Ah. Mis-remembering my own old Reg number. Turns out it was an OJ. Though I'm pretty sure I've had an OY as well at some point. Meh.

It's just as well, because I've only gone and bought it!

I fear AS has reached it's peak - two Ranchos now in the fold - surely it can't get any better than this!

Well done, the beautiful area of Leeds, that is Holbeck ;)...

The pictures you and Braddon have posted don't look at all bad to me. What's the other A post like?

I'm hoping the photographs don't lie.

A Gold one will be along in a minute.

I'm really serious about it.

I have always wanted to do a full restoration on one and i think now might be the time if i can find one

Right, I took a brave pill and have been having a poke about in the brown Rancho's nether parts.

I'm going to stick my neck out a long way here and say I don't actually think this is too bad.

The sills are toast, but we knew that, and I've got replacements for the rear portion which is the worst bit:

The floor is pretty good...

...apart from this bit where it joins the sill below the driver's door:

The rear suspension mounts aren't great and the mounting area needs lots of new metal, although as Junkman said these are quite simple shapes. This seems to be the worst part of the car:

This is a general view underneath the boot, where the spare wheel goes. Nothing too horrible here that I can see. Various bits will benefit from being dismantled, bathing in Deox-C and then getting covered in either POR15 or Dynax UB as appropriate:

This is inside the front wheel arch looking up towards the A-post/bulkhead. Again, nothing too nasty here:

And this is looking forwards at the back of the headlamp bowl:

The horizontal rails that the rear body bolts on to - the sides of the pick-up bed, in other words - appear pretty good but are hard to photograph so you'll have to take my word for it. There's some surface rust on the nearside one where crap gets kicked up in the rear wheel arch, but again I think it's a case of de-rust and paint rather than new metal.

The passenger side a-post looks like Holbeck's silver one, so hopefully not too bad.

Of course, it might* turn out to have more hidden horrors when I start dismantling, but at least I'm not too terrified to start. Probably.

I can't believe this and the other have popped up at a very close time, I am all agog

It's far cheaper to bath rusted parts in citric acid-I've de rusted loads of things with crystals I bought off the web-apparently it's easy to get from cookery shops and home brew stores. If you look at some of the de rusters (like deox) you may see that the main ingredient is citric acid-but costs a lot more.

I've heard that, but Deox does give significantly better penetration in tests - there was a discussion on this on the Detailing World forum a while back. For the sake of £15 for 15-20 litres (diluted) I'd rather have the confidence that there is absolutely zero rust underneath whatever coating I'm putting on.

I think the citric acid will be fine if the surface isn't pitted, but otherwise the extra surfactants in the Deox-C make a worthwhile difference. Most of this is heavily pitted and it's a keeper not a bodge job.

Tell you what, I'll get both and do some back to back tests.

I feel a bit like having to pick a favourite child, deciding which thread to post these shots in, but as Skizzer got his first here's the one I found on my holiday:

Looks OK from here?

Oh. That's a shame.

If anyone is super-keen to find out what they're doing with it, I can pass on details of the body repair place it was sitting at. Other stuff sitting around there and on the forecourt suggests they have an interest in older cars.

Well that doesn't look too bad really.

Do you want to borrow my "Liqui-Technik" vehicle tilter? I'm unlikely to be needing it in the near future. All of that stuff will be so much easier to repair successfully when the sill area is raised up to a comfortable working height and you're not lying on your back with sparks and bits of rust falling onto you.

If you agree to take on the Sierra in the near future (hint, because parents are complaining about it!) I could even deliver it to you ;)

Yo Skizz, if you can read French (or just want to look at the pictures) I have a Rancho Revue Technique here that I dont have a huge amount of use for.

It goes into decent detail like an old style Haynes manual.

Note - its old and tatty and the binding is fucked so the pages are all loose.

Its mechanicals only, no bodywork.

PM me your address and I will post it.

Yes please!! That's one that bolts to the hubs, isn't it? My only slight concern is that a big chunk of the work will involve removing the back axle, but it'll still be good for working on the sills and replacing brake pipes and fuel lines and exhaust and stuff.

If JohnK isn't ready to have custody of the Sierra yet then I'd be happy to - except I've run out of storage. Do you fancy borrowing the VX2300 back for a while? Then you could drive down in the Sierra with the tilter, stop overnight and drive back next day in the Vauxhall. Or I could come to you. Or meet half way (Chodmolestly?), or something.
