The tank has new bolts so it shouldn't be hard to take off and it needs a new sender unit anyway. I don't think we did fit a filter and we was going to do the carb and i even spent £40 on a repair kit and then my dad managed to lose the bloody thing so never done it! I was planning on putting it on a rolling roll but as i lost interest in the car i didn't want to spent any more money on it.

So a carb rebuild is required looks like a shall try that first,

Where did you find the carb kit,

Exhaust, carb, sender unit, tank this is going to turn out costly.

It was a lovely sunny morning so I popped the bonnet for a tinker,

A quick check of the air filter shows its not that dirty so looks like its fairly recent.

There is a burn coating on the filter housing so could be spit back,

After a quick look around and check all pipework is connected I see these three jets, these two look very clean and the old mouthpiece airline blows through them with ease,

This one can clearly be seen full of baked resin and no amount of blowing can clean it out, even a scoot of brake cleaner failed to remove it.

Aha I thought this is the perfect opportunity to put my middle school sewing class skills to good use, thank you Mrs smith, a bit of camouflage face paint had me ready for a quick dawn raid of the wifeys toolbox where a mid range needle was raided for the cause. Here is said needle doing some sewing type stuff,

After a bit of scraping to remove the solid gunge I could then blow through the jet, after this success I chucked it all back together and fired up the powerhouse where it idled like it did beforehand, since a few blips of the throttle showed no difference I took it for a hurle round the block,

Fook knows what those jets are for but the car definitely accelerates much better now,

I still want more power though but then I knew that even before I started tinkering with it.

I cleared up and headed over to do some work on the scrote and yes the sierra does actually pull much better and even managed to top its previous best of 70,

Thats good news man.  My money was on an electrical malady.  Was it wet out today?

I also had above 80 out of the tinker, so it does have the ability.

I think it just needs a proper tune up now and I recon it will be fine, it was wet and bloody cauld even when the sun decided to poke through for the odd moment.

I still fancy an engine change but I'm slowly trying to talk myself out of it.

Hard decision.

If youve got the time and the skills, I would say swap.  But I'm an arsehole.

don't say that or you will get lumped in with the rr group

I'd stay original but then I have the mechanical skills of a walnut whip and that would automatically remove any urge to do engine transplanting.

Good solid original cars will be sought after one day.

I reckon fiddle more with what you have and it will get a bit better. It will never be earth shattering but already it has become slightly betterer.

Glad to hear its running better, I changed the filter and cleaned that all out but I wonder if the sludge from the tank is drawing up and blocking the jets? A tune up will help.

If you have access to an ultrasound bath, that's about the best thing for cleaning carbs.

Id say stick a 2.3 indenor diesel in it. Who needs to go fast anyway!

The last time I lifted one of those out an engine bay it nearly cowped the damn tractor.

It's not a need it's a want.

Posted

Well if an Indenor diesel is that heavy, it'll at least give the car some rake so it'll look fast.

My old 1.8 CVH could top 100 easily* and that was an auto.

2.0 Pinto is the easyist option otherwise you need more parts to turn it into efi

I'm all for easy swaps and the Pinto is easily the easiest. Carb already so stick with carb. Warm road cam if you want a couple of extra hp without too much additional engine bother.

That said, if you did want to go the Zetec route, I gather one of the single most expensive components is the sump and you've already got the one you need on the CVH. A bonus. But then there's the exhaust manifold, water re-plumbing and additional fuel system stuff you have to add on and it gets expensive quite quickly. Especially now Zetecs aren't as cheap as they used to be.

Or what about an RS Turbo top end on the existing engine? It must be pretty much unbolt one and bolt the new one on.

Out for a drive today again and I recon it would pull the ton now as it definitely accelerates much better,

Here it is being a handy pickup on a skip run.

You didn't even put the back seats down!

No need really as the boots huge.

Due to some shitty news today This will be back up for sale once I get a new exhaust sorted,

Save me from my sinfull modifying thoughts

Shitty news.... damn. Hope you overcome it ASAP mate.

I am sure a home will be found on here.

This week is just going from bad to worse,

First the modern breaks a front spring and both parts suppliers can't help me and now the same motley pair can't supply a fookin exhaust for one of Britain's most popular cars, said it was to old at 24 odd,

Any Sierra botherers got a good supplier that knows cars existed before 2008

Posted

Is that the right one I thought it only had the wan silencer then back box, better check as I've forgotten already,

I'm not a fan of buying car parts from the bay of e as knowing my luck I will end up with an exhaust for a deutz fahr,

Posted

Exhaust arrived and now sent back as it was the wrong one, it ran up the wrong side if the car which has no hangers.

On a more serious note the car now has no Insurance as it's not a classic,

Posted

Not a classic? That doesn't sound right. Have you tried using RH Classic, that's who i was with.
