Had a fleet reunion today, the poojo has survived doing a 100 mile per day commute in the hands of it's new owner since march.

Remember this?

Well, it's still taking me to work and back. As the MOT is up in the first week of the new year I thought it prudent to book it in.

I phoned my local garage and they said 'can you drop it off at 4.30 today?'..........  "Err...um..yes, I can"  I said nervously.

So. That's just time to top up the washer bottle then.

Wish me luck.

I use these cars day-to-day and love them. If you don't want. To spend much money on mundane transport, they're perfect - tough, simple, reliable and long-lasting. Springing which is intended for the real world rather than the Nürburgring, too. GLWTMOT.

Bad news.      It's a fail.

Good news.   Only on a tail lamp (which was working yesterday), and rear brake imbalance.

Did get an advisory for corrosion and some joint play though.

Sounds like the same failure I got on a numberplate bulb, the bastard worked when I fixed it... my plan is to have the lights on when I take the car back, and pull up around the corner and double check its on, then as I walk past the car to the waiting area double check again and give it a thump if its gone off again...

Rear brake imbalance - quick visit to euro car parts for some cheap pads?

TBH, I'm letting the garage guy do it. He's a one man band and doesn't charge excessively.

'Like' because a fail like that is practically a pass where I'm from.

A womb?

Many memories, my old man had a 1.8S auto in metallic grey that lunched it's gearbox at 42,000 miles and Audi just replied "meh".

New gearbox later and it went on to do 310,000 miles before the mechanical bits began to fail at a rate faster than it was worth fixing. It ran for a year under new ownership then all trace is lost.

Added extra wiring and a spare holder after punching the blank out to give it 2 fog lights at the back. Now I recall the orange triangle on the push button that lit up (and the heated rear screen). Had a very particular smell to the upholstery that persisted from the day we had it, slightly plasticky chemical smell.

That and switch on the Blaupunkt to hear whirrrrrrrrrrrrCLUNKCLUNK as the aerial went up. Oh, and the little plastic insert with P on in the top of the door lock stalks.

Many memories.

Woohoo!

Audi now has an MOT into 2018!

All that was required was adjustment of the rear brakes(and the bulb), so it's all good.

Advisory for corrosion, I thought Aldi 80's were galvanised? Well apart from front wings.

AIUI it's surface corrosion of the front subframe. I'll have to have a proper look.

I've had this for a year and I'm choosing to celebrate by getting it washed.

Oh, and by putting a tyre on it.

Bugger. After my boring German cars don't go wrong post above, the fekker has shat it's brake master cylinder.

Found out when swapping the tyres over, the o/s/f is awash in brake fluid that has wept down from above.

Just pricing up parts now.

But if anyone wants to make me a derisory offer  - feel free.

A bag of Haribo Starmix. If you want to play the haggling game, I'll bump it up to Tangfastics.

(I wish I had a use for it, it's a nice car!)

the engine is sat longitudinal in these so doing the brake master cylinder isn't taxing :)

You're right of course. I was just having a 'fuck that shit'  sort of moment!

The problem actually seems to be the reservoir seals on top of the master cylinder.

Anyone know a brake specialist that might be able to supply Girling seals?

Id say it's a generic Vag late 80s early nineties part. Just seen this on eBay says it suits all Audi and Vws from the that era.post-20412-0-26837700-1488389360_thumb.jpg

Works out at around 13 quid including postage.

Got a link for that? I've been struggling.

I can't do links on my phone but search 'Mk3 Golf brake master cylinder reservoir seal' and it should appear as a selection.

A little update.

Sadly the seals that braddon81 found are for an ATE master cylinder. Bugger.

Brakes International cant supply the seal, but were very helpful.

Thanks for that, much good info there.

I've come to the conclusion that the only way forward is a new master cylinder.
