Or take the engine and gearbox out of the small city car and put them in the Saab....

If it was the 2.0T then it would be possible to fit in something like an Astra. I think some have put it in Corsas too. However I think it's too fat to fit in the Astra or Corsa. At least I'm not aware of it ever been done.

come on after all this you have to fix it!!!! put some thermals on and get cracking. If you fix it you will have infinite propz from me forever

Okok, I'll at least order the bits needed. Any recommendations on cheap anaerobic sealers? The recommend ones from Saab forums seems to be locktite 518.

Yeah I was thinking of buying it from that seller. The woman I bought that Scenic from said it's been clicking for years, I probably believe it too. Have you tried copper slipping the bolts?

I wasn't planning on taking the bolts out hence the wicking type threadlock

 

They do need tightening again though

2.4hrs to change valve body according to autodata. That means the local garage would be £120 to do it.

 

Or for me to do it, nearly 5hours as I'm incredibly slow at such jobs.

Yamabond is great, no idea what it costs if you actually have to pay for it though

I've been pondering whether I should just replace the pressure control solenoids (red arrows in picture below).

These are the ones that usually and most likely be causing the problems. They are also the ones that are supplied in most of the repair kits, like these:

A couple of advantages of just changing them. Firstly the valve body as a whole is a big chunk of metal that is flipping hard to try and move into place. It also has a whole bunch of valves, springs and other gubbins held lightly together when unbolted.

 

Secondly when I was removing it from the car, my hands must have got covered in grit or something as the front of it is covered in it. I can clean that all off, but if any remains and gets into the valve body, all manor of bad issues happen.

It's an option.

 

Then when it works you can strip & rebuild the spare unit your left with & keep it for next time.

2 brand new ditchfinders bought. £80 for 2. Cheapest part worn were £25 each. Made no sense to not pay £30 extra and get brand new tyres.

 

The brand is city racing. Made me chuckle. Really wouldn't want to go racing on these. :mrgreen:

 

This mount also arrived today. No sealer though, so won't be doing valve body this weekend.

Gearbox temps got to around 85C max, so was shifting perfectly. When it's playing ball, it is a very nice comfy old bus to be sat in. There is also something I find weird with Saab's, I seem to drive slower and a lot more calmly. I think it's the exceptional comfortable seats and forgiving suspension that keep heart rate low and de-stressed.

 

New tyres also mean I am slowly a bit more invested in this old bus and increase the urge to get it fixed.

That's pretty much everything needed now! I might also order a thermostat and some fresh coolant too. Coolant is def in need of changing. However I just checked at 1C outside and there is no sign of ice crystals in the fluid - despite being not driven for a couple of days. Its currently my fear that the coolant is so weak that it may freeze over and it'll be game over.

 

Trying to decide how/when to get this valve body changed. Two main options for fixing. £60-80 or so to get the local garage to do it, or I pay £50 for half a day on the ramp at http://ramp-it-up.co.uk and hope that with it on a ramp, that I'll be quicker! I am usually the slowest person ever repairing cars.

I did hire a ramp once to work on my old Saab. Every bolt was rusted, things broke and took twice as long.

 

In the end I just put it back together and drove home and did not on the driveway

I would do the dodgy solenoid thing. GM boxes were known for it, causing eventual trans death and AW boxes may be the same. It doesn't look as though the ECU is part of the valve block on these (Mechatronics) - on those you must wear a ground strap between you and the box to avoid static.

What happens if you book the ramp for half a day, whilst working something shears which prevents the car from being driven and you can't get a replacement for a week. Do they just charge you for a weeks use?

I guess they'd do the same that a normal garage would do ... put all the spare bits in the boot, push it off the ramp, out of the building and leaving it in the carpark...

It's wet out today and happened on the motorway. So I suspect water in wheel sensor.

^^ Not forgetting that a dodgy ABS  sensor can cause auto box problems.

Big box from earlier has told all. As figured...

Currently using said box to update the software on my Gearbox ECU. Same thing as when you update stuff and it says "DO NOT TURN OFF OR INTERRUPT!". If you do, the thing is toast. Pretty nerve racking!
