Horsebox Shite - Do you want Rice with that?

Recommended Posts

We all the know the story, someone makes a daft low bid on an item and then 'ping' conratulations you won.

My mate Jim has won a Horsebox for £100. What could possibly go wrong?

Allegedly it's a Rice, each tyre is different and in a different stage of knackered, it needs a bit of welding, the brakes need recommissioning, possibly wheel bearing issues, needs a new floor, auto braking tow bar needs fixing possibly replacing, it needs re wiring and new lights on the mud guards where there are none presently.

Other than that, it's great, but it's been left on my lawn!

Secretly I am happy that it's here, I get to play with something that I don't think I can make worse!

Updates to follow

I'm calling Steal on that!  I wanted one as a car-booting trailer a few years ago (shit, 2006, really?) and couldn't get one at that kind of price AT ALL, let alone in such good condition.  In the end I bought a caravan that had been stripped out, which served me very well indeed...

It's going to cost a bit to sort. Spoke to local trusted tyre fitter. Budget ditch finders at £65 each fitted.

Need to get the welding assessed before anything is purchased. Hope to make a start at the weekend when I get it inside my shed.

If it all goes wrong it's destined to be a log store or possibly a chicken coop!

I found "debica" were the cheapest 8 ply I could get, I got them for £23+vat at trade, worth a Google

Good luck with that, I have one in at work that to be brutally honest looks way less awful than that, and it's bill for rectification is around £1,300!

That's 4 new tyres, 2 cables, 4 new brake sets & back plates (welded on FFS) a complete rewire and a few new marker lights.

I think these have the same unobtanium Rubery owen axles as my car trailer

Too the untrained eye it looks quite solid, good patina...

Weekend is the big reveal...

If anyone knows where to get spares for this thing, that would be helpful or pointers on 'what fits'!

Did better than the two people that have bid on this heap

It's really going to depend on whose axles live under it, the sheepshit transporter I'm working on has Knott axles with land rover looking wheels on...

Put some weight in it before you do anything else, it may tow OK and look fine but you need to see if the axle bushes are any good. If not then the tyre will rub on the chassis.

No idea how easy to change or how available the bits are, I just stuck mine in the Auctions ☺

THAT is how to car boot!

This is in leaf springs, which looked ok at s glance. Shackle bolts obscured by the wheels so again part of the reveal on Sunday.

Still workouts out as a cheap log store if it is a basket case!

Always stick it on etsy as some contemporary art thing and charge a grand for it.

That looks exactly like one I owned many years ago. I still have the rear ramp which is in serviceable condition, free if you can collect it.

Mine was on the original Rice wheels fitted with 600x16 8 plies. The spare was a swb Land Rover rim. I can also donate one with a scrap tyre if you want to try it on the axles.

I may just take you up on the tyre offer, it all depends on Sunday.

Not at the sale pictured, but I often went in convoy with my mate Dave, who would use his 940 estate and trailer.  We would both park side-on.  Car boot?  We were practically a supermarket!

It's a complete fail.

From the photos, it's a four pint'er. Looked ok until we got her home and saw her in the cold light of day.

Wheel nuts didn't want to budge without heat applied, so before it started to get serious, or bugger it so it couldn't move I started to poke around a bit more.

Chassis rails where the leaf springs are attached, rusty holes aplenty.

Wheels rusty, in the wrong places. No pic to explain this, will take one.

Body not attached to chassis in places. See if you can see where.

If its got Rubery Owen axles I might well be interested in having one or both in exchange for a few coins

So not only is it full of shite, there is shite underneath. Bet it smells like a portacabin toilet as well, poor horses.

Today I waved goodbye to the box. Its gone to a friend of a friend, a farmer who likes to tinker with old stuff and has the time, space and a sparkle stick so he can patch it up.

Jim is under instruction, next time we go and kick the tyres before he purchaes blind.

Farmers and old Horseboxes, They just love 'em! The old chap next door can't bear to let this broken-backed, roofless piece of junk go and has kindly parked it just outside my sitting rooom window where I can watch it appreciate in value. (For the last 3 years)
