Merc W124 200D Berlin Taxi LHD FOAR SHAYLE £350

Alright crew, a lass at my work is selling this:

Its a 200D with manual box so must be as slow as a bastard, if not slower. 120,000 miles, LHD. She's german and brought it with her when she came to england. Its really cool and looks very unmolested. Has a sunroof and keep-fit windows apparently. I asked he how much she wanted for it and I think she probably has no idea, I know she's just bought another car for 850 quid and she said she'd like 850 quid, but then she also said she'd rather pass it on to someone who liked it than just weigh it in. I reckon if someone looked keen and waved £350 around she'd let it go. Not sure how much MOT there is but I guess you can look it up. She says it goes through every year without needing repairs! I'm not going to put her number up but if soneone is seriously interested, PM me and i will put you in touch.

MoT'd until November apparently... Very, very tempting !

Quick plea.

Can everyone not be all RR and go "Would but my cat is allergic to beige" and can someone just buy this now.

Now.

PM sent.

Whats the record for quickest sale and collection? Although the word quick probably should never appear in a 200d thread.

Thats a mega bargain for someone. Those old diesel mercs although slow are lovely old things, miss mine deeply. I happen to know where there is a complete 250D that might be available for spares, Mtex beige interior, and all the parts to convert to right hand drive. If I hadn't just got the ZX etc etc etc.

wish I had a use for this, definitely have a want! Performance isn't the point with these things. Once up to speed they're just as fast as everything else going at that speed. ANd is gold!!

If the colour is "smoke silver" I have a upol 2k aerosol that I paid £22 for that the lucky buyer can have as I'm sure I'll never need it again

0-100kmh in 18.5s, 99MPH top speed.

That's dire. 993cc Swifts are 2.5 seconds faster to 62 and only 9mph slower at the top end. How much do W124 200D's weigh?

Derby

I can't do a road trip.

If it was closer to Bucks I'd have it tonight.

I'm oot.

1300kg, ish. The 200D is properly slow (75hp when new = prhaps 65 when 30 years old) but good aerodynamics mean ok for long journeys on quiet motorways. Think of it as a moveable set of chairs with an unpleasant 4-pot buzz rather than a motor car with acceleration.

It'll have about the same power as a 1.3 Uno and barely more torque. I is interested, obviously.

Christ alive, I was expecting something north of 1500kg. They must be truly underpowered in that case.

I guess it's a taxi for pootling around a city, doesn't need to get up any great speed. Total bargain that is! can join my taunus reversing through maccies :)

Old diesels aren't for acceleration, it'll sit at 85mph all day a lot happier than the Swift would.

I like rubbish underpowered naturally aspirated diesels, they usually punch beyond their bare figures.

They do feel as if they're a couple of tons from behind the (bus-sized) wheel. The 3 litre, even in manual form, has to be wound up in modern traffic even with thinking-ahead driving. On quieter roads they're ace.

I'm getting a bit swollen in the trouser area over this, not a full on diamond cutter but the sort of chubby on that you want to have when nude in public.

Trying to fit some sort of collection in next week will be a bit of a bastard due to having to sort out ex mother in law's funeral. I'll check my diary.

PMd you yesterday, has/d it sold? Have go-faster stripes at the ready.

There are loads of rotten C250 and E300 turbo diesels with good engines, is dropping the newer OM60x into one of these a straightforward transplant?

Potentially, you'd have to alter springing and damping at the front but the gearing would be way too short. So gearbox transfer too, then diff to match. All gets complicated, I've seen people run round in circles with this sort of thing. Best left as is until the engine wears out.

OM605/6 have horrible fuel supply seals and other complex stuff on the IP which can fail v expensively, much better off with the older gen ones if longevity is important. There are electronics needed for the pumps on many of them, too. If you want a quick MB then C and E classes are available so cheaply, even the good ones.

I could possibly help one Sat morning if wanted? I'm busy this one coming but one after might be ok.

If someone wants this it can be stored at mine in Derby off the road and then collected at a later date.

I had a look at the pump on my friend's C250 turbo diesel and it looks like a basic old in line IP, what's complicated about them?

Some are linked with vehicle electronics, older ones not. There was a chap on the vegoil forum who spent several hundred in parts alone just getting the fuel supply sorted, basically the same inline Bosch pump but it was control box which failed, iirc. 17 year old Mercs used to be about saving up to afford one, now they're almost give-away prices.

Just accessing the fuel lines around the pump is a pain, compared with what went before. And because of the O-ring seals which fail, you need to. To boot they have a nasty habit of glowplugs seizing in, sometimes you see them on the bay as spares/repair. If the delivery valve seals start to leak, they can send air round and round the system, much worse situation than the old vacuum stop setup.

OM602/3x all the way, for me. Best would be the turbo'd 603.

- the later inline Bosch pumps have an electrically-controlled shut-off, with a pretty complex set-up.

Replumbing2-1.jpg

To switch off the fuel when the key is turned off, the electrically-controlled box switches so that the lift pump inlet sucks air out of the fuel gallery by changing over from connecting the lift pump inlet from tank to gallery inlet port. It's a right pipe-mess, over-complicated and under-engineered.

That does look smashing. I reckon once you become used to the miserable performance that'll will make a great daily commuter. Also great for rocking up at Canary Wharf like Hans Gruber.
