2001 Peugeot 306 1.4

Got this off Ratat for [NAME REDACTED] who was desperate for 'a car, any car, don't care what it is so long

as it isn't a 1.6-litre'. It was rejected on the grounds of not being German (despite previous statement) and being

'too old' (despite previous statement). [NAME REDACTED] has since bought a 1998 VW Polo.

Moonstone Blue

98,000 miles, 5 sp manual, PAS (not Cholmondeley, assisted steering)

1360cc TU petrol

Five doors, electric front windows and sunroof.

MoT until April 18

Cheap runaround, project or breaker car.

Short MoT, dent in NSR door (still opens), noisy gearbox (but still selects all ratios)

No warning lights, fair tyres, good brakes. Will throw in standard light clusters if price agreed.

£250 OVNO, sold as seen. Collection from Peterborough area.

These are really pretty.

Yep, but the 1.4s are miserable.

Noisy gearbox, eh? Just look up all the tales on the 306 forums of the TU engine gearboxes eating themselves...

I mean, GLWTS!

I actually really want another 306, but an XU engine.

Appreciated. The 1.4s are probably the sweetest of the TUs - not powerful, but happy to rev and reasonably economical.

Get much larger and your're into wallet battering 1.6 TU and 1.8-litre XU territory - similar performance, dismal MPG.

The gearbox still selects all the ratios; the car drove back happily from Louth where I picked it up.

AFAIK the weak point of those MA gearboxes is the crownwheel rather than the bearings. The ones that I broke during my mis-spent youth didn't get particularly noisy, they just felt like the clutch was slipping for a couple of miles then lost all drive.

Perhaps all this one needs is a top-up of gear oil ?

Aye, I remember on the 306 forums back when I had one, people only really wanted the turbo XUDs, the HDis, or the 2.0 pez. The rest were all but ignored.

Perfect Autoshite, then.

It'll be getting looked at. Were these MAs by 2001? Thought the 306s used rod operated BEs; or I'm getting MAs and MEs mixed up.

Having driven 1.4, TU-equipped BXs, I have to say it's a very enjoyably sweet motor, and you get cheaper tax too. Therefore, winning.

1.4's and 1.6's were TU engines with the MA 'box throughout the 306's lifespan.

1.8 and 2.0 were XU and the 1.9/2.0 XUD/DW diesel engines all used a BE 'box (except autos, obviously).

TU's never used the BE gearbox in a 306 - that was only on the last TU's in later generation cars. ME and ML 'boxes were never used in a 306.

Brilliant, yeah. Anyone want to buy this?

Would any of you be arsed with a roffle?

The 1.6 is an XU engine isn't it? I'm pretty sure the biggest TU is the 1.5 TUD.

GLWTS, I've driven a Xsara 1.4 and it was pleasant enough, my sister is looking for her first car and one of these would be ideal.

Indeed, verily amended.

Meet you up the A1 somewhere?

And that is why doing your best to help someone out is not always a good idea,

should have bought a corsa as they are cheep and easy to fix, although a real shit to get rid of.

what insurance group are these?

Great car, great engine and one of the best colours. I hope this finds a home, it deserves to.

Did you deliver it/courier at the request of the prospective new owner?

I fetched it on the premise the prospective new owner [NAME REDACTED] would take it, yes.

It met their criteria; translated, said person's criteria meant: 'I hate Peugeots and am buying a 1998 VW Polo instead.'

SHOULD OF brought a Corsa, you mean?

Parkers reckon on insurance group 9 for one of these fine tings.

Sister_Peel is waiting for holiday pay and looking at a 106 diesel locally that is cheaper to insure than most of the other cars she's looked at, but the rejected 306 may be a possibility.

MUST BUY GERMAN. GERMAN RELIABLE

I'll be looking at farting it up to an MoT bay to see how little / how much getting another ticket would cost.

Purchase price may be adjusted accordingly.

You sound like I, you try your hardest to help but advice and practial help almost always fall on deaf ears and result in an egg/face scenario.

I had a 1.4 306 meridian for around 3 years.

Have a pic.

I have just done a vehicle check and it could still be alive.

Since this is the internet: park it through their front window, etc.

Likewise my CJ, so another vote for the 1.4 here.

Jesus, I would've just left it at the NAME PTERODACTYL's house if he had asked you to deliver it for him, that's not on really. It's not your car surely anyway!

Tough shit. It's my car now, and I'm selling it.

Mrs S had a 1.4 306, and it was a great thing. Not a road burner, but respectable enough, comfortable and pretty economical. Last I heard it was still providing good service to one if the Outlaw Clan.

Verdict:ten times better than a 6N Polo..

The car was always going in my name before [NAME REDACTED] picked it up so I could do (or have done) any work that needed doing. I'll just be moving it on instead of giving it to [NAME REDACTED].
