Notched another 12 miles up in today, what a bloody good laugh to drive. Almost addictive!

Thanks, Billy. Ever since you bought your SUMMER RAG TOP SPORTS CAR, it's done nothing but PISS DOWN!

Get the fucker sold.

You should be able to park Midget and MX5 next to each other and when missus Cavcraft goes all WTF, claim she is seeing double and needs a vacation ASAP.

Purchase life size cardboard cutout of singer from German dance band Scooter off eBay.de to reinforce double vision theory.

Haha, I'd forgotten about the 'Scooter look-a-like' thing!

I was quite pissed when I took this picture last night, so it (car and picture) is even worse than normal.

I'd say that was above your usual standard of foto-skilllz.  If you get completely wankered you might be able to rival David Hockney. Or was he a painter? I dunno.

Fuck me, feather edge TM technology!

Are the 1.8 ones a lot quicker than the 1.6 versions? I'm SRSLY tempted to buy a newer/better one if it's even quicker.

Posted

There's about 25HP difference and more torque in the 1.8 but everyone says the 1.6 is a sweeter unit that loves to rev. I've never had a 1.6 but my 1.8 even strangled by a slushbox is a goer alright.

Some of the later 1.6s were de-tuned to about 90 HP and seriously gutless - avoid!

Also, it always seems to be the 1.6 that people turbocharge. Don't know why...

Posted

Yeah, the later 1.6 from about M reg on has 88bhp and is a slug. Still makes the right noises and handles well so if going fast isn't as important you can just soak up the atmos.

Wheel 'archers' are rusty on that one, could take someone's eye out.

They are getting a bit rusty, been on the radio for years now.

How water-tight is the roof on yours?

Just got caught in a heavy rain shower... Forgotten just how badly mine leaks!!

It seems ace to be fair.

I've had two 1.8s and three 1.6s over the years, there's not that much between them. the 1.8 is better at distance / motorway but that isn't what you bought it for really. slightly higher top speed, bigger brakes and some additional chassis bracing are the key differences.

my current mx is a 1.6 which is a little cracker, it has a 4 branch manifold, decat and stainless exhaust fitted and just loves to be thrashed round the track / twisty back roads. there's been an mx5 in my life for twelve years, they really are great little cars :)

Oh aye, don't see me making any long journeys in it but even more welly round the lanes and what have you would do. Haven't had it flat out flat out yet but getting a bit quicker each time. A straight through pipe if some sort should make the soundtrack even nicer.

Going to have to way lyrical again here, I can't believe I haven't tried one of these cars before. The tyre pressure had been all over the place, so blew them up to 28psi (probably a little too much to be honest) then gave it some down the lanes on the way to work today, and came back on mostly A roads. Hit one of my favourite local roundabouts at the right time and just gunned it round, can't remember when I enjoyed driving so much. Going to have to put a CD player in (has cassette at the moment) so I can crank up some Carter USM and whatnot.

We liked our old import mk1 so much that we kept it for four years - a personal car record. They are happy to kick the tail out in the wet if you provoke them enough, as Mrs TW accidently found out on a roundabout.

Made me smile seeing Carter USM - they were great, and I think I still remember the majority of their lyrics. Was it Jimbob or Fruitbat who jumped Schofield on live tv after he took the piss out of their equipment-smashing antics?

I'm keeping a wide berth from The Blacon cos I know I'll end up owning that.

Good job I don't live there (anymore) then!

Corrected that for you.

The 1.6 was built with low compression as standard, and is more square, so happier to rev. Is apparently safe to about 180 Bhp

Ours is the 90 88 BHP model. It never seemed underpowered because it is very low geared, so 90 mph has the engine, well into the power band

until we retrofitted power steering. Now the bottom end torque seems blunted.

The poverty spec of a standard  88 bhp Monza, means it carries less weight, as no central locking, airbags, PAS, remote boot latch, air con, or head rest speakers.

We have fucked ours with PAS and a glass rear window, and stupid noisy stainless exhaust.

I have done some interesting overtaking on the A41 from Wolverhampton to Chester via Whitchurch, (Billy will be aware of the combinations of long straights, and short straights and roundabouts as it's in his neck of the woods) and it has surprised a few people - not least my wife screaming from the passenger seat.

Here is another picture from yesterday.

They are ace! Drove mine to work today as well and it puts a smile on my face every time. Although the bus of old dears waiting to turn onto the best roundabout on my route looked less than impressed as I tyre squealed past them!

I've nearly had it a year now, and normally I'm planning my next car move... But not this time, this ones staying a while.

I have 2 wings hanging in my garage in the wrong colour but with zero rust.

How feasible would it be to chemically remove all the paint, get them galvanised, then paint them off the car and fit them without scratching the new paint ? It's a pain dark green so I assume colour matching with a can will be "fine"

I never got on that well with mine. P plate 1.8is bought for £400 as a non runner, fixed on the PO's drive (seized alternator) and driven home.

It was good but I'd fell in love with Porsche 944s by then and it replaced an early non PAS 2.5 lux. That car set the benchmark with fabulous handling and steering feel and fun though the MX5 was it couldn't hold a candle to the Porker.  I sold it at the start of the summer for a vast* profit though so it wasn't all bad...
