Hi. Im Nigel's stepson -in his ongoing absence

A good friend of ours wants shot of this.

Im told its a late 60s 280 merc- parked up because the rear air suspension failed. Hasnt moved since.

Its clearly borked, but the parts may be useful to someone? Owner currently intends to cut off the front few inches for an art install -or suchlike.

That may or may not happen..

Running gear and interior is all there- condition probably ok.

So, its small donations (or near free) and in central Brighton on the south coast.

if of interest speak up quickly -cos it aint staying there long now. Site due for re-development

Thanks

Stu

It's a W108, and the 2.8-litre version was pretty close to poverty spec at the time.

Someone really must take this on and return it to the road, though it's likely to require amounts of welding that would make that AS-favourite Cortina estate seem solid.

Parts for them are not cheap, so it's likely to break for £££ if it's too far gone body-wise.

Lovely old tanks. But the one thing which puts me off many old Benzes is the ugly vertical instrument cluster, hopefully this would have proper dials.

These are like this:

They're lovely cars.

Are these air-bagged?  I thought that was only the SEL longer wheelbase, or is that one of these - I can't tell from the perspective.   Ah'm oot anyway, I have seen how these babies rot!

Those bumpers look good though and must be worth a bit along with the headlamps....

Truly one of the best looking cars Merc made.

From a time cars were elegant.

Fantastic beasts these. Mine was a weird pov spec with wind up windows but an electric sunroof! It was also brown with orange velour seats. IIRC the rear suspension was not air but used some sort of levelling system. Needless to say mine didn't work and it dragged its arse with loads in the back. Thirsty but I'd have one again I an instant. The huge grille and column gear change, combined with the stacked headlights and decadently large steering wheel really made you feel as though you were driving something quite special.

The other detail that sticks in my mind was the door gap was shaped so when the rear door was open, the gap was even and followed around the raised swage line.

I seriously wish that was not as far away  :-(  I would definitely be interested. I don't know if you have tried on a Mercedes Forum, but that might be worth a post on there? Please don't cut it up though.

The brightwork on that is worth a bag of sand alone. Break it and sell on.

For me it's not so much the rust as they were made of thick metal to begin with but I'd be scared shitless about how much the parts required would cost (although to give MB their due - they do at least keep spares for their older stuff unlike many manufacturers) as MB spares prices can be breathtaking.

Gotta be some money in breaking that??? Looks too far gone unless your a mentalist.

This too far gone, to my untrained eye, anyway.

However, rather than scrap it the owner would prefer it went to someone who could use it, for spares. Right now it's just a nuisance but he recognises it's full of potentially rare bits,

But ihe'll not wait for long.

Doesn't Junkman have one of these?

He does indeed.

Front wings, headlights, and especially the bumpers are worth a bloody fortune.

Mate of mine owns a 220 Fintail, been off the road for many years. The bodywork is excellent a parts from the bumpers, ££££ to re-chrome them. Mechanical fuel inj likely to be a bastard too.

One of those in a breakers near me, bumper missing though but grille is on it....are they worth much then?
