How do you justify running more than one car (for yourself)...

Well yeah.......and my wench is older now so much easier to catch.

As for drinking......well......just not to excess.

So yes, I'd have to agree!

Running two cars isn't justifiable for me at all.

Even though I'm 30 this year and have maximum NCB and have been driving since I was 18, I've dabbled with insuring a second car and I think my insurance company will go "LAWL NOPE" no matter what it is.

I did some mock quotes to see what someone my age and with my experience would have to pay on general choddage if they had no NCB and it looked grim.

Also, first-world-problem right here, my driveway is large enough for just one car, and the garage was built with the house in the 1980s and was probably too small for a new Allegro at the time. Due to design there's no scope for extending it or doing anything interesting to it (I've investigated that for other reasons), so I'd have to plop anything on the road outside, which isn't really an issue except it irritates MrsYoof as I have to put it quite far up the pavement and right in front of the window to keep it out of the way of the drive.

Obviously going in for raffles then is a Very Bad Idea but I don't care because car for £9.

Just in case there's anything left to prove, I've acquired two other cars today.

I have 20, none of which are currently road legal. I just use my company van. I plan to stick a few on a multi insurance policy and use different ones each summer. I guess it would bankrupt most people to have more than one or two road legal. My neighbours just think I have started my own scrapyard. I guess to justify it I just say its my hobby. I have no kids plus some disposable income. Just a bit of fun really, not hurting anyone, if it came to the crunch id just get rid.

Don't tease us Billy, what hopeless shit heaps have you bought this time?

A French diesel and a Ford petrol. Both suitably dire. Haven't collected either yet (viewed/paid for though) so probably Saturday morning.

I had a PSA diesel estate and it broke so I bought the ADO16 to use while I fixed it,  £35 to insure and free to tax, WCPGW?

When I got bored of the Estate I part ex-ed it for the Disco

When the Disco broke I bought the Cherry to use while I fixed it because the ADO16 was mid resto

When the Disco was fixed I decided to keep the Cherry 'as a spare'

When the Cherry broke I rushed out to buy another PSA diesel estate to use while I fixed/sold it and somehow I have 4 of which the least reliable 2 are keepers because Ms C likes them.

Because I'm worth it! My 124 merc is the everyday car, I was given the X1/9 by my godparents who wanted it to have a good home, and the 2cv is my sisters who is letting me look after it while she has young children.

The grand annual sum of spend on three isn't close to depreciation on a single modern. And all are worth more now than when bought/given. My Mercedes' depreciation was £2000 every single year until I bought it four years ago( yes, it was over £40k new - no idea how as it has no extras apart from ac).

And it's a hobby. I like having older cars as they provide something to play with of an evening. I don't need to travel for work, mostly commute by bicycle, am single and have no children. So I can indulge my whim for old impractical cars.

My nieces do like playing in the Mercedes and 2cv- although the 2cv experience did end in tears after sharp edges were found!

Mainly because I like them and didn't think it was an issue as I am single, own my own home and work.  All but two are insured, three are taxed, three are out of MOT.   Tax is the real killer, I kept them all taxed during the summer as I had some money in the bank, now it  isn't there I'm being more frugal!

I just bought them as I liked them and represented a style/colour/edition I didn't have.  Apart from spending a fair bit on having one properly resprayed it is just servicing and MOT's and the dreaded tax.

The last three cars bought have represented the first three cars I bought after having the family car off dad.  It wasn't done intentionally, just happened!

I did by a modern and it's great for like this week when I had to commute to Leeds, with a high driving position, I feel safer than I would in anything else.  I'll keep it forever so the depreciation won't be an issue - though I do get tempted by the idea of getting rid to get even more cars.

I love this place, it makes me feel normal that I have a dozen cars. :)

I can't so I just ignore the "another one, why?" comments.....

Posted

Long past giving a rats arse about comments about why, how much, what are you going to do with it, the neighbours won't say anything to you but they moan to me......... In fact comments are no longer made, maybe it's finally sunk in! If I like a car, I have money and vaguely have space then hell yeah.

No real justification wanted or needed. I don't smoke, don't do drugs, rarely drink so there you go. Couldn't really give a fuck.

No justification required... 8 cars and 5 bikes. But no more!! (For the moment)!

I just try to not think about it. I have seven out of 11 taxed and insured, really should get some tax exempt cars because paying over £100 a month on tax isn't ideal. At one point I had everything on a classic policy which worked out quite cheap but I now have 4 of them on normally policies so that Mrs FOAD can drive them, she's been driving just under 2 years and doesn't have a "drive other cars" part on her own policy so insurance could be cheaper.

I really should sorn everything and narrow it down to a couple of cars to use but where would be the fun in that?

Footman James and the DVLA on line monthly taxings have been my saviour. Right now I have four insured and taxed cars. For me, FJ charge 80 quid a year fully comp agreed value for an old E36 over 20 years old. I have just added a 1999 318i Convertible and my daily 1998 318i Touring to one of the classic policies - total cost for the pair? £85. So, for around £240 I have four cars fully insured.

FJ are brilliant, I won't use anyone else now.  So, I use my Touring as a daily shitter, the Convertibkle for when the sun is out, a 318iS track whore and my old 7 Series for longer days out. They owe me next to nothing. The E32 was paid for by petrol mileage long ago.

The obvious justification of having more than one car to me is a "backup, just in case"

Hence I currently have 3 discoveries, one works perfectly, one is completely fucked, the other one sort of  half works.

At one point last year, I also had three Subarus for some reason

The most I have had at one time is 11 plus 3 bikes (now down to a more sensible 6 plus 1 bike)

When asked why I had 11, I'd answer - "Because I can't afford 12"

My money (when Mrs BG has taken her 95%) so my decission.

I have my modern for daily work duties. My Rover 75 is a hobby. I pay for it by not drinking , I don't smoke , play golf or go fishing. I get all my clothes from charity shops and buy anything I need second hand if possible. If I had a garage and some mechanical skills I would probably have another car maybe a jag .
