow and the tickets are about the same price, BUT the first class ones are cheaper.

So I'm off to the big smoke in the morning to collect another Rover 75. Thank God I have a very understanding wife.

I'll try and do my first collection fred, but my phone went pop earlier in the week, so had to dig out and an old Iphone4 from a few years back.

Oh and a pic of the car as below:

Hopefully the motorway filth it's covered in means it's a sweet runner?

Looks like you've got plenty of stickers on the dashboard to keep you entertained on the return journey. Good luck!

Copperleaf! Suits it well. Looks like a longbridge built posh one used as a tool for commuting so I'm going to hazard a guess at it being diesel/conny-se?

That looks great. Bet you itll be a lovely refined waft back up the road.

First class in a Virgin train from New Street to London? Nicely done sir, if so, and well done for avoiding the London Midland service which basically stops in significant-looking fields.

And to top it all off you will have first-class travel back home :-D.

Well that's dinner sorted.

Wasn't quick enough to take a picture but trains just been past a massive scrapyard just before Rugby.

Goes off to check interweb to see if I can find it.

Ah yes, I know the one. I've been using the train to get to New Street and onwards to the University since October. I've glimpsed a satisfying number of EVIL MODERNZ resting atop various stacks of stuff.

Well it's not going well......

Always a bit confusing when you stop at a station you were not meant to??

Going to be arriving late into Euston and then for onward connections.

Looks like it's going to be fun.

20 mins late into Milton Keynes. Hopefully can make some time up to Euston.

Saving grace is have 40 mins to make connection from Euston to Victoria, but just checked tube times and seems to be 7 minutes once on the tube.

On my phone now, so updates will not be as often (Thank God I hear you all cry)

I was going to post suggesting I hoped the seller will reattach the gearknob before you collect it, but I zoomed the interior picture and worked out it was the cap of a water bottle in the passenger footwell. Good luck, and let's hope the overnight rain has cleaned it if the seller hasn't.

Well that was close. Don't think I've ever been to Victoria station before. It was like a rabbit run.

To add to my problems boards had the train as arrived but no platform.

Turns out they have a "waiting" zone where you have to stand and wait for platform to be displayed.

Then you all have three minutes to find and board the train.

Anyone who knows me will confirm I'm not built for speed..post-5176-0-52176400-1489329072_thumb.jpg

Well back in Birmingham with only one FTP that I managed to resolve.'

Well I think I have .....

Details man, details!

Well admittedly the car was cheap, dirt cheap, but there are loads of little niggling faults which I hope to fix quite easily, but a couple that may be a bit more involved.

Seller was totally above board about the faults and mentioned something in passing which I ignored but came back to bite me in the arse.

As was just about to drive off he mentioned a known fault with diesel 75's that can cut out if low ish on fuel (anything under a 1\4 of a tank) just dismissed this as never heard. He said he always keep kept at least a 1\3 tank in.

Well i put a tenner in and headed back to Birmingham.

Car drives really well and was very happy eating up the motorway miles, so much so I may have got a bit blase. 10 mins from home rang my Dad as was popping round there first.

Off the motorway junction, down the hill on the dual carruageway, round the island at the bottom and started to go back up the hill. About 1\2 mile from Dad's. Car then cuts out.....

Checked the fuel gauge and no where near empty but a good way under a 1\4 full.

Car refuses to start.

Luckily there was a petrol station at the bottom of the hill by the island. However rolling a car with no power down a hill with no brake assistance and power steering was interesting.

Added to that I had to wait for gaps in traffic and then do the final manouvere in one as needed to get car to a fuel pump. Luckily all worked out. Put £20 of diesel in the car and started straight away ,and stayed running even giving it the full beans up the hill a couple of times.

Not looked fully yet but wondered if the in-tank pump may have failed which could be why does not like running low.

Anyhow car drove back fine, just almost failed in final mile, but all worked out in the end.

Yep - that's fairly common. If the car is regularly runs low the in tank pump doesn't like it. Mine's fine, but I try and keep it above half to look after it. Should be OK as long as you keep plenty of juice in it :)

That is a beautiful colour; hopefully it will look much more elegant when cleaned up nicely.

Also, good luck with it. I hope that the niggles aren't too much of a pain in the arse to sort out. It may take a little bit of work, but a well sorted one of these is a pleasure to pilot during the most stressful commute. Even after a few months you don't get tired of looking at the dash, relaxing in the armchairs or using the electric blind when stuck in traffic and seeing the reactions of those stuck behind (if it has it).

On a slight tangent, do the petrol models not like being run until the tank is almost empty too? I am just wondering as it will mean that I will need to stop running mine until the needle is pretty much resting on the bottom of the gauge and playing petrol station roulette.

To be honest I already own a 75 tourer auto that I love. This was bought for my Dad so I hope to get the issues sorted and pass the car on to him if he wants it.

This one has heated seats which is nice, but no cruise control which mine has.

Think once everything is sorted I might need to add some rear parking sensors as it's like you need to use the force when reversing...

AFAIK the petrols are fine. It's all to do with the diesel engine & fuel supply system they borrowed from BMW
