'93 Mondy thread - MOT pass

Jude Currie has spotted K535 HHK. A Ghia Estate that was last on the road in 2010.

The plate seemed familiar to me and sure enough, I went through my 90's magazines and found that it was used in the August 1993 issue of What Car?

As Stephen Fry once said 'Judas Priest on a 2 stroke moped' - what a find!! Mythical creature a K reg estate.

Wonder if it's owned by a giffer who gave up driving or 'I know what it's wurf' type?

Thank you!

I know! Any K Plate is a brilliant spot, but then I saw the roof rails....

I suspect it may be the former. It's last keeper change was in March 1996!

OK, I'm sure you've let him know it might be the only one, did find two others when going through the data, but think their MOT's might be expired even longer. Needs saving doesn't it? MOT history clean as a whistle until it stopped being used.

Yep, I  told him the plate looked familiar and sent the pictures of the What Car? article to him. It does! I'm amazed that is still exists, I had always wondered if it was listed on SORN but actually gone around the oval many moons ago... It really does! and yes! Just 68k at its last one and only doing a few hundred miles a year

if we are talking about K reg estates existing in the first place, I came across a fair few when I bashed a bunch of K Reg Mondeo chassis number ranges for you, there was also that K reg Mondeo estate that someone had sadly turned into a pickup, that was on the eBay tat thread a few years back so they certainly did exist in period, but this is is the first survivor I know of :)

There's another on Flickr that hasn't seen the road since 2009. This was taken in 2020

Thanks, yes one of the potential survivors up thread, but if I've seen that photo before, I've not had a copy of it downloaded. Cheers for that.

The added provenance of the green one with the top spec Ghia'ness is what's really done me in...(appreciate SJE is a ghia, but it won't be pumice inside)

Ah, I couldn't remember if I'd posted it before and I know! In the words of Smith And Sniff 'FIND ANOTHER!'

Goes without saying, if it did become available, even though I don't have the skills, space or resources, I'd have to save this one.

at least I could justify by the fact you could probably get quite a few 8ft fluorescent tubes inside! I like that about its reg, 535, is fluorescent colour code talk for "White" as in 3500K white, CRI range of 50, aka your typical white halophosphate fluorescent tube, the most common colour in the UK for a long time by far

Q4 numbers from 2023 have gone up on How Many Left - so Paul Harbord on Facebook has run the numbers on MK1s...

these are the highlights:

  • Only 430 cars on the road compared to 526 the previous year.
  • 146 cars have been scrapped from the DVLA register in 2023.
  • There are clearly some cars being SORN'd for the winter or as part of collections which is good to see.
  • There have been quite a few Ghia models disappear, although the Ghia X numbers remain about the same.
  • The poverty spec models had almost no losses.

MK2 info

  • 2647 less cars on DVLA from last year with 1901 less SORN'd cars, these numbers mirror what happened to the Mk1 through 2015-19, so save the ones you want to keep now!
  • 1398 cars on the road, 34.8% less than 2022
  • LX is still the most common on the road but only 230 cars this year and only 36 Diesel engined cars taxed.

Jeeez mk2's are dropping fast 😢

Not many nice ones left, many you see are absolutely gopping on the ends of the sills, boot floor etc.

Interesting stats! I compared it to Sweden, we’ve still got almost 2,000 mk1:s left. Can’t see how many are actually taxed though.

wow, people must look after their Mondeos up there, as we have only 0.01% of total production left.

I don’t how many mk1:s were sold, but Mondeo was the 11th most sold car in 1997 with 7,645 units.

Most of them are probably rotting behind a barn somewhere, you almost never see them on the streets. I saw a mk1 today though, couldn’t take a picture as I was driving.

I was confident my last mk1 was still around mainly because it was in such a solid state and I had the cam belt changed to give it the best possible chance. I sold it in 2018, looks like the MOT expired the following year and no info on tax so looks like it's gone 😢

@Marshall2810.. sad.

How come the record has gone ?

I had two IMPs, both razorblades by now... Both on the DVLA 'is it taxed'...

533KNX     &     884KOE

How come 🤔

Because these days when a cert of destruction is issued car gets removed from DVLA, whereas in old days it didn't always happen. My parents MK2 escort is on there scrapped in about 1997ish.

That's even more depressing.

Sometimes better to travel with hope than arrive. Oh well

vehicles with just a scrapped marker will still show up on the DVLA with whatever their last tax due date is, its only vehicles that have explicitly been issued a CoD that will vanish off the public facing checker (and those who have been voided ie if it is found you have a ringer etc)
