When I ran my MK X as my daily, I would often be on the M5 when the fuel gauge was teetering on the edge of disappearing behind the mask, I delighted (though no idea why - to relieve the boredom of being on a motorway perhaps?) in letting the current tank run dry and then as she spluttered, flipping the switch and counting how long it took and how much speed was lost before the second tank filled the floats again and she roared back into life...

All fine and dandy until inevitably I realised that I had not re-filled the other tank....

My Series 2 XJ had a posh push button that showed which side tank you were on... progress, slow but steady!

I have heard and read of all sorts of ailments that befell the twin tank arrangements on all these cars yet never had any problem with it in about half a dozen XJs of various series (though never an S1). Therefore, I conclude that everyone else is wrong and the system is totally reliable and cannot be beaten! :)

History time!

This car was sold by Charles Follett Limited in Mayfair in May 1973, to a Mr R Woodley who lived in Rutland Gardens, South Kensington. A couple of years later it went to a Mr Powell Smith in Leicester, and from their to a Mrs Kibling in Fife. By the end of the 80s it had done about 39,000 miles. It may then have been in storage for a while, had a partial restoration in the early noughties, and was owned by a Jaguar and Daimler enthusiast in Bristol for a while. He sold the car to me this week, and it's now back in London, stored pending some further work on bodywork and other things. The car has now done about 49,000 miles (mileage backed up by history file).

What a strange thing to say.  Have you ever had a six cylinder SD1?   My Rover 2600 drives as well as if not better than my BMW 525i.

I very nearly bought that myself. Infact, its only due to it being a short wheel base that put me off, as I want a long wheel base for weddings. he said it needed a fuel tank replacing, which was included i guess?

This talk of fuel tank shenanigans reminds me that in a S3 V12 a tank will last anout 3 1/2hours on tick over if you have the air con on full blast whilst parked on the forecourt of New Scotland Yard in 30 degree sunshine.

Can't imagine you'd get away with more than 3 1/2 seconds there now before being shot.

Also for maximum Flash Bastard points , use 2 pumps simultaneously to fill up. The chicks love it( well they did in the 80's)

If your gonna buy a car , buy a jag. There's room in the back for a shag. There's a biscuit tin , to keep your jonnies in. If your gonna buy a car , buy a jag. Sorry mid 70s schoolyard song.

Best song in EVAH,

The spare tank is in the boot, plus about half a car.

There is a J plate on ebay currently at £1800 but obviously it has rot.

A guy near me has a H reg double six - there is an F plate on shitebay with price at £200 up to now due to to rot and other issues.

The Jag is a thing of beauty and after reading this second Jag purchase post and both of them being white I am getting very tempted to go for another myself. I had a white XJ40 as my first Jag and although I don't need another car, well I wouldn't be on here if that stopped me.

You had to get the real posh player to play quad cartridges. Manual picture shows Radiomobile Stereo 8.

When you think about it, the series Jag saloons are seriously cool, with that edgy image. Edwoodwoodwoodwoodwood had one in the Equalizer, no other car would have done the job

I have rented a lock up garage four miles from my place in which to stash this old girl, so at least the rust shouldn't be getting much worse for the time being.  I am going to take the maybe reckless step of fitting a refurbed AED (it's a type of mini carburettor) rather than going for the manual choke mod straight away.

Can't you go 2's with your car nut neighbor and get a fuckoff big shared aircraft hangar built?

Good luck with that...................................That AED is the most complicated of solutions for the simplest of problems yet devised. Even by B.L. standards..............

*Stupid question alert*... is there any difference between the AED on the Jag/Daimler and the one used on the Rover P6?  If they are the same I have an NOS AED (somewhere) that you are welcome to have cos I am binning the original setup when I get mine back on the road in my recurring dream/fantasy that the car is ever finished and running.

My MK10 had one of those awful devices. I used to let it start and warm a bit then pull one of the connections off to shut it off. I still like the old MK2 slifing choke lever to the right of the steering wheel. Did series 2 XJs have them as well? If so, I never had a moments trouble with any of mine.
