Cheapest for classic car insurance

My father had decided he wants my E36 cabriolet and I said the best thing to do is put it on classic and keep his everyday car insured as the car is over 20 years old now.

But the thing is he is for some reason getting some hefty quotes and I only pay £105 on my Z3 on classic and its got a bigger engine and higher insurance group etc etc but for the life of me I can't find my email with who I'm insured with as I'm crap with technology but I know it runs out in April sometime.

I don't know if it's an age thing as he is a very young 76 but his last quote was £295 on classic with a limited 3000 miles a year with Peter Best and he has full no claims and a clean licence and held a licence for nearly 60 years.

I just wondered if anyone knows of who's the cheapest out there when it comes to classic insurance quotes.

Nothing useful to offer, but good luck with the insurance for your dad. The world of insurance is a mystery.

Premiums do generally start to rise again at around 70/75.

Has he tried quotes for the equivalent merc or audi? I suspect its the make/model more than his age

I use Footman James, they will quote online but for the best price he probably needs to ring round.

Other companies people have mentioned on here are:

Classic line

RH insurance

Peter Best

Adrian Flux - cheap for some, slated by others.

Sure there are more, the topic comes up occasionally on here.

I've just been through this, asked here for recommends and the cheapest quote for my expected mileage, 3000, was over £200 for the W124 Merc, soon as you want commuting, cos yes i like to take it to work on nice days, they don't cover it and try to talk you into 1500 miles with no commuting, just eff off already.

So, i've re-insured it fully comp on a normal policy, 3000 miles, 2 years NCD (second policy) for £185 all in.

Just got to ring round, its a minefield, have all details to hand they ask stupid questions.

Try Flux, Footman James, Peter Best. There are many others

Can you not keep the car in your name and add him as additional driver/

I never thought of doing that as it goes it's not insured at the moment but will give that a try.. I guess the worst case scenario is he can transfer the insurance over off his old A class onto it and come next winter transfer it back again then sorn the car he is not using.

There is no magic 'cheapest' so it does mean ringing around several companies, repeating all of the same bloody information. Lot easier with just one car though! Peter S Taylor worth a try I'd say, or Peter James.

As everyone else has said, just keep ringing round/doing searches.

Have you tried regular policies as opposed to classic? I sort my Mother in law's insure out and I've found it to be cheaper for her on a standard policy through saga than a classic one.

I've just had a quick nose on the Peter James site and it looks like he might not get insurance with them unless he pays a hefty premium.post-9282-0-98195100-1485778475_thumb.png

When I went to pick up his last motor he couldn't do a day insure so I went through my insurance so it looks like it could be an age thing.

But it does also say 30 years or older for a classic car so maybe if I get him to phone rather than doing online quotes he might have more joy.

Classicline always been the cheapest for me, but might not be for others. Not sure about their age policy.

They are brilliant at the admin side, very efficient and nice to speak to. If you do find cheaper the next year they are always willing to price match or barter.

Cheap for all, slated & hated by 95%

You need to ring round on specialist/classic insurance. The only company not mentioned so far is Graham Sykes.

Hagerty are ok, reasonable, without requiring 87 pictures, valuation from an owner's club, and your dog's inside leg measurement.

Cheers for the replies he managed to get his insurance through Lancaster in the end for £185 on classic which I didn't think was that bad really.

But Colc is right he does need 87 pictures and the inside measurement of the dogs leg plus be a member of the owners club which he isn't but I'm sure I join some BMW club online, I wonder if I can get away with saying he's in the Autoshite club.

I can't remember them asking me for all that crap on my Z3 and at the moment it looks a right state as ive taken the roof off and have to fit a new one. Lol

They ask for your membership number............... do we have one?

Just been through it with Footmam James tonight, got the renewal through for one of mine, last year it was £150, renewal price £260

Went online, did a new quote with all the same details, £170

Dropped the mileage from 3000 to 2000 (I did less than that last year and am likely to do even less this year, not trying to scam the system) - £122

Hit buy now before the website changed its mind.

Insurance premiums seem to follow no known terrestrial logic.

Thanks  for the above - will be looking to insure my lot (2x Classic, 1x bike & my chod daily) elsewhere after Carole Nash fucked me off so much last year.

Yes, if you look in the members list we all have a number.

But it has to be one of the insurance companies recognised clubs.

You can't win with them that's for sure.
