Semi-skinned milk.

A nice lady doesn't simply skim the cream off the top after it's stood for a bit, rather there's a big industrial process which reduces the size of the fat molecules to a fraction of what they normally are, which makes it easier to separate the fats and also gives a slightly longer shelf-life.

Of course nobody ever says 'the consumer will be consuming something even less fresh than usual', let alone mentioning that these artificially tiny fat molecules aren't what our bodies are designed for, so the effect is that 'semi-skinned' has more of a fattening effect on us than old-fashioned real milk with all the cream left in.

Homogenisation, they call it. And people wonder why the dairy industry is in crisis even though farmers are subsidised year in year out - big business has squeezed as much nutrition out of the product as possible, supposed to be replaced with profits. A bit like most bread.

If only big business wasn't so greedy, I'm sure they'd make more money.

I can't not say that the phrase you're looking for is semi-skimmed.

Oh yes. Brain malfunction. Thanks. Will leave as a reminder and note to self.

The boy ones are killed once they've been pulled away from their mother. Obviously the girls aren't killed, but they're still forcibly removed from their Mum even though research indicates this causes poorer health and productivity in the herd.

People don't want to know what goes on in the modern dairy industry, they're now talking about USA-style super-herds which never see the grass in a field.

Game over, next question?

Aye. All to sate our appetite for baby cow weaning milk, which is actually bad for us, contributing to osteoporosis, cancer, and diabetes, plus it's terrible for the environment.

Bull calves aren't taken away and killed any more guys . Dairy bull calves have a market value these days so will be reared or sold at auction to be reared for beef .

A few years ago this may have happened as they had zero market value .

One of many untruths about the dairy industry

Oh and many dairy herds now use artificial insemination and have the ability to purchase sexed semen . While this does have moral issues in itself it allows the farmer to make sure the heifer calves are dairy breeds for replacements and Bull calves are beef breeds

I'm married into a dairy farm family and bull calves are still shot on a regular basis, not just at this farm. If you're able to find someone who'll take them on, you're lucky - a tenner a go even. The last few I saw who'd been bought were shut in a tiny cold shed, nothing to do, little food, looking as if they'd wished they'd been shot when a couple of days old.

What should really happen is they ought to be castrated (eunuchs taste better) and allowed to graze with the herd till they're two or three, then slaughtered for meat.

I'd sooner scour the country for a last remaining Sao Penza than live in that future...

That must be a heartless factory farm then !

Down in cornwall it simply does not happen any more .

The problem with keeping them out on the grass to rear them is that they eat the grass that the cows need to produce milk . There is a finite amount of it available believe it or not .

cow s are also nice grilled, or fried if you prefer, and then served in a bun with some onions and mushrooms.

Classic car magazines.

Lovely colour pictures on the front but endless adverts inside and not much else.
