Happy days, purring like a kitten. A big morale booster no doubt

No chance of sending her off for a "Tell me all" MOT till I get the brakes and the wipers working!

The wiper mechanism is fine, but the motor is well and truly shot! Only one I've been able to find so far online was £176!!!

The master cylinder is cheaper and more readily available, but again, does anyone have one please?

Please message me if you can help, and let me know what prices you have in mind!

Why was there a fire inside the flippin door?

That's what happens when you're a tit and spray brake cleaner inside a seized door lock because you pick up the wrong can! Still, it hasn't done too much damage, just a big paint blister under the door handle.

yeah but... how did it ignite?

Well these have central locking in both front doors, so you would tend to assume something is shorting there - I've sprayed wd40 into car locks many times to free them up, and never had a problem. No big deal, I'm going to take the door card off and rewire the door to be on the safe side!

Clearly Renault were well ahead of their time - I didn't think they installed the standard in-door electrical fire till about 1999.

I'd expect that the wiper motor is probably shared with other cars of the era.  If the mechanism is fine and it's just the motor that's toast you can probably get a replacement from another car.  See if there's a model number on it somewhere, it could be a way to find a more affordable part.  Or knowing Renault it's specific to the 20, like the self-combusting doors locks.

You're not alone: I recently ruined the closest thing I have to an antique: Oven Cleaner instead of furniture polish, only noticed when my hand started stinging.

100+ years of patina gone in a minute.

Interesting road trip today - I went to see a motor factor who still carries bits for all the 1970s generation of Renaults. He's an older gent, and says he is "Trying to retire!" He will be a great loss to any Renault nut if he ever does - he used to own a Renault dealership up to 1984, and what he doesn't know about Renaults clearly ain't worth knowing! Outside, it was reassuring to see a dead Renault 18TL!

He got this as an MOT failure around 10 years ago, and planned to do it up. But the back end got bashed in by something unknown one night, so it has sat there ever since. Happily, it has finally been sold 2 days ago to an 18 "American" owner in Brighton, but is likely to be broken for the axles.

He turned out not to have a 20 wiper motor, however he did have a very similar one for a Fuego, which we worked out would fit, as the mechanism on my car is still 100% ok! Considering the cheapest I have found so far on the net was £140, I was pleased to take a chance at just £10!

It was worth it, everything slotted into place beautifully! Have a short video :)

Also pleased to report that the brake master cylinder has been restored back to it's former glory; all I need do now is bleed the brakes off on all 4 wheels.

I love places like that. Like the shop that used to be in Sipson which was an Aladdin's cave of old bits.

I've just looked it up again and see that Howard has moved it over to Egham. I think he's had a place over there for ages too, as that's where he said the exhausts were made up. For pre-1980s stuff it was fantastic. I went upstairs one time to a room that was 10" deep in radiator hoses on the floor - if you could identify which was which.

I'm liking the sound of Mr 1970s Renault - what part of the country are you in?

My google fu tells me that Cooper's Garage is indeed an independent renner speshulist and their phone number is Cleckheaton 872354, so they're in the people's republic of west yorkshire.

Jolly good, thanks, that's only about 3 days travel from me by R16 auto, rather than the week it would take to get to Mike whatsit in Lincolnshire :-)
