Stuff as far as the eye can see...

Isnt this literally a brand new car? The dents seemed to have been caused since it was in the yard - no crash damage. I never checked to see if it had been flooded. Dunno why else it would be here, really.

Looks like its owner parked it here by mistake. Nothing visibly wrong and not even any parts missing. Even had 4 half decent AT tyres.

Hundreds of 205s. Nothing close to a hot model though and only a couple of cabrios.

Surprisingly large number of jags considering how rare they are on the roads here.

Shooting from the hip to avoid being seen taking pics, you can just about see the rims bolted on backwards on the back of this bluey that is one of the scrappers the staff nip around the yard with, giving that oh-so-popular Mad Max look.

Next to me in the customer carpark. The chrome badge says 17", the writing on the bald ditchfinder suggests otherwise.

Mondeo probably suffered engine fire or a failure of the injection system.

Daft question but why are people scrapping stuff like old Escort Cabrios? Is it because they aren't worth anything over there or what?

Posted

They are worth loads - All used car prices are a lot higher than UK. Cheapest useable used XR3I cab I have seen within a few hundred miles has been 1800 Euros, so I Assume they get scrapped by clueless people who are changing up to a leased C3 Plurial.

As for the Mondeo? No mechanical failure would write a car like that off here, even if the repair bill was 5k+. It wasnt burnt, so flooding would be my only guess.

Posted

^^^ clocked fixed as cheaply as possible and auctioned if French taxi drivers are anything like UK ones....

Posted

Great to see.

Are breakers yards where they actually sell spares a more viable proposition in France, due to higher price of used cars meaning more people keep them on the road and thus make the effort to repair them?

You may have answered your own question.

Posted

Those Lagunas are quite old to be in a scrapyard, presumably the 2012/13 models are stacked elsewhere

It'll be a sad day when the stock of 205s runs out

I would have thought a Simca 1100 would be a cherished car in France, especially as that particular one looks rust free? Wonder what the craic is there?

Posted

I assume you speak the language? I so wanted to visit a yard while I was over in August but my French is crap.

Posted

That shape Mondeo came out in 2007 so if it had been taxied from new and had 450k on the clock where would it stand with the 5k repair bill?

The cheapest 07 onwards model for sale in my area is still over 7k. There is also a mentality here that carrying out X amount of repairs adds X to the cars value at sale time.

Great to see.

Yes, people like to keep what they have going for a long time, although things are drifting more to leased white Audis these days, sadly.

Is this somewhere you are likely to go back to Dave?

Yes, but not for a while.

Am I right in thinking there's not a chance of taking out a complete car

No chance at all.

17 on the golf is his iq :D

any 3 bolt lna visa or 104 wheels about dave??

merci bien

They chuck all the rims into a big skip then weld them together to make stands to put the cars on. Hard to find certain wheels unless they are still on the car.

The bottom of the wings/a pillars/front end of sills were pretty crusty.

The FSO crew will be frantically soaping each other up in a hot tub with loofahs and 'Matey' bubble bath when they see that pick up truck, spesh if the doors are in good nick
