dome Posted September 21, 2018 Author Posted September 21, 2018 Have you got the MAF adaptor and mount sorted? (or if you'd prefer, continue this over PM's rather than clutter up a thread?) The plan was to hack up the corolla MAF mount and make up an intake feeding from the side vent in front of the battery. A lot of this will make more sense once I actually have the parts in my hand. Getting the engine in will be the easy bit, getting it plumbed in and running will take a wee while I'm sure. I dare say the second time I do this swap it'll be easier...
dome Posted September 26, 2018 Author Posted September 26, 2018 Full report to follow but tonight we bought some MR2 spares. In a handy mobile package... It gets to meet its new friend Plan is both will live. Lacquer Peel, Aston Martin, DVee8 and 9 others 12
Dick Cheeseburger Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Excellent! You seem to be developing an MR2 habit!I took mine out for an evening rag earlier, after fuelling up and sticking a few PSI in the tyres. I don't tend to beat the shit out of the 140 on a daily basis, but I do like to properly wind it up every now and then. Tonight was one of those nights. I've gotta say, the 140 is still a fairly rapid little thing when you really wind it up. Having said all that, I still like the idea of eventually trying(for the second time) to get a 190 setup installed when home life financial priorities are more in favour of non house/ family things. I'm really looking forward to your next instalment - Don't be too long now! dome 1
dome Posted September 27, 2018 Author Posted September 27, 2018 So, what have we bought? 106k, lots of shiny bits fitted about 3 years ago then the engine got smokey. It's been sitting since then until I spotted the advert the other day. We viewed it, made a derisory offer and then came to a price we both agreed on. Collection was last night, pre Scotoshite. In Edinburgh rush hour. No MOT so booked in for one locally, cuvva was used for insurance and off I set, into Edinburgh rush hour in a car that hadn't moved in 3 years... It drove pretty well surprisingly with the only issue being a loud clunk from the left rear. The eml was on, code said camshaft sensor and wouldn't clear. I stopped at a petrol station to stick some fuel in it and the fucker wouldn't restart. We left it for 5 minutes and it fired right up. I dumped it at my mates house and went to Scotoshite. Tonight after work I went to get a proper look at what we'd bought. Dick Cheeseburger, cort16 and Aston Martin 3
dome Posted September 27, 2018 Author Posted September 27, 2018 The black one is very good, this one is excellent. It's very good underneath and it's had new discs, pads, calipers, cat, stainless manifold and what looks like a top end rebuild going by the head. Shame the bottom end is fucked. Here's the mess it made of the black cars number plate after a few revs. It goes in for an MOT next week. It will fail on emmisions and a leaky shock at least but that will give us a second opinion of it. At the minute it looks like this will get the 2zz engine and the hardtop/suspension from the black car, then the black car will get sold on. Anyone want a black MR2? artdjones Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 Cam shaft sensor code could be a stretched timing chain. dome 1
dome Posted September 28, 2018 Author Posted September 28, 2018 Cam shaft sensor code could be a stretched timing chain.I forgot to mention, the eml went out when I plugged the camshaft sensor back in! The wire was dangling loose... The engine allegedly got a top end rebuild and timing chain fixed, they clearly never bothered with the bottom end. I suspect that the bores have ovalised as these apparently do
cort16 Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 So the 2 In mr2 means you need to own 2 of them? How’s the roof on the red one? The Moog and dome 2
dome Posted September 28, 2018 Author Posted September 28, 2018 So the 2 In mr2 means you need to own 2 of them? How’s the roof on the red one? Yes, it would appear so. There's only a tiny wee tear in one corner. It does look like it's not been folded down in a while though, I'll probably try and treat it with something to soften the canvas up as it looks quite dry. Is that even a thing? I've used Fabsil before to waterproof them cort16 1

Dick Cheeseburger Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 They are such underrated little cars. I can’t get over how clean the red one is in the areas prone to Sheeran.
dome Posted September 28, 2018 Author Posted September 28, 2018 I smell a roffle Sent from my F3211 using TapatalkLikely not I'm afraid. We need to recoup some of what we've spent on the black one. Shiters price would be under a grand though They_all_do_that_sir, loserone and mat_the_cat 3
dome Posted October 3, 2018 Author Posted October 3, 2018 I dropped the red MR2 off today for an exploratory MOT. I explained to the tester about the plan(as much as we actually have one) so we'll see how it goes. Prediction-Fail for emissions due to engine being 2 stroke and fail on the N/S rear for a leaky strut and whatever is making it clunk. Also stuff like wipers are knackered and tyres might be past their best age wise, that's not a concern though. Stay tuned! Split_Pin, The Moog and Snipes 3
Supernaut Posted October 3, 2018 Posted October 3, 2018 Anyone want a black MR2? It's the perfect time of year to be selling a mid-engined convertible! dome 1

