OMGFTP? MG ZR update.

K-seal, and when that fails - James Brown. Then suggest that she buys something that doesn't have a grenade for an engine.

Sorry if this sounds flippant, but that car really isn't worth the effort or expense. It might be to a shiter, but it sounds like the owner is in the market for reliable transportation rather than a kettle.[/quote

Chuffing hell didn't I say this about a month ago!

I'd stick K seal in, then when it blows go and buy another car. Shit happens!

Well I got text today while I was busy so didn't see it till this evening. The MG specialist, friend, seller has now taken said MG (no mention of whether a loan car was involved!). Non start was down to flat battery and he (The MG specialist, friend, seller) thinks the oil in the coolant is left over from previous gasket replacement, seemed much too much to me and how does this explain the coolant loss? But what do I know? Anyway he's going to flush the coolant out and I sincerely hope that fixes it.

Meanwhile daughter's patner's mother has "heard" that once a car has had OMGHGF it will always have problems.  I told her that it is good that The MG specialist, friend, seller is looking at it for her (because it is) and that if a gasket is replaced properly with the modified version for K series, then it should be fine. But what do I know?

I'd show her a little more fake concern & then stop answering.

Sounds like she has been met with one of those experts we all know, work with or met at a car show once.

Don't get me started on people not happy about loan cars !

I run a little diesel saxo as a loaner . No charge for the use but I request that the fuel used is replaced. I reckon half don't bother ( only going home and back ) and 25% say I didn't have time and give me the cash so I have to make time to fuel it up .

Now I insure , mot , tax and service my loan car but people still moan about it because the central locking is a bit French etc etc .

Told one lady she can walk next time when she came back and said " that's bloody horrible "

CUNTS

I'm taking my car in for mot and service tomorrow. Beceause I am friendly etc and have taken my cars to them to the last 25years, not only will I refuel, but will wash and vacuum said courtesy car, which will probably be a skoda Octavia estate. Karma- what goes round comes around!

At this point I would probably tell daughter's partners mother (or whoever) that the car is probably fubarred, and Vauxhall are doing nice little new Vivas for £0 deposit and £99 a month.

I suspect otherwise you will never hear the end of this until the car is scrapped, four garages and several hundred pounds later......

Well the update texts are coming thick and fast now! Apparently the The MG specialist, friend, seller was not the one who changed the head gasket 7 Months ago!

Never mind I just hope he does get it fixed as I do think it's a nice little car and it deserves a second chance. (as long as she leaves me alone!)

I actually had a customer do that last week . They did have it from a week before xmas mind and they had a dog ( not allowed in the loaner ) so I suspect it was to hide hairs/ smell but a nice sentiment none the less .

She wasn't listening to Mike Bone by any chance?

If it is using coolant and there is no obvious leak such as a hose connection, water pump, radiator or heater matrix but there is no water in the oil, then it could we be going out the exhaust. Could be inlet manifold gasket on an MGZR with plastic manifold.

I had a MGZR that was using some coolant. When a new water pump only improved things, I feared inlet manifold or OMGHGF, but there was no oil in water or water in oil.

Instructions to 'yoof' to check daily, top up regular and keep the elephants down on the motorway fell on the wise ears of a teenager.........l. No checking coolant, Foot to the Floor and temp guage 'went up a bit' allegedly. Yoof's idea of a 'bit' and my idea of a 'bit' differed and the failing HG was lunched 'good an proper'.

When the call came in, all I could on say "you better call the AA and tell them the HG has popped, come and relay you home".

AA patrol was well impressed that yoof had correctly diagnosed fault at side of road.

It turned out to be a metal Multi Layer Steel MLS gasket that had rotted. There was plenty off reddish gunge in the coolant which I assume was some sort of 'liquid headgasket replacement'. A new 'Elastomer' gasket and a few hours work and said kettle has 32000 miles under its belt nice then.

Why more folk who are clueless about cars don't do this is a mystery. An old MG Rover shitheap with engine problems is just scrap.

I managed to nurse the failing head gasket of a 1.6 8V spi mk3 astra for a couple of months about 1500 miles before I changed it (and the oil)

It died about a year later

I don't think she has the handbag to do it

Well she got the car back the other day, but was worried that the seller hadn't done anything to it so went to look for her and it's looking good so far. The coolant is pink and at the correct level, not muck on the dipstick although a tiny bit of mayonnaise inside the cap, could be from cold weather and short trips.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her anyway.

Here's another picture of it, just cause I like it!

Well this had all gone quiet and I was hoping it was all good, but got text yesterday to say that it had failed to start and when a friend tried to jump start it, it made a horrible noise. To add to the problems, the owner (my daughter's partner's mother remember?) is going to Thailand tomorrow for a Month and during that time the MOT will expire!

This afternoon was the first chance I had to go around and there was some good news. The MG specialist who sold the ZR came along this morning and started it, he also agreed to pick it up while she's away and MOT it, so I have to say he has been very good and helpful as he can with this car so far. Now the bad news, the MG will not start again. I tried it and it sounds like the starter motor is stuck or the ring gear has a few teeth missing (rapid machine gun sound). I tried putting it in 4th and rocking the car forwards a bit to free the bendix if that was the problem, but still no different. In my experience a stuck starter is usually just one click, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Could the battery be low enough to spin the starter out but not turn the engine and make that noise?

I'm hoping that the MG man will sort this and my interest will be purely academic. I would have felt I'd been of no use to her except I was able to push her garden fence post and 2 panels back together and wedge it all up with a garden fork. Hope it stays put until she's back from Thailand!

Yup that sounds like a flat battery. The starter is spinning but not engaging so it makes that noise.

Could be earth leads/dodgy starter etc of course.

Oh ok that's a new one on me I've always got very slowly turning over or click the nothing! I bet she's either not used it in weeks or just done lots of short trips. Never mind standing for a Month while she's away will fix it!

I think the ones you've had will be bendix gear starters, I've only heard the clicky problem from solenoid engaged starters.

I had a horrid noise from my MGF starter, sounded like it wasn't throwing the toothy bit out. I thought flat battery too, but even fully charged it was doing it more and more.

Sorted with a new starter.

I had a quick look on ebay and a new starter for one of these is £60 or used for £20 so either a battery or starter shouldn't be too awful. How much of a job is it to change a starter on these? I think the last one I did was a Mk1 Cortina!

Just tell her to scrap it and bring a new MG GS back from Thailand on the return trip.

It'll be worth about as much as the ZR after a week. But at least you wont have to hear from her again*

PROFIT.

I got a replacement from a ZR in Looms Scrappy, went in ten minutes before closing and managed to whip it out ok whilst they're wandering around telling people to pack up and sod off.

And I'm a numpty.

Front nearside of engine, good access, it's got a one Elastoplast difficulty rating.
