I'm stuck in Plymouth on a course for a fortnight, so decided to grab a cheap hire car (£10.50 per day!) and boost up to Coventry at the weekend.

Just over a tenner acquired the keys to a one litre Focus - The little Ecoboost is actually quite amusing in the Focus, and knocks out 123 bhp from its thrummy three cylinders & 999cc.

Nae bad.

Anyway, some pictures of some old cars being driven round in circles, watched by men in anoraks.

There was a sort of autojumble there, but mainly Ford stuff - I went mental, and signed up to bid at Silverstone Auctions, buying some signed Henri Toivonen pics.

Nice pics, grp B rally cars are all kinds of awesome.

I had an ecoboost rental the other year, and quite impressed too. It was a nice by Daihatsu 25 years ago with a car that weighed half what a focus does.

Mmm ecoboost: cam belt inside the engine where a chain would be. Interesting to see how that turns out.

I like the Esprit rallycar. And not just because Marina door handle flap things.

I'd like to try one of those EcoBoost affairs to see what they're like. Was reading about the engine, impressive in theory but, like you, there are some features about it that do rather shout "Nice idea when the car is new - dunno about some years down the line" (but by that time, manufacturers don't give a shit anyway).

Haven't seen any Group B cars getting ragged for years, should really make an effort to go along to one of these events (sans anorak tho').

I was just thinking that. A wee 1 litre will be wrecked in a few years pulling all that weight about.

Just think autoshite 2025, we will all be having a few numbers in a raffle for one.

Me and Mrs 18s toddled along on Sat and had a good day.

They slightly rearranged the exhibition driving and had more cars out at any 1 time

Firenza was very enthusiastically driven - Made a nice noise  :)

David Llewellin in the WRC Scooby (sister car to McRae's N555 BAT) was impressive to watch too - Great car control.

Great pictures, esp the RS200.

Had an Ecoboost Fiesta last year as a courtesy car, really good to drive. And it made pssshht noises if you hooned it.

Quote is not working, but JUST think about the cam belt.

You can have it in one known liquid, at a known temperature range, and design it to work within strict boundaries.

Or you can design is for every liquid known to be used under the bonnet, from petrol to oil, and brake fluid and PAS fluid and Jizz and chemicals from high pressure cleaners, all of which might require a slightly different mixture.

(I have heard the Chief Engineer at Ford at an IET/IMechE lecture he gave in Warwick university a couple of years back)
