Small, 45+ mpg, radge-as-fuque hatchback choices...

Now that I have my estate-come-bed, I am hankering after a small, mental, hatch to take up the slack of the MOT-less  Peugeot 106.  Allied to this is the memory of the "affair" I had last summer with a certain little Y10...

The welding of the 106 I could do in a weekend, but there's no guarantee I'd get the fucker through emissions without spending more than it's worth on sensors and cats.

Bearing in mind any car has to accomodate my not insubstantial arse, and its hit-and-run injured hip - even 7 years ago, Recaro-style seats caused me great pain inside half-an-hour of sitting in it, and I routinely have a 215-mile commute on a Friday and Sunday evening past Birmingham.  Any suggestions on what I could buy to take up the cudgels (and insurance slack...although classic insurance could be tempting) - Fiat Seicento?  106 diesel?  Saxo For/VTR?  206 summat or other?  Yaris SR?  Clio 1.6 16v?  Clio RS?

Or should I just get myself a Rover Metro/114 like I've fancied for the past 10 years and stop being a pussy about my legs and pelvis in the event of an accident?

Shame to have missed out on this the other day...

How about this? A bit bigger, maybe too juicy? Quite rare I think? This is the '(Persona?) Compact' which I think pre-dates the Satria.

The more I look at it, the more I want it myself :)

EDIT: Another one (with high miles) here...

there are still a few nice looking metros/rover 100's are still around. ok so i am biased, what with owning an austin metro....

you should get one of the Rover Metro diesel ones for maximum misery. they are available i believe in PSA 1400 (which are crap?) and PSA 1500 (which are not crap?) flavours, and normally aspirated for dizzling miserliness.

and as for the crash testing results, well the Citroen AX and Fiat Cinquecento both did poorly too, and both of those cars are much, much younger than the Metro was.

a car designed in 1975 is never, ever do well in a crash test it was never designed to pass.

I've had a TUD3 powered Metro, it wasn't too bad other than the inevitible HGF (TUD3s are prone to them, it's part of why the TUD5 has a cast-iron block.)

Get an Metro and employ the NCIS road safety method: Not Crashing Into Stuff.

I got whacked head on by a Peugeot 405 when I was driving my first Metro GTi, and the car (and me) were easily fixed. They're not the OMG death trap they're made out to be.

Thanks for the suggestions - I have made tentative enquiries regarding a shonky diesel 25, which has the added bonus of being able to take the winter tyres on 4x100 pcd steel wheels I possess.

cinq's and Sei's are great fun and probably not as death trappy as you think.

Is that Protein a sporting flavour then?

Edit; ok 25 it is then!

I had the loan Lancia Y10 last summer and loved it but for the bouncy ride - I found myself weaving in and out ofthe lorry-rut potholes on the A1M - but it wasn't undergeared.

What you should do is just come over here for a wee holiday and put this TU9 throbber back together and take it away with you.

What's welding on this time round?

If you are being an old pussy about your aches and pains, if you can stand lower MPG, I've a Bristolian Volvo headache to solve. Even if you aren't interested in that, I might need a spare pair of hands...

I'm admittedly biased, but when looking for a small, fun to drive, economical car the Daihatsu Sirion should always be in contention. I routinely see 50mpg+ from my 1-litre, it's relatively space efficient (the same length as a five-door 106/Saxo but with footwells that can accommodate actual feet), the oily bits are capable of receiving serious abuse without complaint and long(ish) motorway/A-road journeys aren't the pain in the arse (literally) that they can be in some small cars.

The Sirion also has real EuroNCAP stars, three of them, so your legs/pelvis may survive a crash.

Front chassis legs.  The MPG thing is a must, it'll be doing 440 miles a week...so what's with the 'Toli Volvo? ;-)

Oh right, I'll have a look on the Pug here...

MPG? Lupo dizzle? Scrub that, are there any unmolested Reliant Kittens left? Or just go the whole hog and I've done long journeys in a 3-wheeler - the only thing of concern isn't the comfort, it's the hearing loss.

If you're put off by the Direhatsu in some way then an early Yaris might be a contender. They're pretty good at most things and if a 1.3 did 43mpg average whilst being driven enthusiastically then it shouldn't be hard to get 45mpg from 1 or 1.3 litre units.

Yo Cameron, Will's red Boschtastic 106 will be up for grabs again within a few weeks...

Another thought, I wonder if it's worth the trouble dragging your 106's sorry arse over to my tame MOT man to let his machine have a sniff at it... He has a few tricks to nurse borderline* examples through a test.

The ex-Rainagain 16V 1.4 Punto can be hurried along and gets into the 50s on a run even with spirited driving. It's maybe a bit too modern (54 plate) but if I found myself in need of a daily, which might happen soon, I'd be looking for one.

Two good options to fit a similar criteria that I've always had top of the recommend list are the ludo or arosa, which has big doors and comfy seats for a small car, group two insurance, quite solid, or a 1.4hdi 206 which does 70mpg if you go easy

Sorry Cameron, this TUD5 may be available from next Thursday, depending on what happens to wor Will that day.

He did have it at £300 including 100 litres of cabbage_juice, but the test is a bit shorter now (27th Nov), so I'm sure a deal could be done.

Thanks for the suggestions - as I think I mentioned on the other board, I have my eye on a Rover 25 TD of shonky appearance in webbed-feet country, depending on how MOT things go. :)

I know its a bit modern for us, but i used to work with a chap who did some 120 miles to work and back every day in his Citroen C2, his had the 1.4HDi motor so no dpf to worry about.

He took the rear seats out and turned it into his van, to be fair he maintained it well but at 150k plus last time i saw it was still a solid little trouble free motor and returning well over 60 and sometimes over 70mpg on his single carriageway A road commute.

It does make a great 2 seater, and more roomy in the front than you might imagine.

IMO a worthy heir to the 106, still light and gets a turbo on the Diesel, which would have made 106/Saxo a gem.

There's no bloody underfelt around the rear arches under the plastic trim nor under the rear seat/boot so well worth £50 worth of self adhesive soundproofing pads to cut the road roar down...i've done this with several cars now including the family Aygo which is now remarkably quiet on the road.

The early SWB RAV is bad for that too. A mod worth doing. Free carpet off-cuts for the mingebag win.

In other news, the red 106 1.5D is going for a test this pm, so it can be moved on with a full ticket. Interested parties shout up!

Oh dear, I may have to renage on a machine from the flatlands...
