Former Car 4 Sale, Citroen SM

I saw an ad today for a car that's somewhere between worthless and useless, but might be considered autoshite. It's an early 70s Citroen SM. Besides being French, it's in Wisconsin. Other attributes are it has no rear bumper, bonnet, windshield, or engine. Otherwise complete they say. An actor named Burt Reynolds appeared driving one in the 1974 film "The Longest Yard" in the first scene, but not for long. He drove it straight into a big river, on purpose.

On the negative side, the owners seem not to be able to arrive at an asking price, much less a photograph, and they say "It's in very rough shape". I'm pretty confident no one on this site will pounce on it, foreign car in a faraway land and all, but they did call these Citroen Maseratis. Or did when they had Maserati engines in them.

I scribbled down the email of the seller [email protected] if someone has a bumper, bonnet, front glass, and motor floating around & is looking for a LTR with a girl needing TLC, as they say in the personal columns. There should be an Endless Money Pit Award here for hopeless and forlorn "projects" like this.

I've always hard a soft spot for the SM's. See instructional video below if you do decide to buy.

Watching that, (purely for educational purposes), I have to wonder how you ever came across it, were you searching for Citroen SM, French Maids, or worse?

Now that's a well-fashioned instructional video! If only the same people had made instructional films for my French, Spanish I, Spanish II, Soil Chemistry, and Human Behavior & Primary Interactions classes......I would have aced them. I wasn't dense, but the teaching methods weren't reaching me as emphatically as these petite jaquettes en la cuisine would have. To all you French chaps, that's not a perfect translation, and it's Middle French, but that's the best I can do.

I now know how to change the oil in a Citroen SM. And so does Mrs_Pillock. Thoroughly enjoyable that.

A DS engine would fit which would be the most economical way of getting it on the road. Alternatively if you want to be a real winner I'm confident the diesel engine out of a C35D van would also fit...

I had dinner with ed davidge last year ( he has the four door 2.7 sm engined ds convertible). He said how it's not really visibly faster than the ds 23 Efi. So a ds engined sm would be reasonably similar on then road. Heresy I'm sure, but probably 4 or 5k cheaper.

I actually know a much better method to - errr... - jack up (fnar fnar) a Shitrun with dragon blood based suspenders suspension.
