Vulgalour's Boring Art Market Research Thread

Have you considered an advert in a trucking mag? Some drivers are insanely proud of their rigs.

By their nature though, they'd be one-offs

I'm with you on the E-T hype. Never really been a fan of it. Anything OLD SKOOL FORD will be popular, especially Mk1 & 2 Scrotes, Mk3 Capri S in Bodie/Doyle variants, RS2K in Ray Doyle format with BVR, Sweeney Consul GT, owt TV car related tbh

This will end up a Pop Art (bright, plain colours) piece in red.  I believe that ticks all the boxes.

Don't forget the OSF Ford shite, RS2000's, Mexicos, Escort XR3i/RS Turbos etc... They always seem to be well represented by the big spenders

PT Cruiser.

Routemaster bus

That's another idea: Routemasters, FX4 taxis, Minis with Union flags on roof ... would presumably sell by the bucketload in Americaland and Japan?

Posted

Mazda RXn vehicles, the FD and FE seem also have a rather large OMGDRIFWEPPN following, with enough money thrown around for coilovers and shiny bits.

My cringe-o-meter is repelled by the idea of London Transport and Minis with flags on the roof.  I don't think I'm ready for that just yet.

Those Corollas need to be done in drift spec don't they?  Nobody wants artwork of a stock one I'd've thought.

Red rocket is done and that kicks off what will be the first proper made-for-print item in my new portfolio.

Kin' ell That looks fantastic! I wish I had a bit of talent like that.

I'll give Etsy a try, for definite, especially seeing what items are being bought on that account.  I've got lots of checking to do on printing and posting costs and what services are best to use for customers outside the UK, as would likely be the case with Etsy.  Next week I'll be focusing on setting up sites with the leads I've been given and getting existing sites up to date.

Good luck Vulg, you have some serious talent there, and you deserve to make a few bob out of it

Talking about iconic cars, have you though about some of the rally cars? Ur Quattro, Lancia Stratos and Scoobies etc? I would have thought they'd have gone well.

I always think rally cars need to be shown in action and I'm still figuring out how to do that effectively.  A Stratos and Impreza are on my list and eventually I'll find an image that works.

Worth updating your Facebook page a bit more often as well, Vulgs. Like it or loathe it, social media is where it's at these days - and if your business is going to take off, I reckon that's the most likely place for it to happen.

could always work on an image of them on the start/finish stand? no need for action then but a recognisable location for the car

Or do a swathe of brown under them so they look in the air?

Posted

Yeah, I really should update my Facebook page but I like not getting Facebook nags from it every five fucking minutes.  Tbh, Facebook hasn't generated really any income and a lot of mither but perhaps it will be different if I'm offering printed stuff.

Initial D has a following you could that in the comic book style

I love the anime it's so easy to get hooked and lose an afternoon

Yeah, but if I did a comic it would be called FTP and feature lots of hopeless old chod with the bonnet up.  Actually, there's probably a market for that.

With a simple bright picture like that look at https://www.threadless.com/artist-shops/signup/default/features as a way to put the design on loads of stuff with no upfront cost.

Complex designs don't work as well on t-shirts as something like that jag

Good stuff Angyl.

I hope you don't mind me pointing something out... I'm no fan of E-types either, but this struck me:

The horizontal line at the back of the bonnet. I thought "does that really not line up with the bottom of the door?" So googled it:

Most folk might not notice that, but it hit me right away, so maybe some Jag nerds would be put off by something like that. Worth fixing?

Why not draw the outline and detail of a car and sell it with a set of colouring pens adult colouring in is all the rage

Another one for the list, Sloth, thanks :)

Huh, I hadn't even twigged with that bonnet line, how about that?  I can tweak it digitally and will when I do fiddle about for different colour versions.  If you've spotted it, Jag nerds are bound to get upset by it.

Posted

Been playing around with that E-type picture, amended the bonnet line Krujoe pointed out and put a sample sheet of possible colour choices together, including Heather Pink (or as close as I can get it) and some horrible browny-orange 70s colour that just seemed 'right'.

I also wondered if this might work as a stand-alone poster sort of thing, scaled up obviously.  Sorry, I'm a bit new to all this side of things so expect dumb questions.

Someone on Twitter suggested it would make good wrapping paper.  I'm inclined to agree after quickly mocking this up.

That's ace is that!

I wonder what font Jaguar used in that era on their brochures etc... or if you could copy the font from the badge:

I think the Ford forums, etc... Would pull a bit of cash, Blue Oval sorts are like the Motoring Jihads of the car world, not Oval - Kill it :-)
