Lots of welding will this low mileage Corsa end up bridged

Cheers Guys for the good advice..

I feel a bit guilty really as I found the car on eBay for her about 9 months ago as she wanted a small car so she could learn to build her confidence after a 10 year break in driving and its been completely trouble free and it did the job so I guess that alone is worth the money..

It did only cost £225 though so at the end of the day that's a lot cheaper than getting cabs, if Billy's motor was a bit nearer I would jump at it..

I will have a word with her weekend and suggest she weighs it in.. I think she would prefer an auto so if an Cheap 5 door Auto Corsa came up locally then we could use the interior out of her old one..

It's a shame really as the engine is a real peach and I only changed the plugs oil filters and Coolant etc only a couple of months back.

Do you think I could swap it for an Amiga as I really wouldn't mind playing Lotus challenge again after all these years lol..

That, to coin a phrase, is fucked IMHO.

It's scrap.

It's had 22 years on our septic isle, and it's day is done.

So..............

A cost of 225 fully working and MOTed, says it ain't worth a wank as it is.

Is it a 5 door? Something in my hazy memory tells me they didn't do a 3 door GLS.

Yes it's a five door.. I think the doors and roof are the only rust free items on the motor going by the mot failure..

225 for nine months motoring, can't be all bad. Frag it buy Billy's live happily. For three months then start again!

I had a hateful L reg corsa, A 1.5 TD gls. The bastard thing only still exists after I flogged it. Prolly not for much longer though:

Fail in 2012 for Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.B.2)

Advisory this year for corrosion on underneath, so guess the undersealed patch is getting close to life expired.

Tell you what, you weigh it in and send me the proceeds, and I'll post you an amiga 500+. It might have to go by myhermes because royal mail will want more money than you are going to get for the car.

Reason(s) for failure

offside rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded outer sills (2.4.A.3)
nearside rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded outer sill (2.4.A.3)
offside rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded inner /outer wheel arch (2.4.A.3)
nearside rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded inner /outer wheel arch (2.4.A.3)
nearside front Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded outer sill (5.2.6)
nearside Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded centre outer sill (5.2.6)
offside Seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded centre floor (5.2.6)

In other words, that's a new sill needed on the passenger side, the back of the sill in the inner wheelarch both sides, the back of the drivers side sill and a patch on the floor by the jacking point at a guess. Not too strenuous if you can weld and have the time, but the advisories suggest more corrosion. I suggest, if she is determined to keep it on the road that she finds a reputable welder and would look at about £500 to have everything sorted out properly and rustproofed, not just patches slapped over the top and undersealed. It's not worth it in terms of the value of the car, but if she is that attached to it and is prepared to put the money into having it fixed properly, then why not? Compared to the depreciation of a new or nearly new car, it would cost peanuts to sort that out.

Wow! The only body on chassis corsa ever produced.

Thats gone in all the classic Corsa places. Even an early GSi would need a reshell with that level of corrosion.

When you are getting to the point of needing multiple patches to make up rotten box sections and complete sills getting welded on, it's time to fuck it off. When I had the old Fiesta, it had approx 4 or so holes in the floor going up the bulkhead. It wasn't so much the welding that was the problem it was stripping out all the soundproofing and the other stuff that would have added to the cost of welding it up. I realise that sounds negative but I can foresee her wasting £500 on welding the old shed up then a clutch going and then it's another couple of hundred gone. I'd suggest buying something else that's got some life in it.

And don't forget £££ for the next shitload of welding, when lots of new holes appear in time for its next MOT.

She's only had it nine months, surely she can't be that attached to the heap??

I'm happy to report that the Corsa is no longer mine.

It sounds like an MOT tester who received a certificate in 'ultra bitterness and hate all people' Level GR9. If you can be assed, take it somewhere else less full of hatred for everything.

Good idea, waste another test fee on the shed. Full marks for optimism though!

Was at a scrapyard recently and got some bits off a Corsa B that was in really nice condition, X reg, glance underneath and clearly no rust, lowish miles and generally clean.  They're worthless sadly so it should be easy to find another clean one.  Generally good simple cars which on the whole don't rust too much - there are always exceptions..........

The car is off to the scrap man now all I did was stick the registration in the computer and it's being picked up next week and was a very painless experience and not like the good old days where you would have to dump the car outside the yard and quickly rip the number plates off before being seen or the scrapyard guard dog got through the fence and took a chunk out of you lol..

We got £27 for the old girl but could of got another £28 if we wanted to do the 60 mile trip round to the scrapyard..

I do feel quite bad scrapping it as the interior and engine are still as good as new and it really does drive spot on as you would expect for a 50 odd thousand mile motor..

Ive scrapped a far better car myself which only had a burst seal on the steering rack and was otherwise mint. Cost of dropping the subframe for replacement was too much. Can't save them all.
