some great info in here, hope you get it sorted Wilson. What a ba11ache.

Might be worth speaking to the PO to find out who changed the oil and see if they used the right stuff or not?

Should have bought a Merc mate, they is sooooooo reliable.

Can you handle driving an Audi A6 with a really loud exhaust blow? MOT until Dec

Yours if you want it

Posted

Park it up, use the ultra reliable 25 GTi.

Return to the Volvo in three years and spend loads on getting it to work.

But don't be like me.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.  I had lots of pain with our S80, what made it worse was that our other car at the time was an ancient 740 with 70,000 more miles and it never put a foot wrong.

If there's one thing you're good at, it's buying replacement cars so hopefully you'll get something else with the minimum of pain.

I can handle anything but public trampsport.  Where is it and how many pennies?

The 25 is serving Mrs WW and has been for ages.  We commute to different destinations so we cannot share it.  She is making noises about wanting something more economical though.

Current form is poor mate.

She laughed so hard that she nearly bust her farting strings when I bought the last one.

Cheltenham, it owes me £100 or so but given your predicament and how pissed off I am with it, just come and get it

Posted

Why so pissed off with it dude?

After consultation with google maps, and to make me sound like a right ungrateful cunt, I cant fit the 10 hour collection in any time soon, so I'm probably going to have to thank you very much for the offer and decline a free car.  Fucking insane as that sounds.

If it'd help you can borrow the kia for a bit?

Posted

Removed the cat to gut it and sort out it's rough running (it was blocked) - put it all back together but it blows like fuck because the bolts are an arse to get to and they aren't tight enough plus the gasket is shite ECP shite that doesn't fit properly

I thought it was languishing?

Caining my aw55 earlier, floored and kickdown, 2nd gear, changed near red line, massive flare, hit red line, BANG now in 3rd gear. :(

Something for you to look forward to!

On the plus side the fluid is looking more red now. May reset the adaptations again.

But also could be that the gearbox ecu had a French moment, because it was fine afterwards the next time I did it...

Notice a lot of mention to 'ATF fluid' - Not seen the correct fluid mentioned yet (sorry if it has been, quickly skimming the text)
If the previous owner had the gearbox flushed, you need to ask Why ?

If you have a receipt for this work, call up the garage that did it and ask what fluid they used.
Normal Dextron shite won't work, well it will for a bit before it fucks seals and gums up the passageways and Valve / solenoid gulleys, it should be to JWS 3309 spec'.

Checking the fluid level also needs to be done at a certain temperature, a quick google should yield this information.
I would be tempted to flush the whole gearbox (and if fitted flush the gearbox oil cooler too) and refill with the right stuff.
Probably throw in a B4 valve too.

If not, if you're thinking of selling it, let me know.

Wow. Bummer, dude.

It sounds like those fault codes are all pending codes, which means they've been detected and stored but not under the right circumstances to put the SES MIL on. (i.e. EML)

So, if that's the case, they don't mean much at this point. You have nowt to lose by clearing the codes, and having the correct fluid installed by a shop using an ATF exchange machine. Also, the old man of the sea will likely have some useful information as well...as to how long he waited to change it, &c.

A trip to a Volvo/transmission specialist is likely to pay dividends, but that sucks if you're poor.

I wonder if the last owner was like the old boys I used to see in Halfords:

old boy: what oil for zetec focus?

me: 5W30

old boy: rubbish son I've always used Castrol GTX, give me five litres of that

me: 15W40 is too thick for that engine

old boy: it's always been good for me, you don't know what you're talking about

Just replace oil with ATF in the above conversation

This could easily be true. If I had a couple of hundred quid I'd take it to an indy specialist and get correct stuff changed in by the correct procedure.

I don't have, unfortunately. So I've bought roffle tickets instead.

Don't fancy DIY'ing it?

Mega easy.

If you don't want to go underneath, you can do what I have done and suck it through the dipstick tube.

20lts of the right spec mannol stuff can be had from ebay for around £50, even if you drop a transmission sumpful 3 or 4 times over a period of a couple of weeks it might well be worth the effort to see if it helps.

If you do decide to change the fluid, DO NOT REMOVE THE BOLT ON THE TOP OF THE BELL HOUSING TO FILL IT.

That's the bolt that holds third gear brake band, it must be filled through the dipstick.

This is what happened to mine and unfortunately I found that out once I'd replaced it. This was why I changed the box, because 3rd was missing. The 'box had recently had a fluid change and they took the bolt out.

I changed the box and shock horror, 1st gear was weak , I got around that by driving in winter mode.

Fluid changes rarely cure a fucked autobox. When it's dead, it's dead. There is much bollocks talked about auto trans fluid - you can often replace a fancy fluid with ATF Dexron II  - Dexron is not a long life lifetime fill. I once replaced the fancy Esso synthetic fluid in a 234'000 mile BMW shitter with Dexron II, did it three times to effect a full fluid change and it was fine.

It could be a valve block, could be a broken thrust washer, could be a shagged clutch pack, could be a lot lot things. What it isn't is easily and cheaply fixable unless you are a) very lucky and b ) can be arsed.

But the engines in these have a value. Bollocks to giving it away - I'd break it.
