2001 Astra 1,7 sizzler.......won't start. Is it dead?

Well.....the other day I was driving along and the bastard just cut out....no warning nothing. I tried to start it and nothing at all. You turn the key and all the warning lights come on but turn the key to start it and nothing......no clicking or anything. The warning lights don't go dim either. I've changed the ignition barrel and the starter motor to no avail. Any ideas anyone? Thanks loads. Charlie.

The cambelt is the one this I've not checked for some reason.lol. Mind you there is no noise at all when you try to start it though. I'm do know the belt was LONG overdue like.lol.

I know that there have issues with dry solder joints in the EDU behind the fuel pump. Can't see why it would stop it turning over though.

Fuel pump solenoid? I had a breakdown last month, car just died on me trying to start it. The fuse for the fuel pump had blown, swapped with the one from the fag lighter and away we went. I felt like a fucking God having fixed a modern car at the roadside.

Possibly the cam belt, but I'd have thought it would spin over with no effort to catch if it was. Obvs. if the belt when you were driving it may have just locked the engine up, but I'm not convinced as I reckon you'd have had some lights coming on.

Turning it over by hand or having a peek inside the cover should give that away.

Check the maxi fuses.  As above, the EDC is main suspect for running problems, easily replaced from an ebay recon unit nowadays, however it won't stop the starter motor.  Do you have any power going to it?

I am diesel is right about the edu on the pump but that won't cause non crank . If it turns out to be the edu then there is a chap trading as the edu doctor who repairs them properly for 50 quid

I had an 02 plate dizler Van with the y17dt Isuzu lump. Chucked a conrod doing 70 on m1. Blew a hole thru the block you could fit your hand thru.

I had an astra come in like that - it turned out to be a dead EDU as usual but the non cranking was odd. Turned out that the two yellow 70a engine control fuses had popped, and when I took the back off the EDU there was a huge blob of solder loose inside it which had shorted the thing out. I guess someone reworked it in the past.

I need to check the maxi fuses.....I had the edu soldered by the AA a few years ago. My pal who has looked at it saves that the small power wire to the starter has power but he's not sure if its getting to the starter. He tried to tow start it but it tried to run but wouldn't stay running.

 

Would a fuse or earth fault make it cut out while it was driving though?

Is there a relay that makes the starter motor kick in - could be stuck/faulty? I suppose that wouldn't explain the cutting out.

 

IIRC these are common for losing the earth strap - might be worth a look.

As in the battery earth strap bud?

Yep, I'm sure I've read they end up earthing through the pedals if the strap is damaged and it causes issues. I could be wrong though.
