K Seal.

Baws to that, If it's worth fixing, it's worth fixing properly (within your notional budget of course).  That's Numberwang!

SteelSeal is reckoned to be even better.

I can picture it now. After the fourth rusty exhaust manifold stud has snapped off, after finally wrestling the second head free (TIME ELAPSED: 16 HOURS 4 MIUTES 45 SECONDS) and on reassembly the second to last head stud won't torque down because the thread in the block has stripped and you have to take it all apart again.........

"What the fuck am I doing? Why did I not just K seal this fucking thing?"

OMFG BLOCKED WATERWAYS

I had a Yaris d4d with a very slight HG blow. The previous owner Steel Sealed it (I worked out later). I then steel sealed it. It didn't do any good at all, other than fucking the thermostat and causing it to overheat where it didn't before.

WBAC got it after that.

Do these coolant leak fixers work if the water is pishing out of the gasket?

Chop the bad head off the engine and run it as a three cylinder.

How can a thin liquid with fine kopper particles block a waterway? Or ruin a thermostat? Mind you I've not used SteelSeal.

Unless of course you crumbled QuikSteel in, as some have done. That's what you use to repair damaged housings etc. That would block a drain given half a chance.

Aren't these nearly engine out jobs to do the cambelts, due to restricted access?

I think it would be totally awesome if this is saved. However given the ballache of doing so, I could see why if it wasn't.

At least that its a v6, you probably only need to replace one bank of gaskets.

Captain Slow and I need to investigate this when both of us are awake and there's daylight.

It may not have been the headgasket; we were both so knackered that the second it shat itself we just wanted it on a low loader.

Been doing a bit of light reading on the Carminat navigation system - turns out it's got a colour screen (along with leather seats and a CD player player player).

It'll be be knackered. Everything on it will be knackered.

Then I'll have to work out why it wanted to switch lanes whenever I put my foot down. My money's on bushes.

Well according to R9UKE and the interwebs, HGF on the L7X (Renault designation)/ES9(PSA) is exceedingly rare - so you may be lucky and its just a split pipe somewhere spraying everywhere.

No idea. I can't explain the science, but I remember the results vividly.

It wrecked the waterways on my Rover 827.

Didn't read the small print at the bottom

'Not to be used on Rover 827s'

This is what I'm thinking. I said to Dugong earlier that I didn't think it was HGF because on reflection the pool of water was on top of the exhaust manifold - logically, above the head gasket mating faces. How can it piss water upwards? Therefore it's either a hose, or steam which has condensed and dropped and thus its location can't be relied on.

We'll have a look at some point.

I’m with R9UKE on this. As my chariot has the ES9 V6 I’ve read around all over the net about this engine and the cars it fits in and can’t recall reading about any OMGHGF. After coil packs the weak point on the 406 is radiator corrosion. Mine had a leak somewhere near the top 5+ years ago (it was only 10 years old at this point) so I had it replaced. Of concern is that this radiator also cools the Badermatic and any problems with that are very expensive to fix. If the Renault has a similar radiator it might have given out with an escape of steam.

Having said all of that it’s a Renault and a Laguna (though admittedly not a Laguna II) so all the usual rules don’t apply.

Good luck keeping this unloved car on the road

This is what Dugong and I are now thinking - some of the fins are a bit iffy so we're going to experiment.

It's a manual, boss.

Kind of along the same lines as406 v6 said but it worth making sure the rad going wasn't the cause of the hgf cos I bet it's unique to that car and made from unobtainium.

Would be a real shame to spend the money and time doing the hg and then find it needs a 400 quid radiator or dash out to do a heater matrix etc.

A mk1 lag v6 should be a lovely drive ( like a safrane ?) well worth saving .

This advert reckons they all share the same rad. £110 is a bit rich for it though.

But if it is the same, then this sort of thing is much more reasonable: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RENAULT-LAGUNA-1-6-1-8-2-0-1994-2001-ESPACE-2-0-1996-2001-NEW-RADIATOR-/190625967304

EDIT: That last one is without aircon.

A colour screen which changes to night mode when you turn the headlights on, IIRC.

The input is slow and awkward, since it can't use postcodes you have to set aside an afternoon to type something like "Broad Street Ashton Under Lyne" using the twirly wheel, and if you want to go somewhere like Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant it's probably quicker just to cycle there.

Being CD based it's a little slow to calculate routes, although it theoretically makes for easier updates. We were promised an annual update CD, but they never materialised. Last time I looked into it (well over a decade ago) other owners had discovered that you could buy another manufacturer's discs, edit a few text files and re-burn them so they work in the Renault.

Posted

That sounds exactly the same system that's in my hippo, its bloody annoying and I've had the thing for three years and never used it after it failing to find an address. It would be fine if I wanted to go to Spain or France as some of the routes are still programmes into the memory.

Any built in Satnav is the spawn of the devil. SD cards aren't bad because most manufacturers don't seem able to get their head around the Secure bit of Secure Digital - older Ford stuff you can just copy the card contents. They got their head around DVD copy protection more though, I failed to get a copy of my Travelpilot discs because it uses some elaborate PlayStation style copy protection.

And they were £300 from the dealer.

My Astra uses USB so I reckon if someone bought the update and immediately duplicated the device they could sell them on, I dare say the sat nav marks it as used once you update. Still £95 though.

French, free, broken, plush.

Sounds perfect. Seeing as it isn't your only car and if you have space for it I can't see a down side to having a go at fixing it, sadly I'm guessing a replacement Laguna 1 engine costs more than 99p. Good luck.

I feel I should clarify my earlier comment, that I too fully support all attempts to revive this car, HGF or not :D

I think it might be a not, though :D
