Siku also made a Rancho:

Here it is next to a Matchbox one:

Then there is the Corgi:

Oddly Majorette didn't bother. Still, not many cars faired that well with three inch diecasters.

Here you can see how the rear sheet metal of the Rancho differs from the pick up:

It's a lot simpler shaped and does not have the dog leg structure of the latter. You can see from the overspray, that rust protection was applied.

In addition it's also quite well shielded by the GRP panels and thus usually quite well preserved.

The reason I know about this is because my late friend Roland had one in his terminally eclectic collection and called on my experience with

fiberglass cars when the RH panel needed repair after a slight shunt. Overlooking the repair enabled me to have this 'insight'.

Should any of the GRP panels have to be removed/mended, it is better to employ the services of a boat builder, than an automotive body shop.

Some wisdom I acquired during my tenure as a Corvette dealer.

BTW, the Rancho appears to have substantial rollover protection.

My mate's Ma had a Simca 1100 - on which these were based.  I thought Fiats and Austin 1100s could rust until I saw that thing.  Nice car, but given to dissolving in front of you.

I always did like the Rancho, mind you.

Wow what a find, I just twigged it on C & C and was about to post it in the tat thread but I'm miles behind.

If it was me Skizz I would just say I'm definitely having it give me your bank or paypal details and I will wire across a dipper. Just in case he changes his mind or someone gazumps you. Your call though, hopefully it will be as good in the flesh. Can't wait to see more pics/collection thread.

Knew I'd still have it

Still got my first caravan too..

Not in bad order, considering, date stamped 1982 and it got played with everywhere! This probably has more miles on it than the one you're looking at. Any of my mates come round to play cars, pick any car you like, but this is mine...got used indoors, outdoors, in the mud, in the grass...I should imagine this is representative of how a real one of similar vintage will have faired

That's the one - shan't bother with a picture.

I have that Corgi one somewhere too. Mine's blue.

I've been kinda thinking that.  We've swapped emails too so I might send him a message to that effect.

I don't think I ever had a die cast Rancho.

Feel like a right loser.

I remember the TV Times giving one away in a comp - footage of one at a stately home, fording water etc.

35 years later it's autoshite.

I entered that very competition to win that Rancho, it was used in the TV show Shillingbury tales and the actor Jack Douglas drove it in the programme. The sad Rancho loving part of me actually Hpi'd the car about 9 years ago and it came up as being in use by the same owner that won it up until the late 90s...the competition was held in June 1981...so it might still be hiding somewhere!post-20412-0-69485800-1478487876_thumb.jpg

Very exciting!

The guy who does our recovery at work owns a few unusual cars including a poo brown Rancho.

He also owns an NSU Ro 80 and various old Renaults.

That guy knows his stuff

But quite obviously he has a bad taste in forums.

I owned this one in 2003 after buying it off a scabby estate in manchester. It had had the floor and A-pillars repaired by gluing plastic sheet over the rust holes. It was copper-coloured when I had it and TBH looked beyond hope. I sold it and it was spotted in the above pic 3 years later on Merseyside somewhere, painted white and seemingly back in the game!

Whatever happened to the one, that used to turn up in the ebay tat thread every so often, carefully* fitted with the engine out of a Fiesta? I can't remember the registration to see if it still exists.

Edited

I just tried googling Ford Engined Talbot Rancho, to see if I could find it but found this instead

It sold and was exported over to Germany where it recently was back on sale for around 4000 euro if my memory serves me correctly.

Hlo470v doesn't seem to show up on the current Dvla on line system...but I've still got the print out from 2007 that shows it lasted from 1979 to 1997...so 18 years on the road...which wasn't too bad!

That expat Rancho in Germany is still fore sail.

The seller says he owns five (!) Ranchos and bought it merely for the 'X' auxiliary lights, so they are not included in the sale.

He also claims, that the car is structurally sound, so reverting to the original drivetrain would actually be feasible.

All things considered, the asking price is IMO as optimistic as the man, who thought his wife gave up smoking cigarettes,

when he found cigar butts around the house.

The Rancho also had a staring role in the very first London Marathon in 1981 as the lead timing car.post-20412-0-86668500-1470696750_thumb.jpg

And Toyah Wilcox pinched a pair of Rancho spotlamps for her prime autoshite constructed chariot that she rode in her Thunder in the mountains video!post-20412-0-93672900-1470697145_thumb.jpg

Not sure how popular the La Boum films were in the UK, but this one was quite prominently featured:

This is great stuff Skizzer!! 8) 8)

As a kid I had a blue matchbox rancho that came in a double pack with a horsebox...I was recently shown a massive diecast collection of a friend...and I mentioned this and it had him stumped...it was never an official combination...After mentioning when it was, he deduced it was from the bankruptcy period in the early eighties when they'd stick anything in the double packs and send them out the door...

A google image search found this piccie. Note it has just 'Matra' on the bonnet...wonder what happened to that...

Also, one of my favourite dramas - 'Edge of Darkness' has a bit of background Rancho...

If anyone was interested in the expat Rancho, the ad makes exciting reading:

"More rarely it is almost impossible! Yesterday evening times Laboon ran again on TV! To see gorgeously, a Rancho in such great condition (new cars) ...

quite so good this is expected to be currently not!

The Rancho is has !, right steered a Ford get in addition to the island engine together with transmission implanted!

The mileage is appreciated! The searchlights are dismantled, and are not sold with, incidentally, I have only so purchased the Rancho!

The body substance but relatively well, it would be worth a deconstruction of the original

The Rancho is conditionally roadworthy and of course also has a few other little quirks, so who expects a new car, please look for somewhere else next, good luck.

the warranty is expired, incidentally also for about 30 years! All Rancho friends who have not yet quenched, are welcome, unfortunately this is the only my 5 Rancho's I want to sell at the moment! Buy and Rancho in every state! Please offer everything!"

Always a good sign when the body substance but relatively well.

On a different note, I'm awaiting Thursday with intrigue.

Amazing work..

When I was a yoooof in the mid 80`s, there were 3 cars that I used to look at on the way to the bus stop of a morning, an Alfa Arna, a Volvo 262C & a bronze Rancho directly next to my bus stop. I think it was on a B-plate as well.

I`m not entirely sure if I`ve seen another one since then either..

Top work Skizzy.

Like everyone else on here I had a toy one as a kid, mine was a red Corgi one with 2 speedway motorbikes on a trailer. I think it had a folding rear seat operated from a little knob thing on the underside. Will check the loft this evening to see if I still have it.
