Citroen XM diesel for sale £250

I'll take some photographs when I get home this evening and add them to the thread but I've decided to sell my XM. It is the Turbo-D model in maroon and I've had it for about three years after I got it from Medway who had had it a long time and done lots of work on it; I believe it had a stint as a courtesy car and was also for a time the owners son's car. It has lots of miles (280000) but has had an lower miles and non-EGR engine and box fitted although with a Bosch pump. It (as standard) has no ABS which saves all the attendant unreliability that can bring.

It has been my everyday car and it has generally been very reliable. The bodywork isn't the prettiest ( the usual lacquer peel and also some dents) however it is very solid and underneath is much less rusty than most XMs I have experienced. It does currently have an issue in that it has a water leak which appears to be from the metal coolant pipe which runs from the water pump at the back of the engine to the 'dummy' thermostat housing at the front. This needs fixing before the car goes back into everyday use but otherwise I'd say that mechanically the car is really rather sound. The suspension is very good both hydraulically and mechanically and I have done the timing belt and water pump. Apparently Medway did the clutch on it. One minor niggle is that the hydraulic pump is weak (I think it's down a cylinder or two because it rattles) and so the power steering sometimes briefly looses assistance. I have the original pump which did not do this but which leaks from the shaft seal although I'm not sure it is possible to make one good pump out of two broken ones.

I would like £250. MOT until end of April. I'm in Liverpool.

Who was wanting the perfect tow-car - this must be the last cheap (tested and running) XM available, surely? Cars which can run on free fuel always tempt, if there are gas bubbles for springs, oil pushrods and self-levelling it's hard not to resist. Hope it stays in this community. Could be tempted.

How much water does it use, could I drive it 170 miles?

I like this and if it's the last reasonably priced XM.......

As six cylinder says, how much water and would it make it across the irish sea??

Hydraulic pump is the really expensive thing if you buy new, but there's the possibility of Pleiades reconning the original. There's also

Nick Goodall in Surrey who has a few NOS ones for under £200.

It's possible I have one to fit this, will have a little look.

My xm holed its rear water pipe, I mummified it in self amalgamating tape and it fixed it (id bought a new pipe, but never fitted it, mine was a rubber one though)

Failing that, the water level sensor is quite long (on the 2.0tct anyway) so when it beeps at you its about half emptied the header tank. So if its just a small leak rather than emptying the block in 5 miles, just take lots of water and keep an eye on the lh display.

Mine was ok on a run with the leak, it was when accelerating it lost the most.

You'd have infinite water if you drove it through the Irish Sea...

From a Xantia hydractive with the 2.1. Even more keen on this XM, if it fits! If it goes to anyone else on here, the pump is yours for not a lot!

You should be laughing as it must be a short hop to the ferry from Jonathon's so you only* have to worry about your end after that.

The overnight ferry is mega cheap into Dublin too......I could nearly just roll it onto the boat. Dublin to Belfast is another 100 miles on top though

The best bit is my good lady wife resides in Liverpool during the week, however has no parking.....and she would hate the XM. (More reason to buy??)

Ugh, I just did loads of typing which the laptop managed to lose :( In terms of how far you could drive it currently the handy think is (as Beko says) the car does indicate that the coolant level is low so as long as you stop and add water at this point you shouldn't cook it. Last time I used it I would estimate the time between topping up and the light coming on was about 30 miles. It seems to leak more when the engine is running that when it is stopped.

PS, I've done loads of towing with the 'pull your house down' specification tow bar. I remember my girlfriend asking me 'is this allowed?' as I overtook a line of ditherers going up a hill on the A68 while pulling a trailer tent. The hardest part is remembering your actually towing!

I'll have the awkward conversation with the Mrs. Given we just had a monstrous hike in childcare costs I'm not holding out hope....

I'm sold, she's working at the minute. Don't let me hold you back if other more able shiters are on their way. But my sales plan to woman revolves round her being in Liverpool currently, and me bringing the kids over to visit her.....she usually flies home at the weekend but we could all come home on the slow boat instead

I've been on the freight ferry to Dublin, it's great sport and all meals are included :)

These freight ferrys.....can one dump a car on for another to pickup at the other end?

Posted

Not sure. Probably costs extra if they have to load and unload it for you.

I could possibly go to Liverpool and drive it to the ferry terminal, but it'd depend on a day and time in advance and would probably have to be a Saturday.

I'm probably getting ahead of myself pending wife approval.....