dome Posted October 3, 2018 Author Posted October 3, 2018 Well the results are in and it's not too bad at all. Well, as long as you gloss over the fucked engine... The only surprise was the handbrake. The reason I say surprise is it works better than the black ones does! Will sit down with Duncan tonight and discuss but it looks like we'll go ahead and start stripping the red one in preparation for it's new engine... davehedgehog31, Aston Martin, The Moog and 3 others 6
dome Posted October 7, 2018 Author Posted October 7, 2018 Here's a rare shot of our 3 sporty Toyotas together awaiting their fate. An engine crane has been purchased and work begins in November. First thing is to prep the black one for sale so swapping over the roof and all the better bits from the red one to make it easier to sell. Bucketeer, davehedgehog31, The Moog and 3 others 6
dome Posted October 7, 2018 Author Posted October 7, 2018 In the meantime while I have Corolla to fall back on I decided to give the S4 some loving. It's pretty dry underneath and a bit crusty so, thanks to the rustproofing thread on here some Dynax UB was purchased and I set to it. Up she goes Not too pretty Exhaust, side skirts and arch liners were removed to get to the meat of things. The last garage to remove the exhaust was a VAG dealership Speaking of exhausts, the last 2 MOTs had advisories for a blow. I thought I'd check it out. Oops That seam is actually split. Luckily* a breaker locally had a full stainless system for sale for a reasonable* price. Reasonable is relative with these things as there is essentially 2 cars worth of exhaust on 1 car. I picked it up today-its a Milltek with the quieter option of the 2 available so shouldn't be too antisocial. A bit more noise would be nice though. So, I cracked on with the underseal. First thing was wire brush all the crusty bits and use Bilthamber Hyrldrate 80 rust convertor, then once that had dried 24hrs later I could start on the UB wax. I tried to put a second coat of wax on today but it's too windy. I also ordered up some rear discs and pads-the discs are on the limit wear wise and it's a big lump of a car to slow down. Will hopefully be burbling around soon though. Exiled_Tat_Gatherer, Honey Badger, Split_Pin and 8 others 11
dome Posted October 7, 2018 Author Posted October 7, 2018 With the exhaust off I could also finally got an upgrade I bought a year ago. One of the most cost effective mods you can make to an S4 is to upgrade the rear anti roll bar to one off an RS4 to reduce rear roll a bit. I'd noticed a bit of rear roll when I first got it so I'd picked one up from a breakers but the exhaust being in the way stopped me getting it off. It's now bolted up and ready for action. chaseracer, Split_Pin, Lacquer Peel and 5 others 8
spartacus Posted October 8, 2018 Posted October 8, 2018 It's often maligned but the bolt on 'upgradeability' of VAG group cars, coupled to the fact that many lesser models have artificially restricted power outputs makes personalising, improving and tuning them so much easier. In addition, because there are so many about you can buy things like a top quality used stainless exhaust, off the shelf! Result.Does the underseal spray on, or brush? dome and Lacquer Peel 2

The guy I bought the exhaust from makes a living breaking them and is not that far away from me which is handy. He does know the value of things though sadly but he's a nice helpful bloke. Head over here for all your undersealing questions. http://autoshite.com/topic/33231-rustproofing-surface-corrosion/ I went for Dynax UB in Aerosol form as I don't have a compressor. I've used nearly 2 cans and I'm half way through the second coat. Good job I bought 3! oldcars 1
dome Posted October 9, 2018 Author Posted October 9, 2018 Got a bit more done to this but I'm struggling with the dark evenings. More rustproofing done and I've started putting it back together. I'm waiting for new clamps to arrive for the exhaust and then I'll fit it.Also stripped down the rear brakes in preparation for new discs and pads. One sticky slider had caused a bit of extra wear on one side. At least I caught it before it gets too bad. I took the opportunity to clean and paint the calipers. Black, in case you wondered. dome Posted October 10, 2018 Author Posted October 10, 2018 Fuck me, this is hard work. I took a half day today as the forecast was good. First thing I fitted new rear discs and pads after cleaning and greasing all the sliders, then took some photos of the newly undersealed underside. Handily* the flash showed how patchy it was in places so another coat has been applied. I could then get on with putting skirts back on, then mudguards and all that gubbins. I can see now why specialists charge £600 for doing this. To cheer myself up, I polished my tip I just need to wait for new clamps to arrive for the exhaust then I can fit it, get it back on it's wheels and hopefully make some more noise. And, more importantly, get on with MR2 shenanigans... They_all_do_that_sir, Tickman, Bucketeer and 9 others 12
dome Posted November 16, 2018 Author Posted November 16, 2018 Recent developments involving me, alcohol and roffles mean I should update this thread. The S4 is back together and driving well. The exhaust is pretty subtle from inside the car which is a relief. Almost too quiet. It does sound good when you give it the beans though and looks the part. Next up for it is an lpg service and it's due spark plugs. I need to have another crack at fitting the cruise control too now I've got the right parts. Holidays, work and life have prevented me from doing any Toyota work so it's an ideal* time to bring a new broken car into the fold. Collection of the ex GM and Tayne A2 is on for tomorrow. Here goes nothing... oldcars, cobblers, Exiled_Tat_Gatherer and 8 others 11
