Having placed a 99.99 bid on a Megane that I have no doubt will be topped by the seller's mates (it's acheeky bid but I will buy the car if no-one else bids), I came across this piece o'chod -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/volvo-s80-2-4-petrol-/252281834798?hash=item3abd2b4d2e:g:YMsAAOSwDuJWueeJ

I'm thinking it could be worth a punt - but does anyone know the likely cause of the emissions issue (the seller appears to be 100% truthful about it) -

MOT history of this vehicle

  • Test date2 February 2016
  • Test ResultFail
  • Odometer reading117,668 miles
  • MOT test number1046 3488 8244
  • Reason(s) for failure
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.D.3)
Exhaust emissions hydrocarbon content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.D.3)

Lambda sensor?

Lambda, dead cat, injectors leaking/tired, tired coil packs/plugs, valve stems, etc etc etc.

Hard to say without further information.

Try to get a copy of the emissions printout, this can tell you many things....

Hmmmmmm, maybe I should leave it alone - I do seem to be expert at buying working motors then breaking them and not repairing 'em - perhaps starting with a bad 'un isn't the best plan as I know nowt about these (or much else as it goes, except 1966-8 AMC brakes).

We had an S80 about 5 years ago, when the engine management light came on it took many visits to the garage, each costing many, many hundreds of pounds.  I remember replacing the catalytic converter, the throttle body but there must have been at least two other things that were replaced, each one "would definitely fix it this time"

I sold it with the warning light still on.

A nice car to drive (although they can kangaroo a bit with cruise control on when the EML is lit), very quiet and some were available with quite high profile tyres so the ride was lovely.  Seats excellent, roomy inside, big boot too.

Could be burning oil.

My Mazda burns a litre every 500 miles and yet the emissions readings were excellent. Agree with suggestion to ask seller about readings though.

I had an S80 with the VAG 5-pot dizzler, did 24k in it in 6 months and it was gr9.

Lukas had an S80 (can't remember engine, petrol iirc) and it was a nightmare, constantly breaking down.

I had a 2.9 S80. it was one of the comfiest smoothest cars I've had. The interiors are nice too if you get the right spec.

Tricky - I am hoping no-one else bids on the 99.99 Megane -it has panoramic roof and leather seats (and non-working front windaz), otherwise I may have consider the Volvo - not that I need either of course.

If I had one of these it would have to be either the pre-D5 diesel or the daft T6 petrol.  Other models seem to be more trouble than they're worth (I daresay the T6 would be trouble too, but the POWAAAAAR when it was working properly would make it worthwhile).

I'd have a D5 over the VAG dizzle as I thought mine was a tad sluggish.

I was told (pub talk here) that the T6 was de-tuned to stop it lunching the gearbox (/pub talk). They still do break gearboxes, but I still want one.

You can tune  the 2.5 TDI with plug and play bits to 170-180bhp quite easily.

I thought the T6 might be an arse to work on but the engine bay doesn't look too crammed.
