Winter Diesel? is that a thing? The £20's would have been BP non premium, the brimup was asda

Posted

Wtf is winter diesel? Does it consist of 2% Westcounty angel tears?

Posted

I've always used the method of as soon as light comes on then reset trip clock. That gives me quite a good approximate.

Diesel waxes in very low temperatures, I remember days when we couldn't get to school because the diesel had waxed in the buses. I think they thin it slightly with kerosene or a similar product to reduce the waxing properties. Not sure if it's a thing any more.

Can I ask why you don't just fill the tank then run it for 3weeks, rather than putting £20in a week? (If you can manage to, that is- I know some folks budget weekly, so running a 3week tank may be odd to budget)

If you did full tank you could keep an eye on it mpg wise each tank-can usually work out when it needs a service/if you have a dragging caliper.

I Use My Cars on android to keep track of mine, can log in the maintaining costs too.

Just a thought

It's 1.20p/l atm. This time last year it was around 1.02p/l. 16% increase. £23.60 for the same amount of fuel what used to cost £20.

Welcome to inflation and the new future.

Cos I rarely have £60 at one time, 3x £20 is easier to ask Amy for throughout the month (since all my money goes on bills and rent, and hers is for things like fuel, it that she always remembers that). Spanked £60 out of my overdraft for this (I don't get charged though, so I'm just minus £60 atm)

winter diesel is diesel with unleaded (i think) in it to drop the gel point, so it doesn't gel in the omgweatherkoas of winter. Will be doped at the refinery and supplied as normal.

Tis definately a thing.

Won't be making a 20mpg difference though. 1 or 2 maybe.

Cool cool, just thought I'd ask:)

Winter diesel isn't doped with petrol, unless you do that bit yourself (and so lose power and mpg). It's not even diesel with kero, but some additives which prevent crystals from clumping together.

Shouldn't have any noticeable effect on consumption, but heavier lube oils and greased around at do, together with longer warmup times.

The diesel anti waxing fluid you can buy commercially is largely kerosene, not sure if it's the same for pump diesel.

Beko, try Fuelly as well/instead, I use it to track my em pee gees and have done for a while now. I don't go for the 'brim it and measure over a full tank' because I see that as being counter productive to drag all that weight around when I pass by about a dozen pez stations on the way to and from work each day. I put in 5 gallons at a time and measure it. this time of year I get about 160 miles on that, in the summer it can tickle 190 miles (32mpg and 38mpg respectively) in a pez auto saab.

its free too.

I am a numbers nerd so like to know the long term average of all the cars I have and then if it drops from what I'm expecting there will be a cause - dragging caliper, sat in traffic, hoonage - which has helped me pick things up sooner than I would have otherwise.

The onboard computer is also about 3mpg optimistic it turns out.

Annoyingly it gave me a stutter on the way into work. Was wafting slowly anyway, changed down to 4th and got some kangarooing. Pulled over with it running quite lumpily, and popped the bonnet. The engine was shaking badly...

Quick rev or 2 and it went fine again and I carried onto work. Sure I saw some whispy white smoke waft past from the back end whilst stopped 12 miles up the road but nothing else...

Might turn the fun screw back in a turn before I leave for home

More likely some air getting into the system on the over run I would have thought.

Are you 200% sure you don't have a leak on?

If jags get 20mpg, perhaps I should change to one as the Laguna is only getting 18mpg around town...

Faaaackin' ell - I'll stop moaning about 33 from the 2.2 dci shall I

I once got 26.6mpg out of my XJ40. Just needs several hours on motorways/A roads sitting at the speed limit & wafting. Oddly it's exactly the quoted figures for a constant 70mph too, so I guess I'd got it running just right.

Well there's no bubbles in the fuel line. Was fine on the way home. Not that I can check these things whilst driving of course

I got home last night and the fuel light had been on for 4 miles (came on on the way back from meeting Pillock, but went off again until I was nearly home)

585 miles, fuck it that's not too bad tbh from a full tank, I'll stop being a girl about it. I could have got it to 600 quite easily, but didnt fancy risking a 45 mile round trip to work today with no money at all, so I took our spare car

And what a hateful journey it was!

I can't work out how to save radio presets (there's no 1,2,3 buttons, its all in some sub menu) so bluetooth music it was (so not soooo bad in the end)

The steering pulls to the left quite alot

The suspension damping is non existant (not due to fucked suspension I don't think, it's just a bit very shit. Makes me look forward to getting back in the xantia tomorrow, even though it's suspension isn't tip top!)

It's so slow! I thought fuck it at one point and took it up to 6.5k revs (redlines at 7.5) through 2nd and 3rd and it almost died at 4k, a proper dead spot, then it shot forward and blew a load of white shit out the back.

Then the bloody oil light came on halfway up the m40, so no more italian tuneups for now as the oil is sat in the garden holding the shed door closed...

(I'm really selling it aren't I! There's a slightly broken DC19 in the boot at the moment, I could leave it in to sweeten a deal?)

Payday tomorrow, and although I don't like to spend money before the bills etc are sorted, I'll lob £20 in the xantia on the way to work! Will take it easy on the way home, the steering shake isn't too bad below 65 (It needs the rear wheels swapping to the front, then 2 new tyres on the front with a good balance and the tracking done to fix that I'm pretty sure, want to sell it before then though)

I bought a phone holder the other day and it turned up today

Its alright for the price. I deliberately bought a screw in one, as I was gonna buy a proclip holder or summat. I had a fact about with positions etc, and in the end screwed it into the dash and radio fascia...

Where it looks OK! Will make using Google maps much handier at least. All I need now is my hardwired charging kit* to arrive and I can finish the job. And rewire the power supply for the Bluetooth thing properly and fit the switch I bought

What happened to the gearknob and the centre console?  Looks like someone's had a disagreement with them.  Isn't that ashtray annoying for when you want to plug a satnav in though?  Useless bit of design that, Citroen.

The cap came off the gear knob late last year during mot-gate, it's sat in the cubby hole at the back atm, I need to glue it back on but tbh I've got used to it now! The ashtray stays open permanently as that's where I keep my rollies! Does open and close fine though. The cigarette lighter bit keeps vibrating out though. It all needs a bit of a clean, but (touch wood) it's been so boringly reliable I've just driven it, and recently I've not seen it in daylight!

Although if you mean the clock on the wonk, all that framework is broken, one job on the list is to glue it all back together. There's a piece of structural cardboard wedged in there that bub told me cures a death rattle, so I've left it! Its a bit more on the wonk atm though as I had it all out to feed the wires to my Bluetooth thing.

A 12v socket, fuse piggy back and a zip tie or two would solve that easily enough though.

By the time I'm done, I'll have a 15w 12v 3a USB a socket (which will get a USB a to c lead plugged into it and mostly hidden) , and I already have a 12v 1.5a micro usb feed that just needs the supply moving as atm it only works with the lights on. Can't stand shit plugged into the fag lighter!

I have 2 fuse piggybacks to use, but at the time I couldn't find any micro fuses, found some now though, so hopefully I won't forget where they are when I come to fit the other stuff!
