Got the chance to obtain one for fuck all coin. All I know is that it is green, diesel and has around the hundred and something miles on the clock.

I know doors can rust but what else goes tits up?

Everything else?

Even if you scrap it, you'll be a few quids up.

I know, no help at all.

Lots of niggles but they are pretty well made and reliable, parts are dirt cheap and they are very easy to work on, suspension wishbones are made of cheese, dash clusters can fail and electrical issues can arise, they are a good car, a bit nose heavy compared to the petrol models but they still ride and handle extremely well

I like cheese, especially Stilton.

So, I guess almost the same as a similarly aged French car then.

TDCi's can eat injectors for fun or forget that they have them and need them recoding. DMF/EGR headaches if fitted.

TDDi is the old school ford diesel from the escort, noisy but bombproof really.

I saw your thread about focus fixing, so it all seems pretty do'able.

Hmm, I shall look further in to this I think.

They are simple to work on, most of the dash can be removed with one screwdriver, scrapyards yield a plentiful supply of cheap parts and they don't rust *that* badly, I like them, have had several Mk1's , I currently have a Mk2 1.6 petrol as my daily and I can't fault it really, its very pleasant to drive, the seats are crap and the spec is low (LX but you still get the heated front windscreen which is brilliant in winter) but it does exactly what it says on the tin, I would have bought another MK1 but they are getting on now, for a cheap runaround they are ace.

I really like mine, had it just over 3 years and 25k miles.

It broke down once in a big way when a valve went in the engine (petrol) which was bad luck. Apart from that its been very good. Parts cost pennies and are usually a piece of cake to fit. Dealers in most towns, ebay/scrappies full of them if you need bits. Seems like a winner to me.

My mum has a 1.6 petrol, 02 reg. had it from new and now done 130K.

Issues it's had:

As mentioned, the instrument cluster can go tits up, apparently this is down to bad solder and joints which break down with age and cause random gauge and warning light issues. It is fixable though.

The VS sensor can screw up too causing the speedo to stop working and it can be a right bitch to change.

The original Ford 6000cd radios fail, no idea why but the CD player keeps working but you just can't pick up any radio. My mums car has had 3 Ford radios so far, each one died the same way so I put a non genuine one in with a dash facia adaptor plate.

It's just started to rust on the rear sill ends, near the wheel arch. It's had a plate for it's last MOT but easy to fix if you can weld.

It's been a very good and reliable car so far though and doesn't look like it's on it's way out yet either. It just keeps going!

I'd have one if I needed a reliable run around.

Mrs_P had a TDDI when I met her, absolutely bombproof engine wise but just starting to go a bit frilly on doors and bootlid. Put up with a lot, that did.

I'd take a Tddi over a Tdci any day due to DMF issues on the Tdci.

Had a Ghia saloon and it was excellent, good to drive, pokey enough with the turbo. The only issue was the door bottoms and bootlid going crusty. Bought cheap, ran for over a year and sold for a profit

We have TDCi. Good all round car but starting to get a bit bubbly. One sill will need work in future.

You cannot go wrong if it is cheap enough.

Bodywork

Fuel pumps

Clocks

Wheel bearings

Free is too expensive, do the honourable thing and weigh it in straight from the off.

1.8TDCi cam sensor can cause stuttering and cutting out, (£20 OEM from memory) sensor 1 bolt and about 1 min to replace.

Honest transport.

Ignore what the odometer says, chances are it's had a haircut. So long as it starts good from cold and runs smoothly should be ok. As people have said the TDDI is very simple but most are old sheds now so either could be a decent bet now. Just be prepared - as with any diesel to throw it away as soon as it starts playing up.

Good mate of mine had a tdci mk1, kept it going for a few years and put thousands into engine repairs. Quite a pleasant car but I personally don't think they handle as well as 306s.

Aye, I remember the motoring comics raving about the Focus's handling when they came out because they were good to drive around a track or something. 306 is nicer to drive for everyone but Tiffany Dell.

I'm with Cavcraft here, I'd rather have a Laguna II 1.9 dCi that has suffered an electrical fire, has a dicky turbo and retrofitted cheese era autobox. Not that I've had a bad experience of one, they're just as miserable as sin.

I can rely on AS to give a valued, non-judgemental and refreshingly honest opinion. Hahahahaha.

It's landing this evening (possibly) so I'll have a peek at the weekend. It may be very shit. It may not. Who knows.

It beats the Honest John forum, where you get a load of helmets who read a lot of car magazines but have never owned the car they are criticising.
