I hope to sample a 740 or 940 with a full pressure turbocharger one day, as The Wentworth was pretty rapid, even though it was a 2-litre LPT Dogmatic and was more or less an end-of-life vehicle; I imagine that a well-sorted 2.3 Turbo Intercooler with a manual gearbox would give quite a few Bavaritards a shock

The ex-Fowler 760TiC currently in my care certainly does when it feels like it. I've taken on loads of stuff, and it has to be something with over 250 horse, preferably well over, and good traction control/tyres to outdrag it.

Civic Type R's? No problem sir. Smell ya later. VAG TDi's the same. BMW 120d Shiny Suit Pointy Shoes Special? Yep. BMW M135i...err nope. Sorry. Astra VXR Nurburgring, only just got away and that was with the lass driving it, cracking it off the limiter in 1st - 4th. And I got by her down the road by reading the traffic better.

Thing with all of this is, you just glide on...

More boost or another T5 are on my list...

Ah hae ma doots...evidence presented thus far doesn't lead me to worry much.

Although saying that, a good service and going over the boost side's parts, then fitting a proper boost gauge are on the cards. Maybe a wee hurl on the rollers at the TIME ATTACK!/ JDM YO merchants down the road.

Shall we settle it at crail?;)

Won't be happening any time soon, but in principle...aye! Bring it, chief.

I've been working weekends the whole time Kay's been through college/uni and that's not likely to change in the near future. And as I say, there's the boost leak(s) that Ronseal identified for Maister Davie: I'd like to get those sorted, a boost gauge and possibly an adjustable fuel regulator fitted before I hit the quarter mile.

You could also lend it to "lightening Fowler" to pilot on your behalf;)

Except I need to be working, and the V70s nowhere near ready. And I'll be fooked if I'm walking twentyish miles to work in the wee sma' hours.

Updates from SVM HQ.

The V40's death warrant will be signed imminently unless anyone on here wants it for a derisory amount. All I'm getting is fucked about elsewhere and it has to go.

In other news, my alcoholic tame mechanic is on a bender so the Council Estate and 850S are both still awaiting test (exhaust on the 740, welding on the 850) but both should be done soon.

The ex-Wilsonsquared 406 2.1LXDT provided sterling service over the last 12 months but it's looking unlikely to see another MOT; mechanically it's bob-on but even with new outer sills it's looking like there'll be fuck all in the way of inner sills to weld them onto. Assessment to occur this week hopefully.

The Cavalier SRi is also terminally rotten so it's cards are marked as well.

The ex-GaryCox 740GLE is going to hopefully provide an interior and some panels for the silver Turbo to make it pretty again; the Council Estate may benefit from this also.

Sadly also due to mouthbreathers the Y-reg 345DL is also likely to be binward due to lack of time/ability/cash on my own part.

This leaves the Kia Pride as my spare car which is still ACE but quite rotten bodily (badly needs two doors and a bonnet), and the 100 quid 740 Turbo as a daily which is also ace bar high-teens MPG on my commute. This is sadly not sustainable daily as WIFE_CMS is two months pregnant meaning that I will need to go and get something not catastrophically shit on fuel, big enough to cart all the stuff for a child and almost sensible.

I really want another Cavalier but I'm considering anything at the moment as it'll be replacing the 406 - if anyone wants it, gimme a shout.

What you really need is a Cavalier with its own rear arches 😂

I am genuinely interested this time while SWMBO's receptive to new car ideas!

I hear where you are coming from regarding getting a sensible car for when the wee one comes along.

What are 740 Turbodiesels like on fuel? A neighbour of mine about 9 or 10 years ago had an N Reg example (N150JCA, it's still alive and on Flickr somewhere) with the 6 pot VW LT engine. He had a wife and 2 kids and it seemed to to him nicely.

What engine is in the 406? Hdi or xud? It might make a good engine donor for one of my 305s or the c15.

2.1, so XUD11 with the 12-valve head. Not a straight drop in I don't think, though there was someone in Europe fitting one to a BX a while back.

BUT IS VAG.

Currently the only manufacturers I'm ruling out are VAG and Merc 'cos I don't like either of them.

Is LPG realistic in Scotlandshireland?

Yes. I'm in the populated bit in the middle.

Nope. Don't like VAGs and not really sold on a Xantia. Don't like how Xsaras look.

Have to say the Duster is big, cheap and GR9 on fuel although I don't think it's really you!

Your definition of cheap and mine vary wildly; I can't justify 300+ quid a month all in when I get bored very easily!

I think there was once an LPG brick at CMS Towers, I'm not sure what became of it though.

There was, a '92 940 Turbo saloon. It ran it's bottom end and sold to a man who wanted the LPG kit out it for more than I bought it for.

Gutted to hear the Cavvy is fucked Andy!! Was looking forward to seeing it back on the road at some point.

Still I suppose if you are having a fleet reduction it means being able to spend more time and money on the ones which are staying and give them the care they deserve!!

I find it hilarious a man with more than 1 massive Volvo estate is looking for a new family car, when really surely there's nothing more suited to the job?

Do you do Italian? 156 jtd Sportwagon here. Mildly scruffy, but not a bad chariot.

Aye, seems a contradiction in terms doesn't it? Real world though, both my 740 estates are older than my wife is, parts availability is now waaaaay past car breaker stages and round the doors they're doing less than 20mpg. Thats fine for me plodding up and down to work and occasionally towing buses with the auto, but with a bairn on the way I'm gonna need something a bit less heavy on fuel. The 850 is out for that duty 'cos it's an auto meaning the wife intends to snaffle it when she passes her test. It's a hard one.

All jesting aside I actually know what you mean, if my now ex wife is to be believed about being with child as well then I'm in a similar predicament, I've got a car that's roomy enough and decent enough on fuel, but it is VAG and an ex taxi with nearly 150K on it at less than 8years old with a string of already eye watering bills behind it, and although parts are available, if anything goes wrong it's mega money, it's falling to bits and not exactly reliable.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a £5K n/a petrol Focus or something, should be reliable with no turbos or excessive stress to kill it or any diesel gubbins but it'll be slow and boring as fuck, which would be fine if it was cheap but not that amount of money, and for the same as the HP monthly payments on it I could lease a brand new for 3 years, but I don't really want back into the whole Finance carry on, having done it solid for the last 10years. Anything is a risk though at the sort of money I'd want to spend and probably what you yourself are willing to fork out.

It's not even close to a Cavvy but if you can find a low mileage 2.0 DTi Vectra C, that would probably fill the requirement, spacious infact cavernous inside, modern enough for spares to be cheap new and plenty in breakers, cheap to run and good on fuel, cheap to buy, about as reliable as you'll get with a modern, no DPF, anything like that, my old man ran one from 12k to 232k miles over 7 years and had zero issues with anything related to the engine. Clutch let go at 145k and a steering rack or 2 and the usual consumables like coil springs, drop links, bushes, but no engine issues whatsoever, and it was quite nice to drive before it started feeling baggy and leggy.

Shame Dave not Dave's Ovlov is eleventy billion miles from Scotlandshire, as it would fit the bill nicely

It would bar RWD Volvo economy being shite round town regardless of fuel, engine or gearbox.

In fact, the only one getting good figures from their 740 is Dave2K and his is maintained meticulously and has new injectors.
