Saw this at the local car dismantling centre (in Wrexham).

Looks nice and tidy. Doesn't have dubious MOT history (bulbs mainly), obviously reselling a car that was brought in for scrap.

Very handsome looking car, the original 406. I had a V6 estate. It was silver, constantly filthy and scared the shit out of anyone that challenged it.

Very pleased with mine albeit the hdi 90hp version. Found out today that you can get 3 kids seats in the back which you can't in most cars. Practical, comfortable family car and no major known issues as far as I'm aware. Cheap to fix when they do go wrong too. Mine's cost me £200 plus £200 for tyres and another £200 for repairs/mot so far.

Things I never knew about this car:

  • It's a non turbo - it's like driving a small engined car
  • It fucking stinks (inside)
  • The 'fresh air' versus the 'stale air' switch is stuck on 'stale air' - the button results in a loud cracking sound from the glovebox resulting in the ambience of a 'fart in a jar'
  • The clutch has that judder from standstill that some of these XUD's have (from my experience)
  • Under the Xsara mat in the passenger footwell has a 1cm thick pile of mud
  • The central locking only works on the passenger side door (bonus Autoshite point)
  • The thermostat doesn't fucking work
  • The rear windows are tinted with black spray paint
  • It has an ancient stereo wedged halfway in the dashboard
  • The aerial has long since departed the car
  • Fuck me, it needs a wash
  • And a hoover!
  • I hadn't eaten all day so the combusting chip fat had my stomach eating itself
  • The heater blower direction cable is seized, so is only blowing cold air into the heavens/windscreen - you can adjust this by simply taking the entire dashboard panel off.

I reached home shivering as if I'd just looked in the rear view mirror and viewed the menacing ghost of Jimmy Saville looming in the darkened boot space.

I feel ill from the cold and the stench, and can smell it on my clothes.

Apart from that though, the ride is superbé. Like the 306, it has ageless styling. It has AC (which probably doesn't work), it also doesn't have that stiff clutch pedal thing. It has all it's wheel trims, and all the interior bulbs work.

It has a towbar with the ball missing (probably for MOT on wiring) which is what I was hoping as I can collect half an RX7 shell tomorrow on a trailer.

Bummer about the thermostat, I've yet to buy a diesel where it's been working.

I had a quick look at the faults, the teeth are missing off the cogs that operate the interior/exterior air flap:

I can't see shit!/I'm flying through a black cloud

Mileage NULL

No doubt will be for sale next week after I've fixed everything.

Good work. It might feel like a non turbo but it's not, no naturally aspirated 406 diesels were sold in the UK.

It's definitely a turbo, had the pipes off and it's boosting, but doesn't feel 'boosty. Do these have a seperate throttle cable for fuelling like the Isuzu engines?

This is superb.

a similar apprach in the 300d should avoid the need for A/C and release 0.25mpg

I don't think so but even in fine health they aren't very quick.

The boost is softer than in a 306 or 405.

It is boosting now, I can hear the turbo spinning up, not sure why the PO said it didn't have a turbo or how I thought it was NA. It has a brand new exhaust from the turbo (put on by the PO). Confusing. It's actually faster and I'm feeling the boost, I only took a pipe off and the filter out.

There's mud everywhere on this car.

Also removed those horrid window tints:

Interior ambience is improved, those windows depressed me.

How can anyone sit in a car as filthy as this was. It was also full of dog hair.

Nearly winning. Hoovered and cleaned the interior, fixing that recirculation switch helped as did removing the putrid mud from the footwell. Rank.

The mud everywhere and the Pikey window tint would lead me to think this has led a life of crime.

I'd be very careful to be 100% legal ,because it could have markers on it with the local Old Bill and you may find yourself stopping to chat with them a fair bit.

Are you some kind of mental masochist or something? I cannot understand selling the Merc estate then buying this.

Looks like a niggly fault kind of car which only a patient and methodical shiter such as yourself can sort properly. I always think that as long as it starts and the heater works, it is acceptable.

I just wanted a piece of shit car to transport my stuff to my new flat -a van sale fell through and I remembered I saw this. I'm offloading as soon as it's done.

Mercedes was unnecessary, I only recall handing the money over for it and not actually anything before.

I'm only doing the cleaning on this as I left work one month ago and now I'm bored shit-less and need to sort work out before I do anything else.

406s are the business. Check for rotten sills but otherwise GR12.

HaHa, sore point, guess what the only thing my 406 failed the MoT on today? I was less upset about the 50p sized hole in the rear of the sill than I was at myself for missing it! Even more so when I realised I hadn't bought a replacement for my dying MIG set last year....... So it'll be farmed out to a nice little place I know local luckily enough. (Note to self - arse in gear - buy new MIG you idiot).

Anyway, lack of performance? I've driven a good few of these and it's fair to say they vary widely, depending on how they've been treated etc. My one really flies for a 1.9 and has only 1.8 on the emissions too (3.0 being the MoT limit). If it's Bosch pumped then you can wind up the fuel delivery on top of the pump a notch or two apparantly (not done it myself but may try soon so shits and giggles).

Central locking fail - yup, they all do that, I got so pissed off with it I've just disconnected the bloody setup now so no problems!

Some clutch judder seems to be a feature of most XUD-engined Pugs I've owned or driven, never been an issue for me though.

Heater blower director flap arrangement has freaked on mine too, meaning only a small supply of air gets to demist the screen - a PITA but not as much as stripping the dash to sort it would be.

Thought you were taking the piss when you said the windows were tinted with spray paint...... then I saw the pics. Sorry. Honestly, what mong did something like this? Some people shouldn't be allowed out on their own.

The central locking works, the little latch on the driver's side lock has become detached so you do it from the passenger side.

The motor on the recirc - take the glovebox off and unscrew the motor, then operate by hand.

When I first saw the plate I thought it was Irish.

(Lost his marbles and somebody stole his senses.)

That fly is bloody annoying.

Posted

Mine oddly enough doesn't seem to have the clutch judder; the offside sill is crunchy, nearside seems to be OK. my heater controls all work too, but the central locking is all to cock - drivers side lock is siezed solid and the nearside one now just turns the barrel so I tend to go in via the boot.

Now that is the essence of AS!

The driver's door lock barrel on my van doesn't work, and I broke the exterior passenger side handle when I jammed the seatbelt in it.

I just don't bother locking it.
