Cheap cars but why not bikes?

Honda CB250RS classified for 495. Better than a lardy wet-dream, but can be a bit sprocket hungry.

...or how about a Honda Bros 650 project chod 150. Lighter than a NTV as it has an ally frame instead of steel.

Maybe people don't flog bikes on Ebay anymore? :?  I think Bren is right, Kawahondamauki parts prices seem to be a good chunk of it.

The last bike I purchased (Oct 2006) was a 1990 Honda CD250U on Ebay, for the princely sum of £266.05.

You want an unmolested MZ ES250 Trophy? That'll be three large, please... http://www.classicsuperbikes.co.uk/catalogue/Bikes-for-sale/MZ-ES250-Trophy.html

Ooooh, that MZ looks nice - I wonder if it will be a ball ache to register? Possibly not if its been MOT'd in the past - that said, it wont be on the database, so it probably wont be MOTable now, and possibly it wont be registerable without an MOT - aaaaargh.

I've had more luck with for sale ads on forums in the last couple of years than eBay or Scumtree. The last one I bought was an MOTd 2008 Piaggio 400 for £300. It was a bit cheese-gratered up one side after a drop on the ice, but Isopon and half a dozen cans of satin black fixed that. I toured Spain and the Pyrenees on it earlier this year, it's a good 'un!

CZ, not MZ... I doubt it would be a problem to MOT it, you could do it on the chassis number just like an import.

Gumtree seems to be better than ebay, here's a few possibles.

Gilera Runner 200, WOOD written all over it.

$_86.JPG

GS500 been stood for a year, £375

$_86.JPG

RF600, these are proper VALUE.

$_86.JPG

I know only 1 of these fits your sub 350cc criteria, but there isn't really much between wanked out chinese 125s and 500+cc bikes in your price range.

The Gilera Runner is my scoot of choice, either the 180 or the 200 as here. Have ridden the 180 and was amazed how good it was (had a 600 Bandit at the time), but they seem to be very infrequently for sale - certainly down here.

The GS500 seems to surface quite often, nearly bought one earlier this year but the sums didn't add up after calc'ing the cost of all the parts and consumables that it needed to make a half decent hack

The RF is a massively underrated bike, like the 'Teapot' GSX's mentioned earlier. The RF900 is even better, a now sadly deceased friend of mine had one, rode it a number of times. Either 6 or 9, not the fastest, best handling yadda, yadda, yadda, but cheap, tough and reliable.

I didn't know about the CCM's being cheapo chinese  stuff either, I thought they were made in UK!!! You live and learn.

Not necessarily... there are still options:

Forget the Seize-ups. They don't do it for me.

I'm flabbergasted they got dear...around 2004/5 I had a ETZ250 which I bagged for about 310 quid. Got a extra one for spares too thrown in!

Now. I'd quite fancy a big single.

Mzs went up in price when bemsee made a "cheap" championship class, It started in about 96ish and it was meant to be cheap, you buy an Mz, fit a Suzuki rm250 piston, aftermarket shocks, cartridges in the forks, marchesini mag wheels,Brembo brakes and..... Now not as cheap but cheapish, they used to run slicks, not sure if they still do.

A good Mz will lap brands Indy in 56/57 seconds which isn't too shabby

MZ was a pukka racing brand in the 1950s, especially with Ernst Degner as their works rider.

I know it's a huge departure from their ring-a ding days, but I'd love a go on one of these:

I've seen/been offered stacks of cheap bikes and peds thie last 18 months or so.

I think with all the imports, plus the cheap nasty Chinese stuff, it's knocked the prices down a bit.

Have you seen the new / unregistered CZ125 earlier in this thread, Billy? It's even in Chester. Got your name written all over it, that has.

Is it just me that finds Gumtree's search function nosebleed-inducing?

I'll give that Hong Leong a miss ta.

As alluded to previously, I wouldn't mind a Seymour Powell MuZ Skorpion. I always fancied the two-grand extra race replica they did with the WP suspension, but it was a bit outside my budget. :(

The MZ1000S was an in-house design, had nothing to do with China (I assume, from your comment)

but that was 60 years ago, a lot has changed since then. The MZs on this thread are OK as a commuter hack but will kill any spirit you have, whereas the various cheap jap stuff may not be cutting edge but will still be fun at the weekends.

^ Yep, they're quick... I had a GSX-F Teapot in 600cc flavour and that would easily put 130+ mph on the clock on my private replica of the M26.

I had one, really good bikes. Sold mine for 300 quid in July as the MOT ran out and within five weeks of covered storage, both fork seals had lifted, back brake had seized, it was on 3, maybe two cylinders (carb issue) and the exhaust was like a colander. Sadly didn't have the time to square it away. :(

I always had a hankering for a Skorpion, but got a Yamaha SZR660 to fix up, and one ride on that put me off forever. I've never ridden a more horrible bike in my life. Singles are for trials bikes and cement mixers IMO.

Singles and twins are good at up to 60mph but feel strained at anything over that

I blew my Pegaso up on the Autobahn after a few hours at 95. Took the whole holiday to fix it...

Posted

Horses for courses though surely . A pegaso was never designed to that sort of continuous speed .

"My gsxr1000 makes my wrists hurt at less than 30mph "

"My Tdm850 is too tall for me "

"My Rd500 costs too much to run "

Etc etc

vtr1000 ain't strained, the sp1 is OK at 160mph let alone 60mph. But you wont find one for £500 sadly.

"My zx10r eats generators for fun"

I had a CB250 years ago that used to do that, never did discover why it used to fry them - used o go through headlight bulbs like they were going out of fashion too.

Yeh I can't say my sv650 or my Ducati felt strained at any speeds to be honest

I meant this superbike came after they were taken over by the Malaysians and therefore they had the money to spunk away on such a bizarre (for the company) project.
